Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 231: A Twist Of Fate
The sun rose over the horizon, basking the scenes with its haze of l as Kazuichi and his group exited Kazuichi Stronghold. Tris stood by the entrance, her younger sister, Amaya, clutching tightly to her side, waving and beaming brightly at them. "Stay safe!" Tris called out, her voice echoing through the open air.
Amaya darted forward before they could leave, throwing her arms around each of them. "Come back soon!" she insisted, her big eyes full of concern. First, she hugged Ayaka, then Arisu, Jurou, and Lea, all with the same enthusiasm. When she reached Kazuichi, her tiny arms barely wrapped around his waist, but the sincerity in her hug made him smile despite the weight of the journey ahead.
"We’ll be back before you know it," Kazuichi assured her, ruffling her hair gently. "Just keep looking after Tris."
Amaya smiled, nodding eagerly before releasing her hold on him. With one final wave, the group turned toward the path leading out of the stronghold, the vast wilderness stretching before them, every step taking them closer to Sendai.
As they trekked forward, the mood shifted. Silence settled in as the air grew heavier. They all knew what was waiting for them beyond the safety of Kazuichi Stronghold. It wasn’t long before the first signs of danger appeared.
A low growl reverberated from the trees lining the road, and everyone immediately tensed. Arisu’s hand shot up, signaling for the group to stop. They drew their weapons, eyes scanning the dense foliage. The sound of rustling leaves reached their ears, then the unmistakable stench of rotting flesh hit their noses. Zombies.
Kazuichi locked eyes with Arisu, giving her a slight nod. Without a word, they moved into position, the battle instincts they had honed over countless fights kicking in. A dozen zombies lumbered out from the woods, grotesque and reeking of decay.
"Here they come," Jurou muttered, tightening his grip on his sword. His muscles coiled like a spring, ready to unleash the fury he’d kept in check.
"Let’s make this quick," Ayaka added, her eyes sharp and focused, daggers glinting in her hands.
The moment the first zombie lunged forward, Kazuichi darted in, fists clenched. "Haaah!" he grunted, driving his fist into the undead creature’s chest. The impact was solid, and the zombie crumpled with a sickening crunch. "Let’s keep moving!"
Another zombie was on him before he could blink, arms outstretched and jaws snapping. Kazuichi ducked low, sweeping its legs out from under it with a swift kick, then followed with an elbow strike to its skull.
CRACK!
Its head split open on the ground, black blood splattering across the dirt.
Jurou, with his blade flashing, cut through two zombies at once, his strikes fluid and precise. "Tch, too easy," he scoffed, wiping sweat from his brow before turning toward more approaching figures.
Ayaka spun into action beside him, her daggers slicing through undead flesh like butter. Her movements were a dance of death, graceful yet lethal. "There’s more coming from the west!" she called out, eyes scanning the area for the next wave.
Lea covered their flank, her bowstring taut as she loosed arrow after arrow, each one finding its mark in the rotting skulls of the advancing zombies.
Thwip! Thwip!
Every shot she made landed with a sickening thunk, reducing their numbers with deadly efficiency.
Despite the chaos, Kazuichi’s mind wandered back to the powers he hadn’t yet revealed. His fingers tingled with the urge to summon the electricity he could feel coursing through his veins. But no. Not now. He had to keep it hidden—at least for a while longer. He gritted his teeth, fighting back the temptation as another zombie lunged at him.
With a quick spin, he brought his knee into its abdomen, sending the creature flying backward. It slammed into a tree, bones snapping audibly before it crumpled in a heap. Thud!
"You alright, Kazuichi?" Arisu called out from across the battlefield. Her sword swung in a deadly arc, severing a zombie’s head clean off its shoulders.
"Yeah, I’m fine!" he shouted back, dodging a swipe from yet another undead monstrosity. His breath came in heavy pants, but the adrenaline kept him sharp. They needed to move fast if they were going to reach Sendai by nightfall.
As the last of the immediate threat fell, Jurou stood tall, his sword dripping with dark blood. "If this is what we’re dealing with on the outskirts, Sendai’s going to be crawling with these things," he said, spitting on the ground.
Arisu nodded grimly. "No doubt about it. We’re going to have to stay sharp."
Lea slung her bow across her back and wiped the sweat from her forehead. "Let’s hope we don’t run into anything worse on the way."
They pressed on, moving at a brisk pace, the tension mounting with every mile. The occasional zombie still crossed their path, but nothing they couldn’t handle. Yet, the further north they traveled, the more frequent the attacks became. It was as if the undead could sense their destination. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Ayaka, scouting ahead, suddenly stopped short. "There’s something bigger coming. I can feel it," she warned, her voice barely above a whisper. Her eyes darted toward the treeline, where shadows moved unnaturally fast.
Before anyone could respond, an ear-splitting roar shattered the silence. From the forest emerged an Aberrant, its grotesque form towering over the smaller zombies they had encountered earlier. Its muscles bulged under decaying skin, eyes glowing with a malevolent hunger.
"Shit!" Jurou cursed, readying his weapon. "That thing’s not going down easy!"
Kazuichi planted his feet, steadying himself. He couldn’t use his powers—not yet—but his strength would have to be enough. "Stay sharp!" he called out as the Aberrant charged, its heavy footfalls shaking the ground beneath them.
With a swift motion, Arisu darted forward, slashing at the creature’s legs. Her blade connected, but the Aberrant barely flinched. Instead, it swung its massive arm, nearly catching her off-guard.
Ayaka was quick to act, leaping onto the Aberrant’s back, her daggers plunging into its flesh. "Come on!" she yelled, trying to steer the behemoth away from the others.
The Aberrant roared in fury, bucking and thrashing in an attempt to throw her off. Kazuichi seized the opportunity, rushing in with a powerful uppercut aimed at its jaw.
WHAM! The Aberrant reeled back, giving Jurou and Lea a chance to strike from the sides.
Arrows flew, and steel flashed in the dim light as they hacked and slashed at the Aberrant’s massive frame. Still, the creature fought back with relentless aggression, its claws raking the ground, missing Lea by inches.
"We’ve got to finish this now!" Jurou growled, driving his sword deep into its side. "It’s too dangerous to drag this out!"
Arisu slashed at the Aberrant’s leg again, aiming to cripple it. "Ayaka, get clear!" she shouted, preparing for a finishing blow.
With a final, defiant scream, the Aberrant staggered and collapsed to the ground, its body twitching as life left it.
THUD. The earth seemed to groan under its massive weight.
The group stood, panting and bloodied, as silence descended once more.
Kazuichi wiped the sweat from his brow, glancing at the corpse. "This was just the beginning. Sendai’s going to be a nightmare," he muttered.
Arisu sheathed her sword and nodded grimly. "We’ll be ready."
They regrouped, pushing forward once more, knowing that their greatest challenges lay ahead. Sendai awaited—teeming with danger, but also with the promise of victory.
