Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 242: Breakthrough
The rumbling grew louder as the earth trembled beneath their feet. Kazuichi’s head snapped up, his pulse quickening as he spotted the next wave of Aberrants on the horizon. There was no end to them. Dozens—no, hundreds—of grotesque, misshapen creatures were closing in fast, their forms twisted by the meteorite ores embedded in their flesh.
"We don’t have time to rest," Ayaka muttered, her body still tense from the last battle. "More are coming."
Jurou grimaced, glancing at the distant horde. "We need to fall back. We can’t hold them off forever."
Kazuichi shook his head, determination flashing in his eyes. "No. We end this here. We can’t let them reach the stronghold." He flexed his fingers, the residual charge of lightning still crackling beneath his skin.
"They’re slower this time," Arisu noted, her keen eyes scanning the approaching Aberrants. "But they’re built like tanks."
Lea stepped forward, her body still radiating the strength of a Bulwark. "Then we smash through them." Her fists clenched, the veins in her arms bulging as she prepared for another round.
Kazuichi could see the exhaustion in everyone’s eyes, but they couldn’t afford to falter now. The group formed a defensive line once again, their bodies bracing for the incoming tide of Aberrants. These creatures specialized in defense, their bodies thick with muscle and armor-like skin, making them difficult to penetrate. They lumbered forward, their massive forms looming like a wall of death.
Ayaka moved first, her body blurring as she launched herself toward the nearest Aberrant. Her fists collided with its chest in rapid succession, but the creature barely flinched. Its skin was tough, absorbing the impact with ease.
"Tougher than expected," she growled, stepping back to avoid a swipe from the creature’s claws.
Arisu darted in next, her Project Blood Art extending her limbs with terrifying speed. She lashed out at the Aberrant’s legs, aiming to cripple its movement, but even her attacks seemed to bounce off its hardened exterior.
"These things are like walking fortresses!" Arisu shouted, frustration lacing her voice as she twisted out of the way of a massive fist.
Jurou and Lea moved in, their Bulwark abilities allowing them to engage the Aberrants head-on. Jurou grabbed hold of one of the creatures, locking it in place while Lea delivered a devastating punch to its skull. The force of her strike caused cracks to form along its face, but the creature didn’t go down easily.
Kazuichi watched, analyzing the situation. These Aberrants were slower but much harder to damage than the previous wave. They needed to find a way to break through their defenses, or they’d be overwhelmed.
An idea began to form in his mind.
Kazuichi’s mind raced, dissecting the Aberrants’ movements, the way their hulking forms shrugged off blows that would level a normal enemy. The creatures were slow but built like fortresses—battering them head-on would take too much time, time they didn’t have.
Ayaka ducked under a massive swipe from one of the creatures, her fists glowing with effort as she drove punch after punch into its torso. But the blows didn’t even cause it to stagger. It lumbered forward, swinging at her again. She barely rolled away, frustration tightening her jaw.
"Damn it! These things are impossible to break!" she growled, skidding back into formation. Her eyes locked with Kazuichi’s. "You got any bright ideas, Kazu?"
His gaze flickered with thought, water swirling at his fingertips as an idea clicked into place. "Maybe we’re going about this the wrong way." His voice was measured, eyes narrowing at the approaching horde. "These things are too tough to hit directly. But what if we bypass their defenses?"
Arisu, catching her breath after a near miss with one of the Aberrants’ claws, shot him a glance. "Bypass them? How? Their skin’s like steel."
Kazuichi’s fingers crackled with electricity as he raised his hand, feeling the power surge through him. "Electricity... It could work. They’re slow, which means their reflexes can’t keep up. If I can get inside their defenses, I can shock their system directly. Water will conduct the charge, making it more effective."
Lea nodded, understanding his plan immediately. "You want to use water to get past their armor, then hit them with lightning from within. That could work... But getting close enough won’t be easy."
"That’s why we have to distract them," Kazuichi said, locking eyes with each of them in turn. "Ayaka, you and Arisu keep them occupied. Use your speed to stay out of their reach, make them think they’ve got you on the ropes. Jurou, Lea, you two take the front—draw their attention and keep them from focusing on me. I’ll slip in and hit them with everything I’ve got."
The plan was risky, but they had no other choice. The horde was closing in fast, and if they didn’t take down these Aberrants quickly, the entire stronghold could be overrun.
Ayaka smirked, adrenaline fueling her confidence. "Let’s do it."
Arisu cracked her knuckles, her muscles already shifting with anticipation. "Hope you’re quick with that lightning, Kazu. We won’t be able to dance around these things forever."
Jurou flexed his arms, muscles swelling as his Bulwark abilities took hold. "We’ll hold them off. Just don’t take too long."
Lea’s expression was firm, unshakable. "Let’s give him the opening he needs."
Without another word, the group sprang into action. Ayaka darted forward, her fists flying as she danced around the Aberrants, striking at their legs and joints. Her blows didn’t do much damage, but that wasn’t the point—she was quick, agile, dodging their slow, lumbering strikes with ease. Arisu followed suit, her elongated limbs lashing out with blinding speed, drawing the creatures’ attention.
Jurou and Lea charged forward, placing themselves directly in the path of the approaching Aberrants. Their bodies hardened, muscles swelling with their Bulwark abilities as they braced for impact. The Aberrants’ fists slammed into them with earth-shaking force, but they stood their ground, absorbing the blows and retaliating with crushing punches of their own.
Kazuichi watched from the sidelines, water swirling around his hands as he prepared to move. His teammates were doing their job, creating the distraction he needed. The Aberrants were focused on the front line now, their massive forms swinging wildly at Ayaka and Arisu, who expertly dodged every attack. Jurou and Lea held the line, preventing the creatures from advancing any further.
Now was his chance.
With a surge of energy, Kazuichi shot forward, water spiraling around him like a vortex. His body blurred with speed, slipping between the hulking forms of the Aberrants as he made his way toward the center of the pack. The creatures didn’t notice him at first, too focused on the relentless barrage of attacks from the others.
He reached the nearest Aberrant, his eyes narrowing as he sized up the creature. Its thick, armored skin was nearly impenetrable—but that didn’t matter. He didn’t need to break through its defenses. He just needed to get close enough to touch it.
Water surged up from the ground, wrapping around the Aberrant’s legs like tendrils. The creature growled in confusion, its massive limbs struggling to break free from the watery bindings. Kazuichi moved quickly, his hands crackling with electricity as he placed his palms against the Aberrant’s side.
For a split second, nothing happened. Then, with a sharp crack, electricity shot through the water, surging into the creature’s body. The Aberrant convulsed violently, its muscles locking up as the electricity fried its internal systems. It let out a guttural roar before collapsing to the ground, twitching as the last of the energy coursed through its body.
"One down," Kazuichi muttered, already moving toward the next target.
He repeated the process, using the water to immobilize the Aberrants before delivering a powerful shock to their systems. Each time, the creatures crumpled to the ground, their defenses rendered useless by the electricity coursing through them.
Ayaka and Arisu kept up the pressure, their movements fluid and precise as they darted between the remaining Aberrants. Jurou and Lea held the line, absorbing the brunt of the attacks with their Bulwark abilities, never letting the creatures get close enough to overwhelm them.
Kazuichi moved from one Aberrant to the next, his body a blur of motion as he unleashed wave after wave of electricity. The creatures had no chance to react, their slow reflexes and heavy bodies making them easy targets for his lightning-charged attacks.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the last Aberrant fell, its massive body crashing to the ground with a deafening thud. The battlefield fell silent, the air thick with the scent of burnt flesh and ozone.
Kazuichi stood in the center of the carnage, his chest heaving with exertion. His hands still crackled with residual energy, the last traces of his lightning powers fading away. He glanced around at his teammates, all of them equally exhausted but alive.
"We did it," he said, his voice barely more than a whisper.
Ayaka grinned, wiping sweat from her brow. "Hell yeah, we did."
Arisu stretched, her muscles still tense from the fight. "You really came through, Kazu. That lightning of yours is something else." 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
Jurou let out a deep breath, rolling his shoulders. "Good thing, too. I don’t think we could’ve held them off much longer."
Lea nodded, her expression calm but relieved. "It worked. That’s all that matters."
Kazuichi looked down at his hands, the faintest traces of electricity still sparking between his fingers. The power felt... right. Like it had always been a part of him, just waiting to be awakened.
But there wasn’t time to dwell on that now. They still had to get back to the stronghold—and deal with whatever had caused the emergency Himeno mentioned.
"Let’s get moving," Kazuichi said, turning toward the path ahead. "This fight isn’t over yet."
