Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 277: Test Fight
The wind whistled through the crumbling walls of Yamanashi Stronghold, carrying with it the faint echoes of a world long abandoned. As Kazuichi and Ryoma reached the edge of the stronghold, a sense of calm settled over them, their journey together nearing its end. They had shared stories, exchanged battles, and forged an unspoken bond in the quiet moments between the chaos of their world. But something lingered in the air—a tension that had yet to be resolved.
Ryoma turned to Kazuichi, a gleam of excitement in his eyes. "Before we part ways, how about a little test?" His lips curled into a challenging grin. "I want to see what you’re really made of, Kazuichi. No holding back."
Kazuichi raised an eyebrow, sensing the eagerness in Ryoma’s tone. "A test, huh? You sure you want to do that?"
Ryoma chuckled, cracking his knuckles as he took a step forward. The ground beneath his feet shifted ever so slightly, a ripple in the earth that hinted at something deeper. "I’m a Level IV Merc Hybrid with the Detonate Blood Art and the Ground Element. Trust me, I can handle whatever you throw at me."
Kazuichi’s interest piqued at the mention of Ryoma’s abilities. A Merc Hybrid with the power of Detonate and the Ground Element? This would be an interesting fight. He hadn’t faced anyone with such a unique combination of skills before. "Alright," Kazuichi replied, rolling his shoulders as the familiar surge of energy began to build within him. "Let’s see what you’ve got."
Without warning, Ryoma surged forward, his speed surprising for someone who specialized in raw power and defense. His fist, glowing with the orange hue of Detonate, rocketed toward Kazuichi, leaving a trail of sparks in its wake. Kazuichi barely had time to react, his instincts taking over as he sidestepped the punch. The air exploded where Ryoma’s fist had landed, sending debris flying in every direction.
"Nice move," Ryoma said with a grin, his eyes locked on Kazuichi. "But I’m just getting started."
The ground beneath Kazuichi’s feet rumbled, cracks forming in the earth as Ryoma called upon his Ground Element. Chunks of stone and dirt rose into the air, swirling around Ryoma like a defensive barrier. He stomped his foot, and a massive boulder shot out of the ground, barreling toward Kazuichi with terrifying speed.
Kazuichi’s eyes narrowed. His water element surged to life, a wall of liquid forming in front of him just in time to meet the boulder. The impact sent water splashing in all directions, but the boulder was stopped, crumbling to pieces as it collided with the barrier.
Ryoma wasted no time, following up with a swift combination of punches and kicks, each strike carrying the volatile power of his Detonate Blood Art. Every punch that landed on Kazuichi’s defenses exploded on contact, sending shockwaves through the air. The force of the blasts pushed Kazuichi back, his feet digging into the ground as he struggled to hold his position.
"You’re fast," Kazuichi muttered, blocking a particularly vicious kick with his forearm. The explosion sent a sharp pain through his arm, but he gritted his teeth and pushed forward, retaliating with a swift punch of his own, infused with lightning.
Ryoma’s grin widened as he dodged the attack, the lightning grazing his side. "And you’ve got power to back it up! I can see why you’re so well-known."
Kazuichi smirked but didn’t respond. Instead, he dashed forward, his body a blur as he unleashed a flurry of strikes, each one a mix of lightning and water. His fists crackled with energy, and every hit that connected sent electricity coursing through Ryoma’s body.
But Ryoma was no easy opponent. He rolled with the hits, using the momentum to keep himself from being overwhelmed. As Kazuichi pressed the attack, Ryoma suddenly slammed his palm into the ground, and the earth responded. The ground beneath them split open, jagged rocks erupting from the cracks, forcing Kazuichi to leap back.
"Not bad, but you’ll have to do better than that," Ryoma taunted, his body glowing with the fiery energy of Detonate.
Kazuichi narrowed his eyes. He wasn’t one to be outdone. With a deep breath, he activated his Synthesis Blood Art, a wave of muscle fibers enveloping his body like armor. His strength surged, his speed increasing tenfold as his powers melded into a cohesive force.
In the blink of an eye, Kazuichi was on the offensive again, water swirling around his fists as he launched a barrage of punches. Ryoma met each attack head-on, blocking with his forearms and countering with explosive strikes of his own. The air between them crackled with energy, the ground beneath them trembling with each impact.
For a moment, it seemed as if they were evenly matched, their blows cancelling each other out in a brutal dance of power and precision. But Kazuichi wasn’t finished yet.
With a roar, he unleashed a massive torrent of water, the liquid spiraling into the sky before crashing down toward Ryoma like a tidal wave. Ryoma’s eyes widened, but he didn’t flinch. Instead, he slammed his fists into the ground, and a wall of earth rose to meet the wave, the two elements colliding with a deafening roar.
For a brief moment, they stood locked in a stalemate, water and earth battling for dominance. But Kazuichi wasn’t about to let up. He summoned his lightning, the electricity surging through the water and turning it into a deadly conductor. The moment the lightning hit Ryoma’s wall, the earth exploded, sending chunks of rock flying in every direction.
Ryoma grunted in pain, but he didn’t back down. Instead, he clenched his fists, and the ground beneath Kazuichi’s feet suddenly gave way. The earth opened up beneath him, and before Kazuichi could react, he was swallowed by the ground, buried in a pit of jagged rocks.
"Gotcha!" Ryoma called out, a triumphant grin on his face.
For a moment, everything was still. Ryoma stood over the pit, waiting for Kazuichi to emerge. But as the seconds ticked by, his grin began to fade. "No way," he muttered, stepping closer to the edge of the pit. "There’s no way that took you out..."
And then, in a flash, Kazuichi erupted from the ground, his body a blur of motion as he shot into the sky. His clothes were torn, dirt and dust covering his skin, but his eyes burned with determination. Lightning crackled along his arms, the energy building to a crescendo as he descended upon Ryoma.
Ryoma barely had time to react. Kazuichi’s fists slammed into him, sending him skidding across the ground, the force of the impact leaving a crater where Ryoma had stood. But even as he hit the ground, Ryoma’s hands glowed with fiery energy, and in the next instant, he was on his feet again, launching a series of explosive punches at Kazuichi.
The ground shook with each punch, the force of Ryoma’s strikes tearing the earth apart. Kazuichi dodged and blocked as best as he could, but the sheer power behind Ryoma’s attacks was starting to wear him down.
With a final, earth-shattering blow, Ryoma’s fist connected with Kazuichi’s chest, sending him flying across the battlefield. He crashed into a nearby wall, the stone crumbling beneath him as he hit the ground with a thud.
Panting heavily, Kazuichi struggled to get back on his feet. His body ached, and blood trickled from a cut above his eyebrow. Ryoma stood at a distance, breathing heavily as well, his fists still glowing with the energy of his Detonate Blood Art.
"You’re good," Ryoma called out, a grin still plastered on his face. "But I’m not done yet."
Kazuichi wiped the blood from his brow, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He was cornered, forced back against the edge of Yamanashi Stronghold. The walls loomed behind him, and the ground beneath him trembled with the aftershocks of their battle. Ryoma had pushed him to his limit, and for the first time in a long while, Kazuichi felt the pressure of a true challenge.
As he stood there, breathing heavily, Kazuichi knew that he had to dig deeper, push himself beyond what he thought possible if he was going to win this fight. The power surged within him, but even with all his strength, Ryoma had driven him into a corner.
Without sparing a single thought, Kazuichi dove sideways just when Ryoma lunged at him, hands outstretched. Although his entire body felt heavy due to the light injuries he suffered, he knew he had to move.
Then again, right now, all he could do was go on the defensive. If he retaliated, Ryoma would just pummel him and force him mercilessly to the ground. By then, all that Kazuichi had to do was raise his hands up in a surrender.
"Come on, Kazuichi." Ryoma let out as he lunged at Kazuichi once again. And for the second time, Kazuichi dove to the other side, rolling a couple of times on the ground before stopping short.
At that moment, the two of them were at a standstill, waiting for each other to move. Nevertheless, one thing was clear, Kazuichi was losing. And if he didn’t do anything different, he would just face the inevitable defeat.
"I guess I’m left with no other choice." Kazuichi muttered to himself.
