Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 278: Suicidal
Kazuichi staggered back, his breath coming in ragged bursts as he wiped a line of blood from his lip. The fight had been grueling, pushing him to his limits. Ryoma, with his Detonate Blood Art and Ground Element, was more than just powerful—he was relentless. But as Kazuichi caught his breath, he knew he had no choice. This fight wasn’t just about testing strength anymore, it had become about proving something to himself.
With a steady hand, Kazuichi reached into his pocket, fingers curling around the cold, jagged surface of a meteorite fragment. He pulled it out, the small stone glinting in the dim light of the dying sun. His heart pounded in his chest, adrenaline still surging through him from the heat of battle. Without hesitation, he raised the fragment to his lips and bit down, the mineral crunching between his teeth.
The moment the meteorite entered his body, a wave of raw energy coursed through him, the familiar rush of power flooding his veins. His muscles tightened, his vision sharpened, and a surge of heat burned beneath his skin. Overdrive.
Across the battlefield, Ryoma’s eyes bulged wide in disbelief. "W-What are you doing?!" he shouted, his voice laced with both confusion and horror. He could barely comprehend what he was seeing. In their world, consuming meteorite ores directly was akin to suicide—a slow and painful descent into madness. A Hybrid that consumed it in such a raw form would inevitably lose control, their mind consumed by the virus.
"Are you crazy?!" Ryoma yelled, taking a step back, his fists still glowing with the aftereffects of Detonate. "What are you trying to prove?! This was just a friendly fight!" He raised his hands in surrender, waving Kazuichi off in a panic. "It’s not worth your sanity, man! Not for this!"
Kazuichi didn’t respond right away, the rush of energy making his senses roar to life. His eyes glowed faintly, the veins in his arms pulsing with renewed vigor. For a moment, it looked as though he might lose control, his body teetering on the edge of something dangerous. But then, slowly, he relaxed.
"I’m fine," he said, his voice calm, almost casual, as if nothing out of the ordinary had just happened. "I just needed a little boost, that’s all."
Ryoma stared at him, mouth agape, his mind racing. "Fine? What do you mean you’re fine? You just ate a meteorite! You know what that does, don’t you? You’re gonna lose it, man! You’re gonna turn into one of those mindless Hybrids!"
Kazuichi shrugged, as if he hadn’t just consumed something that would drive most Hybrids insane. "Yeah, maybe for some people. But I’ve been doing this for days now. My body’s gotten used to it." He flexed his fingers, feeling the energy humming beneath his skin. "Turns out I’ve adapted. It gives me a nice power-up."
Ryoma’s jaw dropped even further, his hands trembling as he lowered them from his surrender. His chest heaved as he tried to wrap his mind around what Kazuichi was saying. "You... you’ve been doing this for days? How...? That’s insane. You should’ve gone feral by now! This—this isn’t normal!" He ran a hand through his hair, his eyes darting to the ground. He’d seen it happen before—Hybrids who lost themselves after just one bite of meteorite ore. To see Kazuichi casually consuming it like a snack was nothing short of terrifying.
Kazuichi gave a small, almost amused smile. "I know. It’s weird, right? But I’m not like the others, I guess. My body handles it just fine." He rolled his shoulders, feeling the strength flowing through him. "I guess I got lucky."
Ryoma collapsed onto the ground, letting out a long, exhausted sigh. His hands gripped the earth, and he shook his head, torn between relief and disbelief. "You’re insane, man. I thought you were done for. I thought—" His voice cracked slightly, and he quickly wiped at his eyes. "I thought you were going to lose it right in front of me. I wouldn’t have been able to stop you if you had..."
For a moment, there was silence, the tension from the fight melting away as Ryoma struggled to come to terms with what he had witnessed. Kazuichi stood over him, still pulsing with energy, but his gaze softened as he watched Ryoma. There was no need for concern, but he understood why the other Hybrid had reacted the way he did. In this world, survival was fragile, and the line between control and madness was thin.
"Don’t worry," Kazuichi said, his tone reassuring. "I’ve got it under control."
Ryoma let out a shaky breath, finally managing to chuckle, though it was weak and tired. "I don’t think I’ll ever get used to seeing that. You really had me going for a second there." He pushed himself to his feet, still a little unsteady, but the panic had faded from his eyes.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the faint glow of twilight casting shadows over the battlefield, Ryoma dusted himself off and sighed. "You know, I’m pretty sure I had the upper hand for most of that fight," he said with a grin, trying to lighten the mood. "But if this was a real, life-or-death situation? I doubt I could have beaten you—not if you’re pulling stunts like that."
Kazuichi nodded, appreciating the honesty in Ryoma’s words. "Maybe. But it was a good fight. You’ve got serious strength, and that Detonate Blood Art isn’t something to take lightly."
For a moment, the two stood in silence, the camaraderie between them stronger now after their clash. It wasn’t just the physical fight—it was the shared understanding of what it meant to survive in a world that constantly threatened to swallow them whole.
As the darkness began to creep in, Ryoma glanced toward the horizon, then back at Kazuichi. "I guess it’s time for me to head to the next stronghold," he said, his tone quieter now, more reflective. "We should probably get going before more of those Omega Zombies show up. But..." He paused, his eyes meeting Kazuichi’s, and a determined look crossed his face. "Next time we meet, let’s have a proper rematch. No meteorites. Just raw strength."
Kazuichi chuckled, folding his arms across his chest. "It’s a promise. But you better be ready—I don’t plan on losing."
Ryoma smirked, his confidence returning as he held out his hand. "Deal. By the time we meet again, I hope that Gigantic Omega Zombie will be a thing of the past. Then we can really go all out." 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Kazuichi clasped his hand, the grip firm and strong. "Yeah. Next time."
As they released the handshake, Ryoma turned and began walking toward the distant mountains, the fading light casting long shadows over his figure. Kazuichi watched him go for a moment before turning in the opposite direction, his own path leading back toward Kazuichi Stronghold.
The world was still full of dangers, full of battles yet to be fought. But for now, the promise of a rematch lingered in the air, a reminder that no matter how bleak things seemed, there was always another fight waiting on the horizon.
With a final glance over his shoulder, Kazuichi took off toward the stronghold, his body still humming with the energy of the meteorite, his mind already focused on the challenges that lay ahead.
