Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 279: The Start Of A Reunion
The wind swept across the barren landscape, carrying with it the scent of earth and dried foliage. Kazuichi walked with purpose, each step steady, though his thoughts were far from calm. The battle with Ryoma had taken its toll, not just physically but mentally. Still, the promise of returning to Kazuichi Stronghold gave him focus. It had been too long since he’d seen the place he called home, and after everything that had happened, he needed that sense of familiarity.
For hours, he moved swiftly, the terrain growing rougher as he approached the mountain ranges that separated the stronghold from the rest of the wasteland. His muscles ached, and the weight of the recent battles hung heavy in his chest, but he couldn’t afford to slow down. He knew more dangers lurked in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Suddenly, as he rounded a bend near a rocky outcrop, a familiar voice called out from behind him.
"Kazuichi!"
The sound of his name stopped him in his tracks. He turned around, his eyes widening in surprise as he saw her. Himeno stood just a few feet away, a wide grin on her face. Her figure, framed by the jagged rocks and the soft glow of the afternoon sun, was a sight for sore eyes. Without a second thought, she dashed forward and threw her arms around him.
Warmth flooded Kazuichi’s chest, the fatigue of the journey momentarily forgotten as he hugged her back. "Himeno..." he murmured, a soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips. He hadn’t expected to see her, especially not here of all places, and the relief in knowing she was alright hit him harder than he’d anticipated. "You’re still okay."
Pulling back, Himeno beamed up at him, though her eyes held a hint of sadness. "I heard what happened to Kaito," she said, her voice softer now. "And I heard what you did for him."
Kazuichi’s gaze faltered for a moment. The memory of Kaito’s death was still raw, a fresh wound in his heart that hadn’t yet had time to heal. He’d avenged his friend, but vengeance hadn’t erased the pain. "I did what I had to," he said quietly, his voice barely audible over the wind. "He didn’t deserve what happened to him."
Himeno placed a hand on his arm, her touch gentle. "Thank you," she said, her words sincere. "You gave him justice. That’s all any of us could have asked for."
For a moment, they stood in silence, the weight of loss settling between them. But it wasn’t a bitter silence—it was the kind that came when words weren’t necessary, when shared understanding was enough. Himeno had known Kaito as well as Kazuichi had, and in that quiet, they mourned together.
Eventually, Himeno stepped back and gestured toward the horizon. "You’re heading back to the stronghold, right?" she asked, her tone brightening again. "Mind if I join you? I was actually heading there myself."
Kazuichi raised an eyebrow, a curious smile forming on his lips. "You? Going to Kazuichi Stronghold? What for?"
Himeno laughed softly, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "I finally got some time off," she explained, her voice light but filled with excitement. "Ryuunosuke gave me permission to visit. There’s someone there I’ve been meaning to see for a long time now."
"Someone?" Kazuichi’s curiosity deepened. "Who?"
"Arukawa Ryota," Himeno replied, her expression softening. "My right-hand man from Yamanashi. He’s been working as a scout in your stronghold, right?"
Kazuichi nodded, realization dawning on him. "Yeah, he’s been with us for a while now. He... he thought you were dead, you know."
Himeno’s eyes flickered with surprise and sadness. "He thought I—? Oh..." She sighed, shaking her head as if to shake off the weight of it. "We never had the chance to tell him, did we?"
"No," Kazuichi admitted. "Things have been so chaotic. There wasn’t a good time, and to be honest, we didn’t even know if you’d survived until recently. He’s going to be overjoyed when he sees you."
Himeno’s expression softened, a wistful smile on her lips. "Ryota’s like a brother to me. After everything we went through back at Yamanashi... I owe him so much. I’m just glad I can finally reunite with him."
As they resumed walking, the landscape shifted subtly, the air growing crisper as they ascended higher into the mountains. The terrain here was treacherous, with jagged rocks and uneven paths, but neither of them seemed to mind. They had fought through worse.
Along the way, they exchanged stories, the conversation flowing easily between them. Kazuichi told Himeno about his recent battles, including the encounter with the Gigantic Omega Zombie, while she recounted her experiences at Hybrid Mountain Stronghold under Ryuunosuke’s leadership. There was a familiarity to their exchanges, a sense of comfort that only came from surviving the same harsh world.
"I can’t believe how far we’ve come," Himeno said at one point, her voice carrying a mix of awe and exhaustion. "There were days I didn’t think we’d make it past the first outbreak. And now... here we are, still fighting."
Kazuichi nodded thoughtfully, his gaze drifting toward the distant horizon. "It’s never really over, though, is it? The fight. It just changes form."
Himeno glanced at him, her eyes searching his face. "You’ve changed, Kazuichi. You’re not the same guy I remember."
He shrugged, a small, almost bittersweet smile on his lips. "No one comes out of this unchanged. We’ve all had to adapt."
The conversation quieted after that, both of them lost in their own thoughts as the stronghold loomed closer. Kazuichi’s mind wandered back to Ryota, to the moment when they would reunite. Ryota had been devastated when he thought Himeno was lost. To see the joy in his friend’s eyes when he realized she was still alive—it was something Kazuichi was looking forward to.
As they approached the gates of Kazuichi Stronghold, the massive walls rose up before them, a familiar sight that stirred a sense of relief in Kazuichi’s chest. But at the same time, something gnawed at the back of his mind—a lingering unease that he couldn’t quite shake. The stronghold had always been a safe haven, but with every passing day, the threats outside seemed to grow more dangerous, more unpredictable.
"We’re here," Himeno said, her voice breaking through his thoughts. She paused just before the gates, her expression unreadable as she gazed up at the towering structure. "It feels strange, doesn’t it? To be back after everything."
Kazuichi nodded slowly. "Yeah. It does."
The gates began to creak open, the sound echoing through the still air. As they stood at the threshold, poised to enter, Kazuichi couldn’t help but feel a sense of foreboding. Something was coming, he could feel it in his bones. But for now, he pushed that thought aside.
"Ryota’s going to lose his mind when he sees you," Kazuichi said, glancing at Himeno with a faint smile.
She chuckled softly, though her eyes remained focused on the stronghold ahead. "I hope so. It’s been too long." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Together, they stepped through the gates, the weight of the journey behind them and the uncertainty of the future ahead. But just as they crossed the threshold, a distant sound caught Kazuichi’s attention—a low, rumbling noise that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up.
He froze, his body instinctively tensing, and he shot a glance at Himeno.
"What was that?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Kazuichi’s heart pounded in his chest, and his gaze swept across the horizon, searching for the source of the noise. Whatever it was, it didn’t sound friendly.
And then, before he could respond, the ground beneath them trembled.
