Chapter 17: Exploration

According to them, all the villagers had long left the mountain village, but at first, no one wanted to leave this village. They even planned on doing a protest to stop the mining companies from ruining their beautiful home, together.

My Grandmother told us that day, my grandfather was really happy as we planned to stop the mining in the Wong Zhi mountain. Everything was going fine, but the next morning, when he woke up, all the villagers had packed their stuff and left, without even saying a word to them.

That broke my grandpa’s heart, and he had a paralytic attack. After that, she took him to the hospital, but he wanted to stay in the mountain village, his home.

All of this story looks pretty fine to me, but the only thing I didn’t know was why these demons would let these villagers leave, and for some reason, these demons didn’t seem to haunt my grandparents, only us. These things were answered, but now at least I know, things are as wrong as I think.

And about my grandparents, I am not sure if they are still human.

"Shouldn’t we take grandpa and grandma back to the city with us. Staying here is so creepy. We are all alone in the mountain, and we can’t even call the police if anything happens." Emi said, walking behind me, as I walked through the weeds-covered path.

I looked at her phone; there was no tower, then checked mine, same as hers. I didn’t know what to say at this moment, but I had to say something good. After all, I got the powers now, I have to act like a man.

"I too think so, but let me take a washroom break and stay here, instead of following me around."

I quickly went into one of the empty houses, the walls fallen off, with weeds taking over the place. I quickly checked my summoning mark and found Mink wandering in hell plane, hunting some demonic rabbits. Without wasting a second, I pulled him out into the real world.

A tiny flash of white light, Mink appeared in the room. His tiny red body and pointed ears were moving gently, his neck taking a 90-degree turn, as his tiny pointed tail waved around in the air.

After observing the surroundings for a few seconds, he opened his mouth and spat out a few words, "Chee... cha.... Che..."

Obviously, I didn’t get a single thing that he was saying, but somehow, I was able to guess what he meant. If what I felt wasn’t wrong, then he meant that he was smelling a lot of demons in the mountain, powerful ones.

"Oh, calm down, I had a little work for you. Go out, check the surroundings, and tell me how many demons there actually are, and what they are planning here." I said, knowing this mf was smart, way too smart for a demon, he had met so far.

These demons in the mountain might be strong, but this little rat is hard to catch, so it would be very unlikely that he would be killed.

"Che... cha..."

I was really shocked by this little one’s words, from what he guessed from his cheee chaaa that he wanted candies to this work for me.

"We can consider the payment according to your work, a candy for each demon you hunt and 100 candies if you find out their plans. What do you think?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

I offered him generously, wanting to see if he actually had any negotiating skills or not. Luckily, he didn’t have any negotiating skills and quickly accepted the offer.

His dark eyes gave me a long look, telling me to remember his payment, as flashed out like lightning from the house. His speed was so fast that I barely saw a tiny red flash vanishing into the woods.

When I walked out of the house, Emi was still waiting for me outside, looking at her surroundings warily as if something might pop up out of the woods all of a sudden.

"Let’s go, check that place where y... we, we heard the singing last night." I quickly corrected myself. I have already told her that I too heard that sound, now if I say I didn’t hear it. She might not be able to keep her composure anymore.

"Why should we go there? Didn’t grandmother say, there are a lot of wild animals, and it’s dangerous?" She said, not wanting to confront her fear. After all, she had heard a song coming from the woods in the middle of a terrifying storm, even in daylight, going there without internet or a way to report their disappearance scared her.

"Follow me, or stay here, and why do you think there are still any wild animals? I think those miners would have dealt with them long ago." I said confidently, because demons are always hungry, just like that little Mink, who wants to eat everything he sees. Well, his senses and taste buds were those of a kid, so his hunger could be dealt with those candies.

I was sure there wouldn’t be any wild animal that would attack us; it would likely be a demon, which wasn’t actually a great thing, but knowing the danger was. That’s why I wasn’t worried much about it and led the way forward.

I was planning to use this chance to show off my powers; this way, I won’t have to risk much while showing off. With Mink, it should be easier to deal with demons, because he was good at mass killing, just like what he did with the pack of wolves; doing the same here would make things much easier for me.

As we walked through that narrow path, the sounds of the wind and water droplets falling through leaves became clearer, and even our own footsteps were clearly audible to us.

We continued to move forward. Emi was grabbing my shirt, following me like a shadow. I glanced at her face and found her covered in sweat.
