Chapter 3: Strange Forest

Without the need for words, Arthur communicated with the system mentally, for in a strange way he was able to sense its presence inside his head.

He commanded it to show him the information of the Primal Predator bloodline he had obtained, and fortunately the system responded to him without any issues.

A faint buzzing sound rang in his ears, then a massive golden screen appeared before him carrying a powerful ethereal aura that made his body shiver.

[ Primal Predator (SSS): A legendary bloodline from primordial ages that makes its bearer a predator by nature who knows no mercy, and a master of the food chain.]

[ — Blood thirst and emotional suppression.

— A 5% chance to absorb the bloodline of the monsters you eat.

— When HP drops by 80%, all base Attributes increase by 50% for 15 seconds ]

Upon seeing the effects of his bloodline Arthur felt happy, and praised it with a satisfied smile. "This truly is a legendary bloodline."

While he was reading the information again, his eyes stopped on the eating part, and at that moment he noticed an important thing he had overlooked.

"Wait, I am a wolf now and I cannot cook with this body of mine for I have no hands and fingers, so does this mean that my food from today onward will be raw meat?"

His expression froze for a moment, and after a short while, he could only feel regret. "Disgusting, and here I was thinking cheap fast food was a form of torture."

Just thinking about it made him feel nauseous, but unfortunately he had no other options, he was forced to trample on his pride as a civilized human and become a beast that hunts in cold blood.

Arthur ignored this annoying detail, and redirected his focus toward the system, and read the information of the rest of the Skills he had obtained, which turned out to be more useful than he had expected.

The Evaluation skill allowed him to inspect creatures and objects and obtain important information about them with just a glance.

As for the Dimensional Storage skill, it enabled him to store objects inside a separate spatial pocket that no one other than him could access.

But despite the importance and usefulness of these two Skills, in truth the skill that captured his attention the most was Enhanced Senses, whose effect was to multiply the strength of his senses several times over.

He felt excited to try it, he took a deep breath and directed all his focus toward activating the skill, and contrary to his expectations, he succeeded without any notable effort on the first attempt.

The world around him changed completely, his vision improved, and everything around him became extremely clear, to the point that he could see the small details on the bodies of some ants that were near the cave entrance.

And not only that, even the rest of his senses improved greatly, his nose picked up dozens of various scents and in an astonishing way he was able to distinguish the direction from which each scent came, and the same applied to sounds.

He stared at the entrance before him for a moment, and without further hesitation, he stood up, and headed toward it, and the moment he stepped out of the cave, the scene of a vast forest teeming with life greeted him.

The trees around him were towering in height, and the air was very pure, as for the fertile ground it was filled with green grass, and he even saw some large insects flying here and there.

He opened his mouth slightly, in awe of how beautiful and strange the place was, but his positive impression did not last long, for he quickly saw a giant mosquito the size of a rat lurking near a small frog.

The mosquito suddenly lunged at the frog, plunged its massive needle into its back, and sucked out all the blood in its body turning it into a dry lifeless shell. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

[ Swamp Mosquito — Common — Unranked ]

Arthur tried the Evaluation skill on the mosquito, and watched it cautiously until it moved away, and then he scoffed in disappointment. "If this is just an ordinary mosquito, then what do the other creatures look like?"

A little hesitation returned to him, he scanned his densely treed surroundings, then stole a quick glance at the cave behind him. "This is bad, very bad, perhaps this new life of mine will be very short."

It was truly difficult to absorb and accept everything that was happening, he remained standing in place for several minutes thinking, and in the end he found that he had only one option before him.

’I do not know the type of creatures lurking nearby, but fear and hiding will not do me any good, and also why worry, I am a predatory beast now, my claws and fangs can be considered deadly weapons, and most important of all, I am very thirsty, and I feel hungry, I must find a water source quickly, and some food as well.’

He gathered his courage, and walked forward with extreme caution, watched where he placed his feet, and examined everything around him with the Evaluation skill, and this gave him an idea of the nature of this forest he was in, its climate was semi-temperate, and its atmosphere was spring-like.

After about twenty minutes, and when he had moved about half a mile away from his cave, his Enhanced Senses picked up an interesting scent, and he heard a very faint chewing sound.

His beastly instincts reacted, and he automatically realized that there was prey close to him, he felt anxious and turned toward the source of the sound and scent, at that moment he saw a strange grey beast, eating grass about two hundred meters away from him.

[ Dashlagus Rabbit — Common — Rank F ]

’Just a rabbit? And it is the same Rank as me, that is truly reassuring.’ He felt relieved that the beast was within the range of his abilities.

His features turned ferocious, and he thought with a kind of impulsiveness. ’This little one, a perfect target to be the first monster I hunt.’

His body tensed, and excitement took hold of him, the idea of hunting was frightening and at the same time thrilling, for even humans possess a wild nature within them.

Without wasting any second, he took a deep breath, and activated the effects of the "Primal Predator" bloodline.

The moment its effects appeared, all his surging emotions disappeared, and all that remained was a coldness and an intense blood thirst, and even his thoughts became much clearer.

Arthur was surprised, and had his bloodline not suppressed his emotions and reactions, he would have displayed an astonished expression.

His instincts took control, and like a true predator he slowly crept toward the unsuspecting rabbit.

His footsteps were nearly soundless, and he also prevented his scent from spreading by walking against the direction of the wind, and because of that he was able to get close to the rabbit without it noticing him.

When only a few meters separated him from his prey, his instincts told him that this was the right moment to attack.

But when he was about to pounce on it, the rabbit stopped eating, raised its head and moved its nose, then darted away at a frantic speed, and entered a nearby burrow.

Arthur did not find enough time to chase it because of its great speed. He watched the entrance of the small burrow coldly, and after about a minute, he deactivated the effects of his bloodline and sighed in frustration. "I failed, this is truly not an encouraging start."

He raised his head and looked at the clear sky which indicated that the day was still in its midpoint. ’No matter, based on what I learned from documentaries, predators fail in most hunting attempts, I must find a new target, and try again.’
