Chapter 144: Glowing Carts

From the peak of the mountain, through the hazy white rain, Stanley saw a large city full of lights and colors that he simply could not believe at all.

Even through the rain, even though it was daytime, he could tell that the city could get brighter than daytime back in his now destroyed town.

He stared at the magnificence of the city that was far beyond where he could reach right away and wondered to himself if he was truly seeing something that was there, or if he was somehow sick as well.

A bright flash of light close by pulled away his attention as the thunderous roar came just a few seconds later. It broke him out of his stupefied state and brought back the urgency that he had nearly lost.

Sheila was dying and he needed to save her.

Without hesitation, he ran down the mountain, going in and out of trees as he walked slowly reached the base of the mountain.

He saw a lightning strike fall in the distance. It fell to the ground.

Stanley looked in surprise. He didn’t know lightning strikes could do that at all. He had heard of them striking the cliff and the rocks from the cliff falling down to the ground, but never had he seen them fall to the ground.

Was that real? How come he had never seen that before?

After running for a few more minutes, he arrived out of the forest, and apparently onto a black road he couldn’t make sense of.

He could see electrical poles like the ones back in his town, but these ones had no wires coming from them, which confused him a little.

This was no time for confusion.

High in the sky, he could see multiple... something moving in the rain. They had bright lights around them, so he couldn’t even tell what they were.

He decided to follow one of them, hoping that they were going to the bright city as well.

He started running on the black road, seeing more of those similar things but on the ground this time. He saw one closely and couldn’t tell what it was exactly.

However, seeing that it was on the ground, on the road, it had to be a cart of some sort that ran without a bull pulling on it.

He continued running for a while in his deranged fashion when he saw a bright orange light in the distance flash. Then a mighty burst of light fell onto him, nearly blinding him as a result.

A slightly distorted voice came from the light source as it spoke something.

"Patts er hands en se air," the voice called out to him. Stanley couldn’t tell what was happening. He could only make out the words Hands and Air after all.

"Is there someone there?" he asked urgently. "I need help. This girl is sick."

The voice stopped for a moment. Then, a moment later the light died down a little and the metal cart that he had been seeing slowly landed on the ground.

Two people walked out of it in strange clothes with what were clearly guns in their hands. They said some things again, of which he could make out a few words.

However, of those words, he understood a few, just enough to understand that they were asking something about the girl.

He quickly took Sheila from his shoulder and threw away the leather armor he used to save her from the elements. As soon as it was off, the two people saw her bright red face and the cut-off arm.

They immediately moved and Stanley slowed down time at the same time.

The world came to a crawl. He saw the irregular shape of the water drops that always looked like a straight line to him. He saw the slowly moving two people and their lights going in and out multiple times at once.

And he felt nothing dangerous happening in the future, so he let the time flow back to normal.

The two people came and checked on Sheila and it was only then that Stanley even realized that one of them was a girl.

The man let the woman check on Sheila, and she quickly said some words back, of which Stanley understood sick and care.

He stepped back as the man quickly ran to the cart with the light they came in and brought back something. They placed something on her that created a bubble of shield around her as she slowly floated up.

Then, the man came for Stanley.

Hands and Air were the only words he understood at all. However, along with the gesture the man-made, Stanley somewhat understood what the man was talking about.

Stanley followed the man’s instructions and placed his hand in the air. The man then pulled out something and placed it in between Stanley’s hands.

Stanley looked above him, wondering what was going to happen. As he watched, two yellow lights appeared out of nowhere and wrapped only his arms.

He quickly pulled his arm back in surprise, but it didn’t seem like it was harmful at all. When he saw closely, it was some sort of metal wire that was using a shield around it that was sitting around his wrists.

He paused for a second and looked at the man in front of him. Only now did he understand what was happening.

"Am I being captured?" he asked the man in surprise. "I’m not a criminal."

The man said nothing. He walked behind Stanley, but Stanley kept turning around.

The man said something at that time, the gesture of which made Stanley believe that he wanted to not move at all.

Stanley did as he thought he was asked and stayed still for long enough so that the man could do what he wanted to. He wasn’t afraid of anything dangerous happening, as he could just wait for his danger sense to tell him what was going to happen.

He felt the strap on his chest loosen up as the man took away the sword. Stanley was about to say something when she realized that was what one was supposed to do when one suspected someone of being a criminal.

He let the man take away the sword, albeit with a bit of frustration. Then, the woman came and said something.

"Come... me..." she said, which meant very little to Stanley, but the gesture made him realize that she was telling him to go to the glowing cart behind her.

Stanley didn’t move immediately as he wasn’t a criminal, but when he saw Sheila being placed on top of the cart, he decided to move as well.

He let the man take him and place him inside the thing that was made all out of metal, just like the machines back in the mayor’s secret room.

Then, the two people in front of him got back into it as well and then, the thing started flying away.

Stanley was startled a bit, but not as much as he had seen the thing fly before. He looked around him and saw a glass pane window that showed the view of the world around him.

Even in the rain, it looked beautiful.
