Strongest Nova: Path of Vengeance
Chapter 179: Back to Freenox
After handing over the unconscious David to the local authority of the Yardin city, as requested by the Barson government, Stanley and Gray took a ride back to Freenox city to announce their mission’s success.
"Does this... count as a success?" Stanley asked after keeping to himself for a while.
Reena, who was driving the car, looked toward him with a confused look. "Why would it not be?" she asked. "We did what we came here to do."
"I know. I’m... I’m not talking about the mission," he said. "I’m talking about myself. The reason why you two came with me was because you wanted to see if I was taking care of everything by myself. But I wasn’t. I needed Gray’s help."
"Oh, don’t worry about that," Reena said. "It’s my fault for not realizing what the man was capable of. There’s nothing you could’ve done from the start since you got the wrong info."
"Oh, okay," Stanley said. Maybe he was just overthinking it.
"Did you get the info wrong, Reena?" Gray asked from the backseat when he was laying with his eyes closed.
"Obviously I did," Reena said, a little annoyed at herself. "I swear, he could only make simple dirt puppets from what I could find. I even asked Caleb to help me with it. I don’t know what actually happened really."
"Hmm..." Gray thought for a bit. "Is Caleb asleep yet?"
"It should be the evening in Starhall right now, so I doubt he is," Reena mentioned.
"Can you call him please?" he said and lay there.
Stanley waited curiously to see what was going on. A few seconds later Caleb appeared on the screen.
"Hey, sis," the young boy spoke up. "What’s up?"
"Caleb, hi. Gray wants to speak with you," Reena said and showed the back of the vehicle where Gray was sleeping.
Gray remained sleeping with his eyes closed, but he spoke up. "Caleb, are you free?" he asked.
"Uhh... free enough to talk, brother Gray. Do you have some work for me?" he asked.
"Yeah," Gray said. "Remember the task the director gave you about a month ago? The one with finding people with missing records?"
"The one from United Voras? I remember that. I’m still working on it," Caleb said as he started chewing on something.
"I need you to see if the David guy we just dealt with has ever been there in the past few months, and if he has, see if he has any records on it," Gray said.
"Got it, brother Gray," he said. "I will let you know if I find anything."
"Thanks, Caleb. I’ll treat you to a meal someday," Gray said and the call ended.
"United Voras?" Reena turned toward Gray. "What’s that about?"
"Don’t know," he said. "It’s something weird alright. I’m trying to see if it has any connection to something."
"Are you going to tell me anything?" Reena asked.
"I will, once we find something else," Gray said. "But that might take som— wait."
He quickly got back up and pulled something out of his pockets. "This... can we tell where someone was from this?" Gray asked, showing something to the two of them.
Stanley turned and saw a small black square with some small tendrils coming out on either side. Reena looked at it before turning back around.
"Whose chip is that?" she asked.
"David’s," Gray said. "He was controlling the bomb with it, so I thought to take it out. It should also have other information we need right?"
"Maybe, we’ll have to check," Reena said. "Let’s take it back to the engineers. See what they can do."
"Sure," Gray said and laid back down on the seat. "Urgh, this is so annoying. Why can’t things be easier?"
Reena said nothing, letting him complain. He did it all the time, and she was used to it by now.
"Oh yeah, how was the sword?" Gray remembered. "Nice, right?"
"It was good," Stanley said. "Not as sharp as it would’ve hoped for it to be, but I guess that’s alright."
"I think they can add some sharpness. We never really got to let them do some final improvements, so it should be done this time around," Gray said. "We will also have them add the license."
Stanley nodded. "If we ignore the sharpness, then it was an amazing sword," he said.
"Haha, it’s more of a club than anything, isn’t it?" Gray asked. "Those guys at headquarters really created something good."
Stanley agreed. It truly was good.
"I bet it cost just as much too," Reena said. "Such a large amount of Adamantine should have been hard to find."
"I wouldn’t know. I just asked them to make me something," Gray said, laughing out loud.
Stanley wondered how expensive his sword was. He had never really seen anything that good. If it was sharp on top of how heavy it was, it would truly be one of the most incredible swords out there for certain.
At that point... would he be able to get his revenge?
’I should be quite strong,’ he thought. But then... Raven had acquired more than double the number of souls he had gained and she had already been a Nova for quite some time before that too.
He couldn’t hastily get into his revenge. He would to train more, and maybe get some more powers. But... was that possible.
"Do you guys think I still have more powers I can unlock with the amount of souls I have?" he asked. "Or have I already used it all up?"
Reena said nothing as she didn’t find her authority on Nova higher than the man that was in the backseat of her vehicle. So, she let him speak.
"How many did you gain again? 7000?" he asked.
"About," Stanley said. "It’s what the Shadow Nova said I stole from her."
Gray thought for a bit and answered. "Here’s two things I know are fact."
"One, it takes time for you to absorb all the souls you get."
"Two, if you exert yourself over your bodily limit, you will end up stealing from those souls to keep yourself from collapsing."
"That is why most Novas refuse to take a step out of their hiding place after they acquire a number of souls."
"However, even if you exerted yourself, there isn’t much you can steal. And from how strong your body is, you haven’t exerted much beyond what your body is capable of even during our training sessions."
"So, you should have absorbed most of the souls that you gained. As for how long that would take? It really depends on the Nova, but it should be between a month and 2."
"So, you might still have a few more powers that you can manifest or a few improvements to your current powers. But I doubt you are gaining anything more than that."
Stanley remained quiet for a while. "So this is what I have to work with?" he asked.
"Why? Do you want more?" Gray asked.
"If I could with the existing amount of souls I had, I would," Stanley said. "Not if I have to kill more people though."
Gray smiled. "That’s the right answer," he said.
They continued flying for a while, talking about various other things before Stanley remembered something that David said.
"Oh right, do you know what... uhh... vandalizer is?" he asked.
"Vandalizer? What is that?" Reena asked.
"I don’t know, but it’s something that David guy said. He asked if I was sent by the vandalizer," Stanley said.
"Ah! Vandalizers," Reena remembered. "Yeah, yeah, I know what that is."
"What’s Vandalizers?" Gray asked too.
"It’s David’s rivals in the business. A group of arms dealers just like him, but they work together, while David is a lone wolf. He might have thought someone from the other side put a hit on him."
"I see," Gray said. "Makes sense why he would think that."
"So... it was just another group of arms dealers?" Stanley asked. "Is Black Lake the same then?"
"Black Lake?" Gray was surprised. "I’m surprised he even knows who they are. He must have quite a deep connection to the underworld then."
"What’s Black lake?" Reena asked.
"It’s an Assassins guild with only the world’s best assassins working in it," Gray said. "One of them had once approached me, asking me to work for them after realizing how strong I was."
"What did you do?" Reena asked.
"I killed him, of course. Can’t let a nefarious Assassin living around," Gray said. "Still, it’s a surprise the bald dude even thought they were after him. I wonder why he thought that."
"Maybe he thought the Vandlizers sent a Black Lake assassin to kill him," Reena said.
"That’s possible," Gray said. "He must’ve been quite scared then."
Stanley took in the informations he heard with quite a bit of interest. Assassins, rival arms dealers. Those weren’t the sort of thing one heard so casually in their daily life.
"And he said another name," Stanley spoke again. "It was... what did he say?"
"You don’t remember?" Reena asked.
"No, I wasn’t really paying attention to all the names," Stanley said. "I should have remembered."
"We can just listen to your recording," Reena said and quickly pulled up a file from the computer and started playing it.
Stanley was surprised how everything he heard or did was recorded in this. They reached the point where David spoke and heard the name.
Silent Nexus.
"Yeah that. What is that?" Stanley asked.
Both Reena and Gray were completely stumped.
"I don’t know," Gray said. "This is my first time hearing it."
