Chapter 77: The Hisponians

The private solar of the Hispo Pack was no less exquisite than the grand chambers that preceded it, yet it possessed a distinctly cozy, welcoming touch. Lush green trees and trailing vines decorated the perimeter, filling the air with a crisp, refreshing scent of fertile earth and blooming flora. Long, arched windows glowed warmly as the afternoon sun illuminated the room, casting golden beams across the polished marble floor.

King Kaius and Queen Thalindra sat elegantly upon a plush, woven couch, serene smiles gracing their regal features. Opposite them sat Odesse and Prince Ronan. Odesse’s posture was delicate but poised, dressed in a royal Hisponian attire crafted from vibrant, gold-threaded textiles that beautifully illuminated the rich culture of the region. Ronan sat beside her—not too close, but close enough to offer a grounding presence as they faced the high monarchs.

The heavy door opened quietly, and a handmaiden with glowing, rich dark skin, short curly brown hair, and a beautifully curved, chubby stature walked in. She carried a polished brass tray bearing four clay cups that sent ribbons of fragrant steam into the air. Stepping to the center of the solar, she bent down gracefully to place the hot drinks upon the low table separating the two couches. Straightening her spine, she bowed deeply to the royal family and made her way out, closing the door gently behind her.

King Kaius fixed his warm, golden-brown eyes on Odesse, breaking the comfortable silence. "Alright, child," he said, his deep voice resonating with genuine curiosity. "Would you mind telling us how you came to be found in our sacred river?"

Odesse’s expression tightened with sudden concern. She looked at the monarchs, her heart fluttering. "I... I myself do not know how I got here, Your Majesty."

Ronan turned his head slightly, his striking grey eyes analyzing her gentle features. "Do you remember any circumstance... anything at all... that may have driven you to our borders?"

Odesse looked down at her lap, her fingers twisting the fabric of her gown. "Should I tell them?" she questioned herself, a wave of vulnerability washing over her. "Will they understand, or will they judge me? Will they think I am completely crazy?"

Sensing the young woman’s internal battle, Queen Thalindra leaned forward, a brilliant, maternal smile gracing her lips. "Child," she assured softly, her voice carrying the smooth warmth of a summer breeze. "If you are in trouble, we assure you that we will try to help you in any way we can. You are safe within these walls."

Odesse looked up, meeting the queen’s compassionate gaze. She closed her eyes tightly, exhaling a long, shuddering breath to steady her racing heart. When she opened them, her gaze was resolute. "Whatever I am about to tell you... please, you must trust and believe me."

The king and queen exchanged a swift, concerning look before turning their full, undivided attention back to Odesse.

As Odesse hesitated, the sheer weight of her past month pressing down on her shoulders, Ronan spoke softly beside her. "You do not have to force yourself, Odesse. If it is too painful, you do not have to speak."

Odesse offered him a small, grateful smile. "Thank you, Prince Ronan. But I must." She turned back to King Kaius, her voice thick with rising emotion. "Your Majesty... my husband. He is being taken away from me. His very soul is being stolen."

King Kaius furrowed his brow, his commanding presence softening with confusion. "I do not quite understand what you mean, child."

"I shall start from the beginning," Odesse whispered, taking a deep, steadying breath. "So that you may truly understand the horror of what has occurred."

With her hands trembling against her knees, Odesse recounted everything. She spoke of the Moonlight Pack, of her profound bond with Alpha King Valex, and the sudden, devastating arrival of Azure. She detailed the malicious witchcraft, the tragic loss of her friend Eryx and her unborn child, and the agonizing moment she was cast away, leaving an imposter to claim her throne.

The solar fell into a dead, suffocating silence. The king, queen, and prince listened without interruption, their faces morphing from curiosity to absolute shock and unadulterated horror.

By the time Odesse finished her tale, heavy tears were rolling down her cheeks, catching the golden sunlight. The high monarchs stared at each other, completely stunned by the cruelty of Azure.

Breaking the silence, Queen Thalindra stood up. Her elegant, sweeping skirts brushed the floor as she crossed the room and stopped directly in front of Odesse. As Odesse looked up through her tears, the queen bent down, wrapping her powerful, gracefully curved arms around the broken girl.

"Child," Thalindra murmured against her hair, her own voice laced with deep sorrow. "How agonizing that must have been. I am so deeply sorry."

The dam broke completely. Odesse clung to the queen, her tears flowing freely as she finally allowed herself to share the burden of her grief with someone else.

"What do we do about this, Father?"

Ronan’s voice cut through the emotional atmosphere, straight and ice-cold. He stood up abruptly, his heavenly, muscular frame rigid with righteous fury. Odesse and Queen Thalindra parted from their hug, looking up at him. "She needs to get back to her pack," Ronan continued, his grey eyes flashing. "We cannot sit idle while that vile woman destroys a king and dismantles an entire kingdom."

Queen Thalindra sat down on the couch beside Odesse, keeping a comforting hand on her shoulder as they both looked toward King Kaius. The king rested his jaw in his hand, his expression deeply contemplative.

"The Moonlight Pack is incredibly far from our borders, Ronan," King Kaius reasoned slowly. "Even with our swiftest horses, it may take up to a full week before you reach their territory. And that is only if the roads remain clear and no unforeseen calamities happen along the way."

"Then we will need to get the royal carriages prepared immediately," Ronan responded, turning his focus entirely toward solving the problem. He looked back down at Odesse, his hardened expression instantly melting into a warm, reassuring smile. "It will take a few days to reinforce the structures. I will personally inspect the fleet to ensure we select a carriage durable enough for such a grueling journey."

King Kaius stood up smoothly, his commanding stature radiating wisdom. "So, in the meantime, while your transportation is being meticulously prepared, why don’t you show our guest around the region, Prince Ronan? Odesse, you have been through a terrible ordeal. You deserve to taste a bit of fresh air before you return to fight for your pack."

Queen Thalindra stood up as well, nodding in firm agreement. "Yes, Odesse. Prince Ronan shall take you to the most beautiful, vibrant places in our territory. Right, Ronan?"

Ronan looked back at Odesse, his eyes bright. "It would be my absolute honor."

King Kaius began walking toward the door, but he paused beside Odesse. Placing a large, gentle hand upon her shoulder, he looked deeply into her eyes. "Remember this, young queen: violence may solve immediate problems, but a ruler who knows how to use kindness, grace, and positive charm to manipulate the minds of men is far greater than one who relies solely on brutal strength. Defeat your enemy by being everything she is not." 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Odesse absorbed his words, nodding softly. King Kaius removed his hand, walked to the heavy door, and slipped out of the solar, closing it quietly behind him.

Queen Thalindra turned to Odesse, a knowing, powerful glint in her grey eyes. "Woman to woman, queen to queen, my advice to you is this: if you truly believe your soul and your husband’s soul are divinely connected, then you do not need to shout or wage an unholy war to be seen. Your charms alone will steal his heart back the very moment he lays eyes on you. Do not let worry mar your beautiful features."

The queen reached out, her dark, flawless hand gently caressing Odesse’s cheek with pure maternal tenderness. A bright, teasing smile broke across Thalindra’s face. "Wrinkles of worry and stress do no one any good, child. They only make the skin beg for mercy, and a queen must never let her skin beg. Do you agree?"

Odesse let out a soft, genuine chuckle, shaking her head. "No, Your Majesty. I do not want that."

"Excellent," Queen Thalindra smiled. She turned her attention to her son, who was standing a bit too still, his eyes utterly locked onto Odesse’s smiling face. The queen cleared her throat loudly.

Ronan flinched, his head snapping toward his mother.

Thalindra smiled playfully, her eyes dancing with amusement. "Make sure to take her to every beautiful corner of our town before she departs in a few days. And ensure she picks out an abundance of gifts to take with her. We Hisponians never let a revered guest leave without our scent and our treasures lingering around them."

Odesse’s eyes brightened at the thought. "I shall certainly try to find many things to take home. I am very sure my best friend, Cara, would absolutely love them."

"Wonderful, then," Queen Thalindra said. With a final, graceful wave of her hand, she walked toward the exit, slipped through the door, and closed it slowly, leaving the two of them alone in the sunlit room.

Ronan turned to Odesse, the regal poise dropping slightly to reveal his genuine sympathy. "I am truly sorry for the horrors you have endured, Odesse."

Odesse looked up at him, a cold, unyielding resolve suddenly washing over her features as she tightened her hands into fists. "It is alright, Prince Ronan. The trauma is in the past. My main goal now is to ensure I completely eliminate that woman, Azure. She will pay for what she did."

Ronan stared at her. Seeing the chilling, fierce protective instinct burning in the eyes of this otherwise gentle woman, a thought crossed his mind "Your husband really should be incredibly grateful he has a mate who would willingly kill to save him."

He cleared his throat softly, gesturing toward the sunlit windows. "Well, we do not need to rush to the town this very moment. Perhaps you would like to rest and we can venture out tomorrow?"

Odesse’s eyes glistened with sudden excitement, a wide, breathtaking smile breaking across her face. "No, please! I want to go to the town today. If your palace is this magnificent, I can only imagine how beautiful and lively the rest of your kingdom must be."

Ronan’s heart skipped a beat at her enthusiasm. He let out a warm laugh. "Very well, then. Let us go."

...

An hour later, after Odesse had properly refreshed herself, she and Prince Ronan walked through the bustling gates of the Hispo grand market town. The moment they stepped into the open air, Odesse’s breath caught in her throat. The environment was an explosion of life, color, and joyous energy, completely unlike the traditional, rigid towns of the northern packs.

Vibrant, hand-woven fabrics of emerald, crimson, and deep indigo hung from golden wooden stalls, dancing in the warm breeze. The air was thick with the rich, mouth-watering scents of roasting meats, sweet honeyed pastries, and exotic spices like ginger, cloves, and rich cocoa. Upbeat, rhythmic music played from wooden drums and stringed instruments near the town square, where children laughed and danced freely.

As they walked down the stone pathway, Odesse could not help but stare in absolute admiration at the people surrounding her. The Hisponians possessed an undeniable, breathtaking beauty. Their skin, varying in magnificent shades of rich mahogany, deep bronze, and smooth, shiny copper—literally seemed to glow under the brilliant sun. The men moved with a striking, fluid grace, their bodies muscular, broad-shouldered, and powerfully built, while the women possessed voluptuous, beautifully endowed silhouettes, their elegant curves accentuated by vibrant, tightly tailored wrapped skirts.

"It is... it is paradise," Odesse whispered, her eyes wide as she watched a group of muscular warriors laughing together near a fruit stall, their dark skin gleaming with health.

"It is home," Ronan replied proudly, his broad chest swelling as he guided her through the crowd.

But as they moved deeper into the market, the bustling noise of the town began to soften. Heads began to turn. The townspeople, accustomed to seeing their own radiant, dark-skinned populace, caught sight of Odesse.

Whispers of wonder broke out among the vendors. A group of beautifully curved women standing by a textile stall paused their conversation, their grey eyes glistening with curiosity as they looked at Odesse’s exceptionally pale, porcelain skin and her long, striking silver hair that cascaded down her back like liquid starlight.

"Look at her skin," a woman with thick, beautiful black coils whispered to her friend, her voice filled with admiration. "It is like the pure, untouched moonlight. It is so unique, so delicate."

An older, broad-shouldered merchant with a heavily muscled chest bowed his head respectfully as they passed, smiling warmly. "Welcome to the Hispo region, young lady. May our sun bring warmth to your beautiful spirit."

Odesse felt her cheeks turn a soft pink at the unexpected compliments. In her home pack, her human traits and unique appearance had often made her the target of harsh whispers and cruelty. To be looked at with such genuine adoration and respect by a populace so structurally magnificent left her feeling deeply moved.

"They are so kind," Odesse murmured to Ronan, looking back at a group of children who were waving at her with wide, bright smiles. "And they are so beautiful, Ronan. The women... their figures are so elegant and powerful. The men look like gods carved from earth."

Ronan chuckled softly, his grey eyes crinkling. "We pride ourselves on strength, health, and unity, Odesse. A healthy soul reflects on the body."

They stopped in front of a massive, golden-trimmed jewelry and trinket stall that displayed rare, shimmering gems, polished wooden beads, and beautifully carved silver hairpins. Odesse’s eyes instantly locked onto a gorgeous, hand-carved wooden bracelet inlaid with shimmering, iridescent river shells that caught the light in shades of pink and blue.

She gently picked it up, her mind instantly flying across the miles back to the Moonlight Pack palace, straight to a quiet room smelling of herbs and medicine.

"Cara..." Odesse whispered, a bittersweet smile touching her lips as she traced the smooth wood. She looked up at Ronan, her eyes shimmering with affection. "Cara would absolutely love this. She always tries so hard to doll herself up, even when she feels invisible. This would look so beautiful against her skin."

Ronan smiled warmly, waving his hand toward the vendor. "Then we shall take it. In fact, pick out anything else that reminds you of your friend. My mother was right—we cannot let you return without our treasures."

Odesse smiled brightly, a deep, powerful sense of hope finally solidifying within her chest. Looking around at the wealthy, unified, and powerful people of the Hispo Pack, she realized she was not alone.
