Chapter 78: Close To You Again

Five days passed in a blur of meticulous preparation, and finally, the heavy royal carriage of the Hispo Pack stood ready within the palace courtyard. Its structure had been heavily reinforced with thick iron plating along the base to withstand the rocky northern terrain, its gold-accented wood gleaming even under the morning sun.

Odesse stood near the steps of the carriage, dressed in a sharp, elegant traveling gown. Two exceptionally tall Hisponian royal guards stood perfectly straight behind her, their muscular frames clad in polished leather armor, hands resting casually on the pommels of their broadswords.

Prince Ronan walked out to join her, his striking grey eyes carrying a hint of reluctance. "The journey is long and unpredictable, Odesse," he murmured, his broad shoulders shifting. "Let me ride out with you. My presence could ensure your safety through the outer wilderness."

Odesse turned to him, a sweet, deeply grateful smile breaking across her face. She gently placed a hand on his arm. "Thank you, Prince Ronan. Your kindness has been a sanctuary for me. But this is a storm I must face with my own strength. Your pack has already given me everything I need to survive. I cannot risk dragging you into the crosshairs of my kingdom’s betrayal."

Ronan searched her resolute gaze before letting out a soft sigh, bowing his head in respect. "May the spirits guide your path, Queen Odesse."

With a final nod, Odesse stepped into the carriage, her two towering guards scaling the rear platform as the driver cracked the reins.

The journey northward was anything but smooth. As the golden warmth of the Hispo region faded behind them, the sky grew heavy and oppressive, unleashing violent downpours that turned the dirt highways into thick, treacherous mires of mud. The carriage rattled violently against the howling winds of the storms, the horses straining against the elements. Yet, inside the dark cabin, Odesse sat in absolute silence, her hand tightly gripping the wolf-embossed wedding ring on her finger.

After a grueling week of traveling through the relentless elements, the air turned crisp and biting as they finally reached the main northern borders.

The carriage slowed to a halt before the massive iron gates of the frontier. The border guards, wrapped in thick northern furs, stepped forward to inspect the vehicle. As they peered through the rain, their eyes widened slightly, tracking the rich, dark skin and commanding statures of the two Hisponian warriors guarding the rear. The guards flicked their gazes toward Odesse’s pale features and striking silver hair inside the cabin. A heavy, quiet tension hung in the air and without a word, they raised their spears and stepped back, letting the vehicle pass into the northern territories.

By evening, the carriage rolled into the formidable gates of the Appex Pack, the sovereign territory where the High Chief held absolute dominion over the regional factions.

The carriage door opened, and Odesse stepped down onto the stone courtyard, the cool wind whipping her silver tresses around her shoulders. Her two tall guards stepped down immediately behind her, moving like synchronized shadows as they escorted her through the grand, towering archway of the palace.

They walked deep into the fortress, arriving at a secluded, heavily secured chamber. Seated upon a carved stone dais was the High Chief. His long, silver-white hair cascaded down his shoulders, contrasting sharply with the dark stone of his surroundings.

The High Chief looked up as the doors opened. The moment his gaze locked onto her form, his posture shifted.

"Odesse," his deep, echoing voice carried a wave of cold surprise through the quiet room. "What are you doing here?"

Odesse stepped forward smoothly, bowing her head with practiced, regal grace. "Greetings, High Chief."

The High Chief’s eyes flicked over her shoulder, pausing on the two formidable, dark-skinned Hisponian warriors standing tightly at her flank. He noted their foreign armor and imposing presence, but he chose not to ask about them, keeping his focus entirely on the missing queen. He gestured with a pale hand. "Speak. What has happened?"

Taking a steadying breath, Odesse laid out the entire truth. She spoke clearly and with absolute poise, recounting Azure’s sudden appearance, the dark witchcraft that had compromised Valex’s mind, and the web of lies currently holding the Moonlight Pack hostage.

As the tale unfolded, the High Chief listened in utter silence, his masked face unreadable, though the air in the room grew noticeably heavier. When she finished, he leaned back, slowly crossing one leg over the other under his white robes.

"An imposter on the throne, and an Alpha King enslaved by a synthetic bond," the High Chief murmured softly. He looked at Odesse closely. "Tell me, young queen... what is it you need me to do?"

Odesse met his gaze under the mask, her jaw setting firmly. "I need a way to return to the political circle of the Moonlight Pack, but it cannot look rushed or desperate. I need an opening where I can command the room without Azure being able to hide behind her walls."

A slow, knowing smirk creped beneath the High Chief’s mask. He leaned his chin against his hand, his eyes flashing with tactical amusement.

"Well," the High Chief reasoned smoothly, "there is a grand masquerade ball being hosted at the Bloodfang Pack in a few days’ time. It is an exclusive royal gathering, and I believe Valex will surely attend."

Odesse’s eyes brightened, a brilliant, calculating smile settling onto her lips as the perfect strategy fell into place. "A masquerade ball," she thought to herself.

...

The memory faded, dissolving back into the cool, star-lit night air of the Bloodfang fortress. Standing out on the secluded open-air corridor, Odesse looked up at the glowing crescent moon, a brilliant, unyielding smile gracing her lips. Kael stood a respectful distance behind her, watching the quiet strength radiating from her silhouette.

Odesse turned her head slightly to face him, her silver mask catching the moonlight. "And now I’m here," she said softly, her voice carrying an unshakable weight. "I’m here to make things right."

Kael looked at her, a wave of profound respect washing over him. "Wow," he thought to himself, his chest tightening with admiration. "She really went through an unimaginable amount of trauma. Some queens would have broken completely or given up entirely, but she did not. She returned stronger."

Odesse sighed softly, her expression turning analytical. "But to finish this, I need a way to get back into the Moonlight palace. I need a reason to stay there permanently where Azure cannot easily cast me out."

Kael stepped a half-pace closer, his tone disciplined but eager. "Why don’t you come to the palace still as his wife, Your Highness?"

Odesse blinked behind her silver mask, tilting her head. "Huh... what do you mean, Kael?"

"Well," Kael explained, his voice low and calculating. "If you try to re-enter his life under a false identity or lie to him about who you are, His Highness will naturally distance himself from you because of the rigid loyalty he believes he owes to Azure as his present wife. But... if you march directly into the capital as Odesse, his true wife... Azure’s illusion will crack. The maids, the guards, and every worker in the palace who loved you will be able to testify to your identity. And not just that..."

Odesse’s eyes brightened as she caught onto his strategy, a brilliant smile breaking across her face. "It will make Valex violently question everything Azure told him about my death."

Kael offered an agreeing smile, nodding firmly. "Yes, Your Highness. He won’t be able to ignore the physical proof of an entire kingdom recognizing you."

Odesse turned back toward the vast sky, looking straight at the shining moon. "And this way, I shall have far more freedom to be near His Highness," she murmured. She looked down at her hand, gently touching the cold metal of her wedding ring as her smile widened. "I have much more proof than Azure has time left. She cannot sustain a lie against an entire kingdom." A sharp, confident smirk played on her lips. "I can’t wait to be close to you again, my king." A soft, light crimson blush touched her cheeks, her heart hammering with a mixture of excitement and fierce anticipation.

...

The silent night washed over the fortress as the grand Royal Masquerade Ball finally began to draw to a close. Down in the courtyard, the heavy doors of the royal carriage were opened. Valex and Azure walked side-by-side into the vehicle, the dark atmosphere clinging to them. Kael stood straight and composed by the carriage door, keeping his guard posture flawless. Before stepping inside, Kael scanned the upper perimeter of the courtyard. High up on the stone balcony, he spotted Odesse standing in her white gown, watching them. Kael gave her a subtle, reassuring nod with a slight smile. Odesse waved back gently, slipping into the shadows as Kael turned and entered the carriage, closing the heavy door behind him.

The interior of the carriage was thick with a suffocating, heavy silence as it began to roll away from the Bloodfang territory. Azure sat rigidly beside Valex, her face twisted in a motion of visible distress and deep panic. Her fingers trembled as she repeatedly tightened and crumpled the fabric of her emerald-green dress in her lap, her mind racing with terror over the silver-haired specter she had seen on the dance floor.

Valex sat on the opposite side of the seat, completely detached from her presence. His face was filled with a profound, tensed wonder as his mind spun in chaotic circles. "That woman tonight..." he thought, his chest aching with a terrifyingly powerful longing. "She had a familiar scent. A very, very familiar scent."

Subconsciously seeking space, Valex shifted his body slightly further away from Azure, moving closer to the window.

Azure’s eyes snapped up, a look of pure, shocked horror crossing her features at his sudden physical rejection. Kael, sitting across from them, noticed the subtle shift immediately, a small, satisfied smirk touching his lips in the dark.

Valex locked his eyes on the passing dark scenery outside the window, his internal monologue reaching a fever pitch. "I could not concentrate on anything tonight. Every king and alpha who approached me sounded like background noise... because my eyes were desperately searching the crowd for her. Why am I acting like this? Why do I search for another woman when I am supposed to have a wife I love?" He briefly glanced back at Azure, whose head was now lowered in bitter frustration, before looking away again. His face saddens as he stared back out into the night. "My heart... it doesn’t beat for Azure. It has never beat for her as much as it violently hammered for whomever that masked woman was. She had the exact same silver hair as the woman who haunts my blurry memories. Who is she? I truly wish to be close to you again..."

He closed his eyes heavily, and like an echo through his soul, her voice reverberated perfectly in his mind: "Hopefully fate lets me see you again."

Valex opened his eyes slowly, his breathing tight as a quiet, frustrated murmur escaped his lips. "She left... without even telling me her name."

Unable to control the overwhelming weight in his chest, Valex covered his face with his large hands, exhaling a ragged, exhausted breath. Watching his sudden breakdown from the corner of her eye, Azure’s heart dropped into her stomach, a cold dread washing over her as a frantic thought solidified in her mind "Something is very, very wrong."
