Chapter 57: Preparation Is a Weapon

[Calyra’s POV]

"Are you certain you’re simply going to let him leave just like that? Without pressing him about what he meant?" Silvena asked.

Calyra, still caught within her thoughts, gave a slight shake of her head.

Of course, she was curious, perhaps excessively so, more than she should have been. But beneath that inquisitiveness lay something stronger and far less yielding.

Distrust.

Why should she place faith in someone who had just told her to abandon the search for her master she had pursued for years?

The more she considered it, the less sense it made, since there was no proper explanation behind his knowledge.

"There is no need," she said evenly. "I do not think he is trustworthy. Sorry. You did say he possessed some manner of foresight, did you not? I did not mean to imply that I doubted your judgment, Silvena."

"No, no. It’s fine," Silvena replied lightly. "It’s not as though I trust him blindly either. My instincts say I can rely on what he says... but instincts aren’t enough proof. Even lies can carry fragments of truth. And yes, sometimes, truth can also disguises itself as a lie."

"...Yes. That is true."

Yet it was not merely his credibility that occupied Calyra’s mind.

What unsettled her more was his final remark.

What did he mean by that? Who had he been referring to? What promise? Had she ever made such a promise before?

Subconsciously, Calyra lightly tapped her butterfly hairpin, as if the small action helped calm her down.

If she had... she would remember it. Calyra was not someone who forgot a promise. That, at least, she knew with absolute certainty.

"But then again, what would he possibly gain from telling us such a lie?" Silvena mused aloud, almost teasing.

Calyra considered the question in silence, letting it settle fully in her thoughts before responding.

"His name..." Calyra asked.

"What is his name again?" (+20PP)

Silvena turned to look at the door where the young man had left.

"Ruvian Castelor."

Ruvian finally made his way back to his room.

It was regrettable that he had been forced to return the book so soon, though there had been little he could do about it.

He supposed he could have attempted to bargain with Calyra for a few additional days, but he doubted it would have yielded any results.

She had been unmistakably resolute about reclaiming it, as though it were some irreplaceable treasure.

But more than that, after seeing the sheer enormity of her monstrous Runeheart’s attributes, who in their right mind would willingly try to bargain against such a terror?

Certainly not him. There existed nothing in this world, nor anything beyond it, that could possibly convince him to stand on the wrong side of Calyra.

Even burdened by the curse that kept her Mana Essence eternally severed to a mere quarter—5,000 out of 20,000—that figure alone was already enough to eclipse most scholars entirely.

And without that curse?

She would be far more than merely lethal.

’And regarding her master...’

The thought surfaced again in his head.

The reason Ruvian had told her not to search for that person, at least not yet, was because no matter how desperately she tried, she would not find her.

Not now.

As someone who had read the novel, he knew the truth.

At this point in the timeline, that individual existed somewhere far beyond Calyra’s reach.

Of course, he doubted his warning would stop her. He was, after all, nothing more than a stranger offering neither proof nor explanation.

Furthermore, in Calyra’s case, Ruvian had a separate plan in mind. It would be far better for her to rid herself of that curse first.

For now, however, that matter would have to wait; at this stage, he had yet to find any viable way to accomplish such a thing.

At the very least, he needed to ensure that he himself became strong and capable enough to accompany her on the journey to break it.

What demanded his attention more urgently was the trial scheduled in two days, at the end of this orientation week.

Fortunately, so far, his preparations have gone rather well.

Even though he had been forced to return the book earlier than expected, he had still managed to grasp the fundamental principle behind expanding his mana reservoir.

He had not yet studied the remaining sections, but this alone was already more than sufficient for the present.

Perhaps, it was already plenty for an extra like him.

Ruvian inspected his Mana Essence.

[Mana Essence: 200/200]

Finally, he had managed to reach the threshold of 200 before the trials—a result that could, by any reasonable measure, be called satisfactory progress.

Ruvian resolved to make full use of the remaining days through further training. But more importantly, today’s encounter had impressed upon him a lesson of unmistakable value: 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

He needed to revisit the contents of the novel again and again using [Omniscient Review], engraving every detail into his mind until not even the smallest fragment could escape his memory.

He could no longer afford to hoard his Plot Points for some uncertain future anymore.

It would be far wiser to spend them now, sharpening his understanding of this world while the opportunity still lies within reach.

Knowledge, when one considered it properly, was not a luxury to be gathered at leisure, but a weapon that had to be sharpened before it was ever needed.

And Ruvian, more than most, could not afford to face what was coming with a dull blade in hand.

"I guess you could say that for tonight... it’s time to reread the 1,602 Chapters again."

Ruvian simply smiled at his notion.

This time, however, he resolved that his preparations would not merely surpass his previous efforts...

No, they would eclipse them entirely, refined to a degree that would permit no flaw, no oversight, and no margin for chance to interfere.

Taking his seat at his desk, Ruvian activated his skill and began to dive deeper inside the novel.
