Chapter 58: Trials of Confrontation (1)

The following day arrived.

Ruvian and the other members of his circle found themselves gathered for Airin’s briefing.

This time, however, they were not at their usual training grounds. Instead, they sat inside a small room equipped with a projector and a manaboard, the atmosphere quieter and more formal than usual.

"Before we begin, I hope all of you brought your insignia and the small booklet you received during registration." Airin said.

Immediately, one by one, they raised their hands holding the academy insignia and booklet as instructed.

"Very good. So, for today, I’ll be briefing you on your scholar profiles. All you need to do is place your insignia on top of your booklet, channel a bit of mana into it, and observe what appears."

Ruvian and the others followed her instructions. A moment later, the small booklet in their hands began to glow with a bright golden light.

"Oh wow... it’s glowing," Griffer murmured.

"That’s right, now, open it to the last page of your booklet... and this is what you should see," Airin said, gesturing as she projected an example onto the manaboard.

Ruvian flipped to the final page.

This was what greeted him:

Even without the need of briefings from Airin, Ruvian was completely aware of what this thing was—It was the academy official Scholar’s Profile.

Of course he did.

Something this fundamental wasn’t the sort of thing he’d overlook.

This was the record system that documented scholar’s progress, ability and their standing within the academy.

The scholar’s profile also updated dynamically every week as the scholar advanced, reflecting achievements, rankings, and performance metrics in real time.

In essence, it functioned as both a school record and a personal file, so instructors and scholars alike could monitor their growth, performance, and if one were so inclined, admire just how well they were doing.

Airin clapped her hands, drawing her scholars’ attention away from their booklets.

"Alright, as you’ve likely inferred from the contents displayed, the Scholar Profile functions exactly as described, so I won’t dwell on its basic mechanics."

"What does matter, and what I’m particularly excited to discuss, is how this system will begin recording your development starting tomorrow’s trial."

She brightly smiled with enthusiasm.

"Because that trial will generate your very first Trial Record points."

"Now, regarding your first year overall evaluation... It’s not like there’s a fixed score that decides whether you pass or fail your first year. So, you don’t have to worry too much about that."

"The academy looks at each batch as a whole—your overall results, how you compare to others, and how difficult the year was. So in the end, they judge you through a full review, not just by numbers alone."

"That said, optimization is always advisable. You should aim to accumulate as many points as possible. Historical data indicates that surpassing 2,500 points in your SPR, your Scholar Performance Record, would place a scholar well within the safest percentile range by year’s end."

Deliberately, Airin lifted a finger.

"However, do not mistake that correlation for certainty. 2,500 points is not a guarantee. It is a statistical comfort zone. Your objective, therefore, is to maximize measurable growth, and maintain a consistent performance."

"Understand?"

Ruvian and the rest quietly nodded.

Airin let the silence linger just long enough for anticipation to build. Then, slowly, she gave them all a knowing smile.

"Well then, since all of you look so attentive today... I suppose I can offer a small hint about tomorrow’s trial."

Several heads lifted and geared forward at once.

Only Ruvian was calm, simply unbothered by the news.

"As I previously said, you’ll be facing your clone. And that clone of yours will possess your abilities, your habits, and your tendencies..." she continued, pacing leisurely before them.

"But," she added cheerfully, "they will also have one thing that you crucially currently lack."

Noelle blinked. "Currently lack...?"

Airin nodded her head, then considered whether she should elaborate or not.

"Mm. Let’s just say the academy believes growth is most efficient when scholars are confronted not only with their strengths... but with a very precise reflection of their shortcomings."

Her smile sharpened, bright and encouraging.

"So tomorrow, you won’t simply be tested on how strong you are."

She raised a finger. "You’ll be tested on whether you truly understand yourself."

"After all," she said pleasantly, "what better opponent is there... than a version of you who has already overcome what you haven’t?"

The next day came.

Finally, it was the day for the Trials of Confrontation.

Ruvian inspected his [Runeheart].

His progress had been slow, painfully slow, but it was still leagues better than the growth rate of any nameless extra.

Was there anyone else among the background nobodies improving faster than him?

Certainly not!

Ruvian smiled to himself, deeply satisfied.

In the three weeks since arriving in this world, he had already pushed every one of his stats up by a full rank—except for mental strength.

His strength, once an F, had risen to F+.

The same went for his agility.

Ruvian calmly walked into the hall where the Polaris Circle would be evaluated for the Trials of Confrontation.

For the past two days, he had been diligently analyzing himself, dissecting his weaknesses, identifying what he lacked most, and mapping out every flaw he could find.

Ruvian wanted to see whether he could truly overcome the challenge placed before him.

He didn’t count the incident with the High Demon as a real test.

After all, he hadn’t defeated it by himself, he had merely created the opening for Irene to deliver the killing blow.

That wasn’t proof of his limits.

Even the fight against the four thugs hadn’t pushed him that far.

And honestly speaking, in his previous life, he’d experienced far more dangerous, genuine life-and-death confrontations than that.

This trial, however...

This might finally qualify for one.

As he stepped into the hall, the other four members were already present, waiting beside Airin near the elevated marble platform.
