Chapter 1193: Saving People

It’s easy to kill zombies. They are brainless. And everyone other than me are mages. So they can kill the zombies from distance without having to worry about getting bitten by the zombies.

Well, even I can fight from distance. So it was easy to kill the zombies.

Unfortunately, although zombies are weak against light magic to the point that light mages who turned into zombies can no longer use light magic, there’s no way to restore the zombies back into humans. That is impossible.

Well, it’s actually possible. It’s just that one of the conditions for someone to be a zombie is death. So even if you turn a zombie back into a human, they will still die. So killing them is the easiest way to get rid of them.

Thanks to Angela and all the other earth mages in this place, this country is safe from zombies. Those zombies need to climb the wall so they can reach this place.

Of course wind mages who turned into zombies can still fly over the wall. But they will be killed before they can do anything to us.

Still, there are too many of those zombies. It’s as if the rest of the people in this continent are turned into zombies.

I need to save as many people as possible.

"Angela, I’ll be going to the fishing village and rescue those people. They should be safe if I brought them to the island where we built the base. You stay here and protect the country," I said to Angela.

"Okay. Be careful! You’re the only one who fights in close range!" Angela said.

She’s worried about me. That’s normal since she knows me best as someone who fights in close range. Even if she knows that I can fight from distance.

I opened a portal and leave everything here for Angela and the others to take care. It’s time to save the people in the fishing village.

Thankfully, the zombies can’t swim. Maybe water mages who turned into zombies can swim. But not these zombies.

So while some villagers who can fight stay on the shore, the others who can’t fight are on several boats floating in the sea.

"Get to the boats! I’ll take care of the zombies!" I said to the villagers.

The villagers noticed me and they jumped into the water without looking back. They have so much trust in me.

In just a few seconds, hundreds of zombies were killed by me. And the village is now... covered with zombies. I’ll get a fire mage to burn the corpses later.

The boats returned to the shore and I approached them.

"What happened?" the Village Chief asked.

"Seems like the cult finally can’t hold back anymore and the Death Mage is using her magic to create zombies that attack everyone. I’ll take you to the island where our base is. It should be impossible for the zombies to get there. That place should be safer than any other place in this continent," I said.

"Okay. We’ll go there. What about the village?" the Village Chief asked.

I looked back at the village’s condition before turning my attention back to the Village Chief.

"Do you think this village is safe for you to stay in?" I asked.

"...Can we get some of our stuffs before leaving?"

So I waited for the villagers to get ready before moving them to the base. In there, I told them everything about the zombies that I know.

"How about this island? Is there anything I should worry about?" I asked the soldier in charge of this island.

"So far, there were no zombies at all. But we have increased the security around the island and even above the island. Unless they can somehow teleport here, it’s impossible for them to come without us noticing," the soldier said.

"Good. I think we have built several other bases in this continent. I’ll go there and grab everyone here," I said.

So I move from base to base and put everyone in the island. Everyone who is alive and can’t fight well. For those who can fight, I brought them to the country in the west.

What’s the name of the country again? I forgot.

Whatever. I don’t care.

"Good job, Roy. Now, you should go to all cities and villages that you can find and save as many people as possible."

That’s what Sunglasses told me when he called me and asked what I’m doing. So now I need to save more people.

"Why do I need to do that?" I asked.

It’s a bother to do something like that.

"First, I don’t want innocent civilians to die and used as pawns. Second, those people you saved will more likely to be hostile toward the cult. They might be the people who put their faith in the cult right now. But after learning that the zombies happened because of the cult, their resentment toward the cult will be at its peak instantly. It means more allies for us. Just do it. We still don’t know where the source of this zombies outbreak from," Sunglasses said on the phone.

Well, now it seems like I will be a hero. That’s also what Sunglasses and the Kings are planning for me.

Doesn’t matter. He’s right. We don’t know where the Death Mage is at the moment. So saving people is more important.

But what if someone I saved was actually the Death Mage?

I asked my concern to Sunglasses and he gave an answer readily.

"We already consider that. So when you save people next time, just bring them to one of the island that you discovered between both continents. The one that is large enough to hold several cities. There, if the Death Mage tries to do anything, they can’t leave the island anyway. You know that there are several small islands surrounding that island, right? We have placed several wind mages and water mages there so if there’s anyone who can actually leave the island, we will capture them," Sunglasses said.

Now I remember. There is one rather big island surrounded by smaller islands on our way to this continent back then. Then Claudia suggested for me to bring some people there a few times. I never bothered asking them what they were doing so I don’t know that they’re actually making a shelter for refugees.

...Or maybe a prison.

There are already quite a number of scouts investigating around this continent. I can just open a portal to their location. Although I’m sure they haven’t found all the cities and villages, they should have covered a lot of areas.

So I checked those places one by one. There are a lot of survivors it seems. I’m glad. But it means that I will have to work so hard. What a pain. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

I hope the Death Mage won’t be among them. Or at least I hope that I can recognize the Death Mage right away.

Oh, right! There’s someone who might have met the Death Mage before. Sonia!

So after transporting several people, I called Sonia to my place.

"What is it, Roy?" the ghost asked.

"If you see the Death Mage again, will you be able to recognize her?" I asked.

"I think so. Oh, you want me to join you finding survivors and see if the Death Mage is among them. I’ll do it," Sonia said.

"Right. And the Death Mage might be a tamer, right? Then she might be surrounded by monsters. Since she’s a tamer from the cult, she must have a lot of powerful monsters. Let’s see if there’s anyone who is save because they are being protected by monsters," I said.

"That’s possible. Thanks to Lina, I didn’t become the Death Mage’s familiar. Let’s look for her," Sonia said.

Though we ended up couldn’t find the Death Mage at all. But we still saved a lot of people.

In the island, those refugees were taught that the zombies were caused by the cult. They were told that everything they were taught were lies. And the cult only wants destruction of the world.

Many were in despair after hearing that. But it’s great. Because it means that they don’t actually follow the faith of the cult.

And the rest who were not in despair were actually never truly believed in the cult. So everyone we saved now realized that the cult is their enemy.

I keep saving people. And after all the places that our scouts have discovered were saved, I look for other cities on my own.

And from the eastern side of the continent, I heard that there were no zombie attacks at all. The eastern side of the continent is completely safe from the zombies.

Which means that it’s highly likely that the Death Mage is over there. The Death Mage who has reached the stage beyond master level.

If she’s there, then there’s a chance that the Evil God will be there. I need to investigate that place. But there are still many things to do so I will delay my search for a while.

At least until the zombies won’t be a trouble for us anymore.
