Chapter 1095: Might Be Among Us

In the hall, Ulsin had already checked every corpse’s memories. He could not find any clues. All of them had been killed before they even saw the killer.

"It’s useless. I did not see anything that could lead us to the killer other than the dagger created entirely from energy used to kill them," Ulsin said.

Zeskia nodded. "That clue alone is enough to support our earlier guess that the killer wanted to be detected. Using a dagger created entirely from energy is the same as leaving a trace behind."

Kurtis nodded. "Well, it cannot be helped then. We should use this one-time tracing talisman. Luckily, I brought one with me. It has never failed to track anyone through residual energy." He took out a talisman paper.

"Why did you not say earlier that you brought a tracing talisman? I did not have to do all of that," Ulsin said with exasperation.

Kurtis shrugged. "This is only a last resort. As you know, my tracing talismans are difficult to create. It would be much better if we could solve this case without using one."

Ulsin clicked his tongue.

Kurtis then placed the talisman on the wound of one corpse where he sensed the residual energy.

A moment later, the talisman lit up. The paper suddenly transformed into three small birds.

Under the watch of the three immortals, the birds flew in circles above the corpse.

Kurtis frowned as he watched their behavior. He waited for them to fly away, yet even after several seconds, the birds continued circling above the body.

They kept flying like that for more than ten seconds before suddenly disappearing.

The three immortals were shocked.

"Your tracing talisman failed?" Ulsin asked in astonishment.

"How is this possible?! My tracing talisman tracks energy based on karma and—wait..." Kurtis said in shock before he realized something.

"Don’t tell me the assassin brought an artifact that can prevent karmic tracing? With such an artifact, they would be untraceable by any technique or tracing method that relies on karma laws . Even someone using a vision technique like a diviner would not be able to find them."

Zeskia frowned when she heard that. That was not good for their investigation.

If that was the case, then their options for finding the assassin would become limited. They would have to search using more ordinary methods, which might take more time.

"It cannot be helped then. We will search using other means. I doubt they can keep hiding. We already know they used the energy of God Arvegis’ followers, and with our sharper senses we might detect them. Our real cultivation might be sealed, but our senses are not affected as much," Zeskia said.

Kurtis and Ulsin nodded.

After discussing how they would catch the assassin for a while, they finally left the building. They spread out toward various parts of the city. They also ordered the pseudo immortal cultivators who served as their escorts to assist with the search.

Aldrian, who was still sitting on top of the building, observed them for a while before focusing his gaze on Ulsin. His body disappeared as he teleported away.

Zeskia brought the temporary leader of the city and asked him to gather all the devils in the city. It did not take long before all the devils assembled in the city plaza.

Zeskia looked over the gathered crowd.

"Is this all the devils here?" Zeskia asked the man behind her.

"Wait. Let me confirm one more time, my lady," the man replied before shouting toward the thousands of devils.

"Check if anyone is missing around you! See if someone has disappeared from the ranks!"

The devils looked around at their surroundings. After a few moments, one of them shouted toward the man.

"Captain Eric has not arrived yet, sir."

Hearing that, the man frowned. "Eric?"

Zeskia, noticing that someone seemed to be missing, approached the devil who had just spoken.

"Where was the last time you saw this Eric?" she asked after arriving in front of him.

This devil cultivator, who cultivated lust energy, lowered his head to restrain himself. Zeskia’s beautiful face truly tempted him, but he did not dare show any reaction.

He knew he might lose his life if he failed to control himself here.

"The last time I saw him was not long ago in the greeting line to welcome Your Excellency’s arrival. But I did not see him anymore after Your Excellency’s group entered the city hall," he answered.

Zeskia felt that something was wrong. Her eyes narrowed before suddenly widening.

’Wait... don’t tell me the assassin has already taken another action, or maybe...’

Her expression turned solemn. She then looked at the devils surrounding her.

"I order all of you to search for Eric!" she commanded.

The order stunned them for a moment, but not for long. A second later, they had already spread across the city.

Not long after they scattered, a panicked shout rang out.

"Over here! Over here! I found a corpse!"

Zeskia immediately dashed toward the source of the voice where she heard it. When she was about to arrive, many devils had already gathered there. They stood at a distance while staring in the same direction.

A bad feeling suddenly rose in Zeskia’s heart. A second later, she finally arrived and saw what they were looking at.

The moment her gaze fell on the scene, her eyes trembled. She immediately approached the body lying on the ground in the narrow desert alley. A pool of blood had already drenched the ground beneath the corpse, and a large wound could be seen on the neck.

Zeskia looked at Ulsin, who now lay motionless without any sign of life. His eyes were wide open as if he had been shocked by the sudden arrival of death. From the condition of his body, it seemed he had died without resistance.

"Ulsin?" Kurtis’s voice came from behind her.

Kurtis had also rushed over after hearing the shout, but he did not expect to see such a sight.

Less than thirty minutes ago, he had been speaking with Ulsin. Now that same person lay lifeless before him.

Both he and Zeskia could sense the same remnant energy as the other assassination victims. They knew it had been caused by the same person, or the same group.

Kurtis gritted his teeth as fury rose in his heart.

"This assassin is mocking us! They must have been observing our movements somewhere. Perhaps they are even watching us right now," he said while looking around.

Zeskia also felt anger rising within her. However, she quickly calmed herself before speaking.

"It seems this assassin can disguise themselves as one of us."

Kurtis frowned. "What? How is that possible? Even if they could disguise themselves as one of us, what about the devil energy? How could they replicate that? It’s not like they have something like our trick to infiltrate other powers in the First Heaven, right?"

"Did you forget what we already suspect?" Zeskia said. "If they are followers of God Arvegis, then they might possess knowledge from the higher heavens. They could have methods that allow them to disguise themselves as one of us completely."

"With them daring to act at this moment, that means they have already abandoned their old disguise. They disguised themselves as one of the captains, but now they must be hiding. If not, they may already be using another disguise."

She then looked at the devils watching from a distance.

"They might be among us right now."

Kurtis took a deep breath. "You are right, miss. But..." He also looked at the others.

"What should we do to flush them out? If they decide to hide or even escape from the city, there is nothing we can do. Searching for them under normal circumstances is already difficult. If they escape somewhere, it will be even worse."

"For now, let’s confirm whether they are among us or not. I have a feeling they have not escaped from the city yet," Zeskia said.

After that, Zeskia ordered the devils to return to the city plaza. Once everyone had gathered, she ordered them to sit in a meditation position.

"I want all of you to circulate your cultivation technique. Cultivate normally," she commanded.

She then looked at the cultivators who had escorted their group.

"You too."

They were stunned for a moment, but they still obeyed and began cultivating.

Zeskia then turned to Kurtis.

"You too, Kurtis."

Kurtis was stunned for a moment before releasing a sigh. He felt offended that he was also included among those under suspicion.

However, he still nodded and obeyed her. He did not want to create unnecessary problems with her.

He sat down in a meditation position and began cultivating normally.

Zeskia observed all the devils. She tried to see if anyone looked awkward or even failed to cultivate at all.

Although the assassin could disguise themselves as one of them, she doubted they could cultivate the cultivation technique of Tarius’s followers. They might be able to disguise their appearance and even their devil energy, but a cultivation technique was something that had to be comprehended.

If she used this method, then if the assassin was still among them, she would notice when she saw someone who could not cultivate.

Zeskia continued observing the devils, but after several minutes she did not find anything strange among them. She frowned.

’I did not sense any abnormality among them. Did the assassin choose to hide instead?’ she thought.

However, unbeknownst to her, Aldrian stood not far away while using his concealment technique.
