Chapter 53: Chapter 38 The Story

"It is indeed amusing that someone has come to seek assistance from this king," the Well Dragon King said with a smile.

However, he quickly realized something was amiss and grabbed Prime Minister Turtle, asking, "Say that again, he’s from outside?"

"Wasn’t it your task to guard the well? How did he get in?"

"Your Majesty, your servant has no idea. The well wasn’t opened, I’m as clueless as you are about how this fellow got in."

While the two were discussing, Lin Fang strolled in casually, looking around the Crystal Palace with keen interest.

It must be said, worthy of the Dragon Clan, the Crystal Palace definitely qualified as resplendent and magnificent–everywhere one looked, there were blood-red corals, like trees, and Luminous Pearls hung every few steps, hence the Palace was bright and clear.

Huge pearls formed into bead curtains, and oversized colorful seashells served as decorations; even to Lin Fang, a traveler from another time, this place seemed exceedingly wealthy.

The two who were in discussion looked up and saw Lin Fang wandering around; his demeanor was as if he was visiting his own home, utterly relaxed and at ease.

The Well Dragon King cleared his throat gently to attract Lin Fang’s attention before speaking, "Who are you, and what brings you to my Dragon Palace?"

As he spoke, he quietly exerted his authority as a True Dragon, hoping to intimidate Lin Fang.

But his oppressive aura fell upon Lin Fang and disappeared as if it had plunged into a deep, bottomless dry well, without a trace. Lin Fang seemed like a black hole, continuously absorbing his pressure.

"I am but a Loose Cultivator. As for my name, it’s hardly worth mentioning, hardly worth mentioning," Lin Fang waved his hand nonchalantly.

"As for my business here, hasn’t Prime Minister Turtle told you? I’ve been a bit short on funds recently and heard that the Dragon King is rich in treasures, so here I am, seeking help," Lin Fang said with a smile.

"That is easily done. I will have someone fill a bag with pearls for you to take back to the Mortal World–enough to make you rich for a lifetime," the Well Dragon King detected Lin Fang’s challenging nature and offered it up, attempting to send him away with worldly wealth.

"Old Dragon King, are you trying to play me for a fool? We who practice cultivation, what use do we have for your pearls? Hurry up and bring out the good stuff, or I might as well find this Crystal Palace to my liking and stay for a couple of days," Lin Fang said deliberately in a clipped tone.

"Celestial one, you don’t understand. My reign as Dragon King is pitiful indeed. Confined in this little well and unable to move, I have no treasures to offer you. Those rumors of the Dragon King’s treasures are about those other Dragon Kings of rivers and seas, whereas someone like me can barely make ends meet,"

The Well Dragon King began to lament, hoping to dissuade Lin Fang’s intentions.

"That’s not my concern. If you don’t produce something that satisfies me today, I’m not leaving. Just make sure to feed me."

Seeing this, the Well Dragon King wanted to take action against Lin Fang but ultimately held back, as Lin Fang’s strength remained an enigma to him.

He turned his head and noticed Prime Minister Turtle giving him a meaningful look; they moved aside, and Prime Minister Turtle said, "Might Your Majesty be forgetting about that stone?"

"Are you talking about the one that severed the rivers?" the Well Dragon King suddenly remembered and asked.

"That’s right, the very one. After all, it’s of no use to us in the Dragon Palace, better to give it to this bandit. When the day comes for you to break free of your fetters, you can settle the score with him properly."

After hearing Prime Minister Turtle’s words, the Well Dragon King’s eyes lit up, and he hurried back to Lin Fang’s side, saying, "Immortal, my Dragon Palace is truly impoverished. If we speak of treasures, there genuinely is one, though I’m not sure if it will meet your liking."

Lin Fang’s spirits lifted upon hearing this. He had only been bluffing in the hope of a windfall and had not expected a real gain. Thus, he said with a smile, "I knew the Old Dragon King wouldn’t let me leave empty-handed."

Following the Well Dragon King, it wasn’t long before they saw a green stone that was neither too large nor too small. The Old Dragon King pointed to the stone and said, "This is that treasure."

"Are you playing a trick on me, Old Dragon King? This is clearly just an ordinary stone."

"You don’t know, Immortal, this is no ordinary stone."

Thus the Well Dragon King began to tell Lin Fang the story of the stone.

"Long ago, before the Wuji Kingdom was established, a mother and son lived in this place, struggling to survive, begging day by day for a living. The mother, being old, could not travel far, so each time it was the son who would go out, while the mother sat waiting for her child’s return on a piece of green stone by the doorway."

"Day and night, and who knows how much time passed, the mother eventually couldn’t hold on any longer and departed from this world. The young man buried his own mother, and, seeing the green stone at the door, became overwhelmed with emotion, his tears flowing ceaselessly. So, he threw the green stone into the nearby river as a way to remove it from his sight and thus ease his heart."

"Who would have thought, once the green stone fell in, the river was actually severed into two parts, and this disturbance alarmed the Dragon King in the river who came to investigate. When he saw it was this green stone, he reached out to retrieve it, but found that the stone seemed to have the weight of ten thousand catties, so heavy that not even the Dragon King could lift it."

"Left with no choice, the Dragon King had to ask the young man for help, promising he could fulfill any wish. The young man, having no other desires and being poor, could not afford a wife, so he expressed his wish for a bride."

"The Dragon King then married his daughter to the young man and also gifted him gold and silver, allowing the young man to take away the green stone. From then on, the young man lived a happy life."

"And then what happened? How did this thing end up in your hands?" Lin Fang was very curious how the story ended.

"After the young man became prosperous, he quickly became the focus of everyone’s attention, especially his Dragon Maiden wife, who was dignified, beautiful, and enchanting. Anyone who saw her was smitten."

"Soon, the King heard of this news and had the young man’s family captured and brought before him, saying, ’I want you to find something extraordinary. If you fail, I will have your head.’

"Left with no choice, the young man once again threw the stone into the river. After the Dragon King heard of it, he gave the young man a small bottle, instructing him, ’This is the extraordinary thing the Mortal Emperor demands. Give it to him, then stay with your wife and tell him he must not open it under any circumstances.’

"As soon as the young man handed over the bottle, the King, unwilling to heed his advice, opened it before everyone. Just then, a countless amount of water gushed from the bottle, instantly submerging the entire realm; the King and all his ministers drowned, the only ones saved being the young man and his Dragon Maiden wife. Ever since, the realm perished, leading to the later establishment of the Wuji Kingdom."

"After this incident, the young man became fully awakened, took his wife to live in seclusion in the mountains and engaged in the practice of cultivation. Before they left, he gifted the green stone to the Dragon King, and eventually it was passed down to my hands."

The Dragon King recounted the origin and history of the green stone in detail.

"The story might be ancient, but it is true. It’s just that after falling into my hands, the stone has never shown any magical properties, and its ability to Sever River has disappeared. With your vast Divine Skills, perhaps you can discover something miraculous about this item."
