Chapter 28: A Croissant

Jake pondered for a while before agreeing with Ray’s statement.

Indeed, if it were just these few groups of people, Jake wouldn’t mind killing them all.

However, if more were to show up, then things would become problematic.

To cast a sleeping magic on these could effectively halt their advances while giving them ample time to understand the situation. This would be the ideal solution to the sudden event.

Due to his quick judgment, the others also began to realize Ray wasn’t so simple. His mindset and adaptability were fairly high, which proved that his bold behavior in the household was somewhat planned.

"Chloe, you’ve experienced wartime with refugees before. Do you have any input regarding these refugees?" Ray turned to her and inquired.

Since he had an expert in the carriage, he might as well use it.

Why should he do all the work?

"We should send a few soldiers who are more agile to investigate the situation ahead. As for the refugees, we should awaken the person who spoke earlier that incited the crowd." Chloe responded.

"We should also bring out some food to feed their belly, otherwise, they wouldn’t be cooperative."

"Share our food with these peasants?" Jake raised an eyebrow and found it to be quite wasteful. The food they had in storage was all high-quality. It was meant for them only.

"Looks like Jake’s enthusiasm to share food is very high." Ray suddenly exclaimed and turned to the guard with a sweet smile. "Take out Jake’s portion of food to be ready to share with these refugees."

The soldiers were startled by the command. They hesitated and were unsure of whether to follow through.

"The Lord made me the highest commander, so unless you want your head to roll on the ground. It’s better to listen to me." Ray’s smile gradually turned dark and vicious.

The soldiers shivered slightly from the wicked smile. They hurriedly nodded and got to work.

"Are you guys serious?" Jake was dumbfounded to see the soldiers actually operating on Ray’s command.

That was his portion!

What was he supposed to eat late at night then?

"Jake, you want food? Go and hunt them yourself!" Right at this moment, Ray wrapped his arm around his shoulder and snickered.

"You!" Jake was irritated. He wanted to fling his arm away, but dared not.

Just the fact that his other siblings stood silent, especially his sister from the same mother, who chose to stay quiet, showed that he had no chance.

Even the soldiers learned that Ray was the one in charge of this journey after that bout.

After all, even Chloe showed zero disagreement and even answered his question.

Who was Chloe?

This was the woman who caused fear on the battlefield!

Men trembled in their knees when they saw her in battle, and women screeched in admiration if they witnessed her in a war uniform.

Sometime later, one of the refugees was awakened from the sleeping spell.

As soon as they did, they shouted, "Charge for food!"

Instantly, Ray gave them a slap to the face.

SMACK!

A crisp sound was made, but the refugee ignored the pain and wanted to shout the slogan again, only to be slapped again.

This time, it was on the other cheek.

The process continued for a few minutes until their cheeks were heavily bruised.

They were about to open their mouths again until they saw Ray raising his hand again.

"Wait, wait, wait, I’ll stop shouting the slogan!" They quickly panicked and pleaded.

"Hmm, have you regained your clarity then?" Ray asked. "I know starving people usually lose their minds, but as long as enough pain is inflicted, they will come back to their senses."

"Yes, I’m clear-headed."

Each slap was more painful than the previous.

What made it worse was that their consciousness remained awake.

They couldn’t possibly continue to endure once they realized the opponent was a lunatic.

"Give him some food first." Ray signaled for the soldier to bring over the food.

"Oh, make sure to not be a lot. Just enough for him to stay awake and not starve to death." He warned when he saw the soldier carrying too much food.

In the end, only a croissant was brought over.

Nevertheless, to the refugee, the croissant was like a delicacy.

Once they got hold of the croissant, their mouth began to munch nonstop without pause.

’Ugh, that’s my breakfast from the Golden Patisserie!’ Jake felt an aching pain in his heart when such a luxurious breakfast was being devoured like some low-end bread.

By the time the refugee finished the croissant, Ray retrieved a water bottle.

"Need a drink?" He asked amusingly and extended the bottle to him.

Right when the refugee was about to grab it, Ray retracted his hand.

"Your name?"

"M-Marsh..." The refugee, identified as Marsh, knew he had to answer the question to quench his thirst.

"So Marsh, where did you come from and why did you want to rob our carriage?" Ray continued his question, his hand playing around with the water bottle.

Who said violence was the only way to get someone to speak?

Just make them eat something dry and require liquid content to quench their thirst.

Sure enough, Marsh stared at the glistening, clear water like a mesmerized person.

"We came from the outskirts of Moonrock Town. The monster tide erupted out of the blue, forcing all of us to flee. Many of us were scattered and struggled to find food." Marsh said in a hoarse tone, his tears started dripping down to the ground.

Moments later...

"Oh, you’re done with your sob story?" Ray jolted awake and yawned.

"Listen, I obviously knew that you fled. I’m asking how you fled?" He raised his voice and gave the latter a kick.

His actions quickly took everyone by surprise as they thought he was going to sympathize with the refugees.

"Smack this Marsh back to sleep and wake up another. Then ask the same question I did." He snorted coldly and instructed a soldier to handle the rest while he went back to the carriage.
