Chapter 14: Recovered

So he slowly grew to be labelled a troublemaker. But he hadn’t cared. He also wasn’t one to shy away from equality when it came to bullies.

Until things took a wrong turn when he stood up to the teacher’s pet. And as punishment, he was dragged out and publicly whipped as a troublemaker.

During this experience, he realised that the teacher’s opinion had also shaped how some of his peers perceived him.

Growing up, he quickly let bygones be bygones, faced with the harsh realities of life. Logic stated that there was a morality of right and wrong. Good and bad. But human emotions dictated otherwise.

Doing what was right was natural as a human. But if those with greater power failed to stand up for him in his time of need, then why should he do the same?

Everyone was responsible for their own lives.

His mindset only deepened further when he found himself in this world.

Hunters would not face down a beast more powerful than themselves, nor exchange their lives to save one ordinary man when they could save several more by conquering a dungeon and livestreaming it before it turned into a dungeon break.

So Abel was determined to grow stronger, even if it meant becoming...

A Dungeon’s Final Boss!

That was the reason he had managed to steel his mind through his dungeon Final Boss Personas. He thought that he would be unable to get through his second Persona as well. However, it seemed that attaining a non-humanoid Persona that functioned only on vicious instinct was enough to trigger some unpleasant memories that he thought he had forgotten.

And with this newly attained instinct, he had subconsciously changed his dream to end with his revenge.

Abel decided not to dwell on the matter and placed it aside.

"How long was I in the dungeon?" Abel asked.

He had forgotten to check the time he entered the dungeon, so he didn’t know how long his consciousness was in there.

[The time duration is at a 1: 1. The host was in the dungeon for 30 minutes.]

Abel nodded. He summoned his status.

Status.

Abel quickly recovered. On the third day, he received therapy to regain familiarity with his legs.

Abel hadn’t received any new Final Boss Persona yet. But he wasn’t that expectant of one. The continuous incidents of the machines scanning his condition going erratic and nurses rushing into his hospital room would only delay his recovery or cause the doctors to further look into his condition, which would do more harm than good.

So instead, he focused on getting out of there first and returning home.

Abel was currently sitting in Dr Martha’s office, discussing the arrangements for him.

"Have you thought about it, Mr Abel? Would you like to apply for our mental health care program? If you can’t hold back on quickly obtaining your Hunter Certificate and License, then we can aid you in doing that and keep the Hunter Association from dragging you into a dungeon until you’re mentally able to handle it," Dr Martha responded calmly, with both her arms folded under her chin and supporting it upwards.

"Thank you for the offer. But I’m fine," Abel shook his head in response. His situation was different. He knew that the offer didn’t come with treatment to help him deal with the effects that might emerge from obtaining a Final Boss Persona, so it offered little to no value to him.

As it was his source of strength, he planned on keeping this secret to himself forever.

"Joining the mental health care program is also a good place to make connections with others, which might help you in getting recommendations for a guild. But that’s fine. If you change your mind, you can give us a call anytime," Dr Martha replied.

She took out a card from under a book on her table and handed it to him.

Abel received the card and stored it in his pocket.

"Are you planning on getting your Hunter Certificate and License?" Dr Martha asked.

Abel nodded.

"That’s a good decision. You don’t want the Hunter Association coming knocking at your door for being an unregistered Hunter," Dr Martha replied with a satisfied nod.

"I’m sure that the security agents sent by the Hunter Association will be glad to hear that you’re meeting with them. Let’s go. I’ll personally lead you there," Dr Martha said, arranging some documents into a file as she stood up from her seat.

Abel nodded and stood up from his seat. He exited the room behind her.

They passed through numerous passageways and open spaces, allowing Abel to understand just how large the hospital was.

Soon, they arrived at the receptionist’s area.

Abel saw two men. One had short braided hair and dark skin, while the other was fair-skinned with a buzz cut. The former wore a black shirt, and the latter a brown shirt. Both wore pairs of blue jeans. They also wore armguards and cuirasses over their chests and carried sheathed swords strapped to the sides of their waists.

Abel’s expression shifted as he realised that these were the security agents. They looked as though they were ready to hunt him down if he decided to run away.

The moment they stepped into the receptionist area, the men noticed them. Their gazes immediately shifted to Abel as they scrutinised him.

They arrived before them.

"This is the newly awakened Hunter, Abel Gregory. I’m sure you’ve already been briefed about him," Dr Martha said, pointing at Abel.
