Chapter 20: Recruit: Marie Evans

Leon could see the surprised and delighted expression on Cassie’s face, making him chuckle.

He turned his attention to the cube that had mysteriously appeared on the ground beside the zombie.

The girl also noticed it and picked it up. After a few seconds of staring blankly at it, she then brought it to him.

Leon accepted it from her and crushed it. A long, curved dagger, almost like a short sword appeared in his hand, the blade gleaming darkly.

[Poison Blade - Can decrease the target’s vitality by 10% with each strike. +6 Agility points when equipped.]

Leon hummed, impressed.

However, this weapon was of no use to him, and it rightfully belonged to Cassie anyway. So he tossed it back to her.

The girl clumsily fumbled to catch it and avoid injuring herself, then looked at him with bright eyes.

"You’re now an evolver like us. Take care of two more zombies, then give the spear to her."

He said, pointing at the sports trainer who flinched instantly.

Cassie nodded, then took a bold step that surprised Leon.

Instead of waiting for the zombies to approach her, she dashed at the closest ones instead.

The group was forced to halt because of Leon’s ’training’ and everyone was watching carefully.

When they saw Cassie suddenly take off at a speed faster than before, many were shocked.

This time, she didn’t stab the zombies but instead beheaded them in swift, clean movements.

She leveled up again, reaching Level 2, then came back to Leon.

Receiving a nod from him, she handed the red spear to the next person.

"Name?" Leon asked.

"It’s Marie Evans."

The woman with auburn hair said with a confident smile. Gripping the spear tightly, she stood before Leon, focussing the attention of the zombies on herself.

When the first two came close enough, she expertly swung the spear, slicing the heads of the two zombies at the same time.

[You have slain a Level 3 Normal Zombie! +4 Strength points gained!]

[You have slain a Level 4 Normal Zombie! +2 Mana points gained!]

Luckily for her, her two kills had dropped one scroll and one treasure cube for her.

Just like Cassie, she picked them up and handed them to Leon. Despite the boy being a few years younger than her, she still respected him.

Leon calmly accepted the two and inspected the scroll first.

[Trait: Jungle Predator - The user is imbued with the instincts of a hunter and an apex predator, trained and skilled perfectly for slaughtering preys and enemies.]

His eyes glinted as he read the information, nodding.

’It’s a good skill... but it won’t be useful for me.’

After all, he already had the Martial Mastery Trait.

"Hold it in your hand and think ’learn’."

Passing it back to her, he crushed the cube and watched an item appear from it. It was a rusted bronze shield that seemed to be barely holding on.

Leon checked its information with a frown.

[Broken Shield - Can tank attacks from any creature below Level 10]

Although useless to someone like Leon, it was still good for Marie.

"You can have it. And the spear too."

Marie’s eyes widened, clearly not expecting the gift. She had seen how good the stats of the spear was, and she was elated to have it.

Sensing the impatience of the other evolvers and those waiting behind, Leon rolled his eyes.

"Marie and Cassie, finish off the rest."

The two ladies glanced at each other, then carefully advanced towards the six remaining zombies.

Cassie killed them by taking advantage of her superior speed, slashing her dagger by their necks before they could react.

Marie was different. She bashed a zombie aside with her shield, then skewered the remaining two in their heads.

Before the fallen one could rise again and attack her, she sliced its head off its neck cleanly.

"Good job. Let’s move."

Leon gave them an applaud, then gestured for the group to continue moving. Several of the normal students looked at the two ladies with envy, seeing them hold weapons of their own.

Unfortunately, they didn’t have the courage to step forward and face zombies like them. Meanwhile, the remaining three that had agreed to join Leon earlier were nervous and excited, waiting for their own turns.

The group made their way straight to the restaurant with barely any trouble. The roaming zombies that blocked their paths were taken down from a safe distance, either by Selene’s icicles or Gwen’s arrows.

Finally, the group arrived at the restaurant, seeing the grand building completely isolated and locked.

Selene’s brows furrowed. "People are inside."

The group stopped completely, waiting outside the locked glass doors of the restaurant.

"What’re we going to do?"

Gwen asked, staring at the doors with furrowed brows.

Stepping forward, Reymond said in a calm voice. "Let’s speak with them. Whoever is inside. Perhaps they might want to join us."

Before anyone could agree or disagree with him, the doors were opened and five men with ammunition stepped outside, glaring at the students intensely.

Everyone became alert, as man’s fear of guns had become instinctive.

Selene glared back at them coldly, noting that they weren’t students but seemed to be gangsters from the outside.

One of them, a red-haired guy chuckled.

"Lucas, you see this? This is a blessing. Fine babes delivering themselves unto us. I told you they’d come."

Lucas took out a pack of cigarettes, putting one in his mouth and smoking.

"Your intuition is not bad."

Cocking the gun in his hand, he raised it and shot a bullet into the sky.

"Ahh—"

The normal students flinched and let out startled screams, cowering at the sight of modern ammunition.

Selene, Gwen, and Reymond glanced at each other, a tacit understand passing between them.

"Kiddos, obediently come inside and I might not have to kill anyone of you as an example."

The man called Lucas said as he blew smoke through his lips, looking incredibly threatening.

"Reymond, do it." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Hearing Selene’s voice, the brown-haired boy disappeared.

"Ahhhhhhhhh!!!"

What followed was a bloodcurdling scream from Lucas as his hand holding the AK-47 fell to the ground.
