Chapter 27: Dealing With The Theif

Seth’s vision honed on the three silhouettes of the Defiled approaching from afar.

Due to the evolution and upgrades his body underwent, he noticed stark heightened changes in his senses.

Even when four of his teammates came into the supply building, he could practically feel the distinct essence trail they all gave off.

He frowned, realizing something. "Wait... four people?" His pupils constricted as his gaze turned to the Defiled’s corpse nearby.

Taking count of himself and Uriel, there should only be three others. The rest were dead. So this number didn’t make sense unless...

His expression went cold as he felt the hidden presence sneaking toward his unclaimed prize.

His body flashed forward, and his arm reached for the void.

Before his heightened senses, Roderick’s gene skill might as well have been non-existent.

"So you’re the thief." Seth’s eyes went colder as his hand clenched tight around the bastard’s neck.

From the distance, Elaine and the others frowned in confusion. In their view, Seth was talking and interacting with thin air.

"Big bro couldn’t have been hit badly in the head during his battle, right?" Brandon worriedly expressed.

Elaine’s eyes flickered as though she could guess something. She spoke, "Didn’t you notice something wrong with our drops?"

Brandon raised a brow, giving her a side glance. "Like?"

Elaine shook her head. "Then just shut up and watch."

Jack’s eyes flashed, also seemingly understanding her implication.

"A thief!" he whispered, gaze squinted.

...

Roderick panicked as he felt an irresistible level of force constrict around his neck.

Feeling Seth’s cold gaze wash over him even with his skill active sent a chill down his spine.

He flailed and struggled against the vice-like grip, but it was useless. It didn’t budge.

Throwing all caution aside, he poured essence into the intangible function of his gene skill in a frenzy.

He didn’t dare imagine his fate if left to Seth’s hand.

Seth hated him. No matter how unconcerned and uninterested he acted before, Roderick had sabotaged and pulled stunts against him for years in Avalon.

’If Seth has his way, what will become of me?’

Terror crept through his veins, his heart sinking at the realization his skill wasn’t working!

In fact, the situation got worse. "Argghhhhh!" he screamed in pain as a torrent of foreign essence forced its way into his body.

Seth frowned. "You want to escape? You wish!" His grip tightened.

A torrent of brightly hued essence pulsed from his grip. The intangible energy ripped into his captive’s system, wrecking a furious rampage across energy nodes, rupturing arteries and internal organs in its wake.

Roderick screamed hoarsely like a pig at slaughter, his essence dwindling rapidly, his vitality plummeting just as quickly.

Finally, his essence was exhausted enough. His gene skill canceled, and his bleeding body flickered into existence.

His trembling pupils glared at Seth. "Let me go!" he struggled to demand, his voice faint as his throat was gripped tightly. The foreign essence rampage finally came to a halt.

Seth raised a brow. "Still able to talk?" His grip tightened as his arm moved, raising the trembling Roderick up so he could stare at him face to face.

Roderick’s heart hammered against his chest as he rose slowly through the air. His face contorted from pain.

’When did Seth get so tall!’

He was finally face to face with Seth, staring into his eyes properly. Staring at Seth’s grey pupils slowly igniting with a crystalline amethyst sheen, he shivered as sweat drenched his body further.

He felt so small, so undeserving. Such a figure he was never meant to stare in the eyes. Gazing from below felt far more natural.

’W-what am I thinking!’ Roderick snapped out of his daze, his Adam’s apple bobbing from a heavy, forceful attempt at a swallow. But Seth’s grip was so tight he couldn’t get anything down even if he wanted to.

"Give what you took." Seth ordered coldly, not ready to listen to Roderick’s bullshit.

Roderick struggled once more in an attempt to speak, but could only muster grunts and hacks of spit that couldn’t be swallowed anymore.

His feet kicked at the air, his hands beat against Seth’s gripping arm, but it was all in vain.

Seth merely stared, his grip tightening as his essence stirred, infiltrating Roderick’s body.

His father once said, ’Words are only worth so much. Actions, however, are a lot more convincing.’ And Seth had to agree.

’I’m going to die!’ Roderick realized. Obeying Seth’s command was the best way out of this.

He couldn’t even argue or defend his case. Not only could he not speak, he was caught red-handed.

Honestly, he had assumed Seth would be too occupied preparing to deal with the fast-approaching Defiled. He was confident he wouldn’t be caught. But he was wrong — so, so wrong.

Seeing his vitality fast approaching single digits, he panicked and caved under the pressure of sure death.

Clattering rang out as items poured from the void around him. He relinquished everything in his inventory.

Even items that were his — he didn’t dare hold anything back at this point.

Seth saw the pile of fortune and nodded, but he didn’t let go. His eyes flashed.

There were no pros in releasing a venomous snake. The best outcome was to kill it.

But therein lay the problem. ’Would the others understand this?’ he wondered as he turned his gaze to the trio still spectating from the side.

And he was met with Brandon wearing a fury-filled expression. He had finally caught on.

Elaine’s expression remained cold. Observing closer, one could even say colder than usual.

And Jack was the one who spoke, surprisingly instead of Brandon.

Waving his hands, he spoke coldly, his gaze resting on the struggling Roderick. "Don’t worry. We aren’t fools. Morality can impede our decision-making in life and death choices."

Seth smiled, and his hand closed into a fist.

Squelch!

A head popped off its shoulders, still wearing an expression of disbelief, while the body twitched before falling stiff.

Blood splattered everywhere, staining Seth’s face, but he remained nonchalant. No one would believe it was his first time killing a human.

Seth didn’t spare a second thought for the dead Roderick. Instead, he quickly instructed:

"Quick, check the pile and search for anything that can boost recovery." He hadn’t forgotten about the unconscious Uriel.

Though it seemed Uriel was recovering just fine, he didn’t want to take chances.

Plus, giving the guy a little boost wouldn’t hurt.

The three quickly got to work. Instinctively, Seth had already taken the role of leader, and the others didn’t resist. In fact, it felt natural.

Turning his gaze toward the Defiled, who were closing the distance — already a few meters away, visible even to the regular human eye — he asked:

"Should I share, or take all for myself?"

Brandon laughed in reply. "Why ask? Leave one for us! You’re not the only one who wants to improve, you know."

Seth nodded. "Just make sure Uriel is fine." Leaving his words in the air, his figure vanished.

It was about time he tested his limits...
