Chapter 30: Frozen Death

Elaine’s eyelids suddenly snapped open, a stinging headache pulsed in her head.

She was stuck in a pile of debris, her hair scattered, crusted blood all over her face.

She winced from the attempt at breathing.

’I definitely broke a rib... or two,’ she lamented weakly.

At this point she was tired. Since this hell of an apocalypse began, it had been battle after battle.

When would they ever rest? When could they reunite with their family?

What were the chances they even still had a family to get back to?

Right now only five among hundreds of school students could be confirmed alive. As for the rest...

Elaine felt the chances were slim. The last wave of mini bosses had exited the main building after probably killing everyone within — staff or student.

Her heart ached not only from physical pain, but from the emotional distress that entailed.

The temperature of her body was on a constant drop, her eyelids beginning to grow heavy.

Her breathing went shallow as she stared at the sky. Her senses dulled to the absolute minimum, not by choice.

Her once pristine, beautiful face was now deathly pale, devoid of all blood.

A day ago she had just been an elite student of Avalon, one with a brilliant future ahead of her.

One that promised money, wealth, and power. With her family’s backing, she could have gone further, perhaps becoming a global giant.

But in a blink of an eye that possibility was erased. She and the others had been dragged into a brutal world, one far more unfavorable to the weak than the past had ever been.

She tried to clench her hands into fists, but any energy she mustered vanished with the wind.

’I-I guess this is it...’ she realized, as she felt organs shutting down in real time, her temperature dropping at an astonishing rate.

Her vision blurred badly, bordering on complete blindness, and she accepted her fate...

Her heartbeat died down, her consciousness fizzled out, and the slight movement of her chest came to an abrupt halt.

She was dead!

But only for a moment. Her irises pulsed with a faint hue.

Frost crept across the debris where her corpse lay. A stifling chill erupted into a storm of winter.

"Huh?" Both Brandon and Jack turned their heads toward the commotion.

"Oh my, I think the cold fairy just got colder!" Brandon muttered, before turning back to focus fully on the Defiled.

Jack could only spare a glance and a few thoughts before diving back into battle.

Meanwhile, Elaine’s consciousness faded and transited into another scape.

No — more like a mental scape. A land of endless snow, endless raging gales, and bone-petrifying cold.

Even she, who boasted cold resistance, couldn’t help but shiver as strands of icy air seeped into her body.

This was no ordinary cold. It even affected the mind, slowing her thought processing.

She took shaky steps forward and began to tour the land.

The more she walked, the more she saw... endless death. Creatures frozen in place, some dying of starvation first.

Seeing the eerie display of intact corpses, almost fresh beneath layers of ice as though frozen in time, she understood.

The pristine blue of ice, the purity of snow — beneath all that was just death. Endless death!

A chill spread through her being. At this moment of life and death, her mind shattered through the barrier holding it back.

Cold... so this was true cold!

Cold was the bane of existence, at least to most life on Earth.

’What right did a being who hadn’t experienced true death have to dream of holding such calamitous power?’

She had never had the right to wield true cold until she understood the cold.

And now she did. And she didn’t only take control of the cold — she took control of death!

Her eyes snapped open, erupting with complete blue light.

A storm of winter wind billowed from her figure as her frame slowly rose, not from standing but from levitation caused by the sheer power she was emitting.

A layer of frost crept across the building and beyond, encompassing all corpses — both human and corrupted.

The thing about the system they still hadn’t understood was that some monster corpses dissolved upon death.

But some didn’t. And they had noticed that those that did dissolve yielded higher drops.

Elaine had wondered why this was so. But now she understood — the system was making provisions for beings like her.

Entities that could command death!

System notification bricks flooded Elaine’s vision, her body still embodying the paleness only death could gift, but her lips retaining a crimson hue.

They moved: "Wake!" Her words, though spoken lightly, reverberated softly through the area.

At first there was nothing but silence. Even Brandon and Jack halted their battle, watching her with stunned interest.

From the far side, the Defiled watched warily. It could feel the danger emanating from Elaine’s figure. Its fur stood on end as a low growl escaped its maws.

But suddenly the stillness was broken...

Bang! A wall shattered as a frozen corpse — one Jack and Brandon recognized all too well — rushed in.

Their hair stood on end as they saw the headless, single-armed Defiled they could have sworn Seth had killed rush in.

And it wasn’t alone. Other mangled, headless silhouettes rushed in furiously, sprinting toward them...

Staring at the small crowd of frozen corpses, the two guys’ hearts chilled with fear.

’What the hell is going on?’

Elaine stood unbothered, her frame finally alighting from the air. She stood on the pile of debris that once buried her. Even her tattered clothes fluttering in the wind gave the illusion of a cold, beautiful fairy staring at mortals from a realm above.

Her cold gaze locked onto the Defiled in the distance.

And that was all it took. The living corpses became more frenzied in their charge, rushing past the stunned figures of Jack and Brandon.

Their target was clear. The Defiled roared, its berserk-like skill simmering into action as a pitch-black aura, more concentrated than before, wafted from its body.

A tempest of essence raged from its figure as it roared violently, shooting forward to decimate the dead army.

But the dead army wasn’t to be taken lightly. Myriad lights flashed as the skills each corpse once held when alive bloomed again in battle.

Brandon and Jack watched in shock as the Defiled was slowly pushed back.

Steady footsteps rang from behind them, snapping them out of their daze.

They glanced back — it was Elaine. A smile tugged on her lips, breaking her ice-cold visage.

"What are you both waiting for? An invitation?"

She crossed her arms across her chest, her head held high, her haughty voice ringing out. "I might be all-powerful now, but it still costs a shit ton of essence to keep this ability up."

Brandon chuckled in reply. "I was worried about your toys being harmed by my flames. You know, after all, I’m so hot and all."

Elaine just rolled her eyes. Compared to a few seconds ago, she was finally regaining her humanity back.

Naturally, no one wanted to be a cold, unfeeling corpse — even though she was theoretically a corpse resurrected by her own ability.

Wasting no more time, Jack and Brandon zipped into the fray. With their addition tipping the scale, their victory was 100% certain.

"I call dibs on the last attack!" Brandon announced as flames bloomed from his palms.

Finally, he could complete his inheritance quest.
