Chapter 31: Don’t you dare lose

The black-furred Defiled went limp as a flaming fist tore through its chest.

Its pitch-black eyes lit up with disbelief for a second before the abyssal energy roiling across its figure was snuffed out.

And its corpse went stiff.

A wild grin was pasted on Brandon’s face as he pulled his arm, drenched in blood and gore, out of the creature, allowing it to crumple to the floor.

[Congratulations! You have slain a Shackled Rank Defiled ’Joran the Scavenger’!]

[You grow stronger...]

[Error!!! You have reached the limit of the Shackled Rank. Break gene lock and evolve to a higher level of life to grow further.]

Brandon wasn’t bothered by the message. After all, this wasn’t the first time he had seen such a prompt.

He had long reached the limit of attributes, which was 99 — so had the other two. That was why no one was bothered he landed the killing blow.

But though he didn’t care about the stat rewards, his mind churned with expectation for something else.

[Congratulations! You have completed the Inheritance Quest!]

[You can claim your rewards....]

His grin stretched wider as he deactivated his gene skill.

Finally, the clash of blistering heat and biting cold in the air seemed to die down, with both wielders reigning in their skills.

Elaine staggered, placing her tender hands on a half-crumbled wall nearby for support to keep standing, breathing heavily and short of breath.

Her expression was one of relief as she stared at a bar blinking dangerously red in her vision.

[Essence Unit: 06/99]

Her essence was dangerously low. If the death of that beast had been delayed any longer, she wouldn’t have been able to hold on.

The living dead she had summoned vanished into sparkling blue flickers, disappearing to a space waiting to be called upon in the future.

Her gaze moved to the freshly slain Defiled corpse nearby.

’This little essence should be enough, right?’ she thought hesitantly.

But recalling the fact that she could retain more of the dead creature’s former strength the sooner she acted made her more resolute.

Take the first Defiled corpse as an example. Compared to the strength it wielded when it battered Seth in the beginning, now it could barely last an exchange against this Defiled, ending up as nothing but cannon fodder. Its strength had depreciated so much that even the force of its skill bore lesser weight on reality.

This was because it had been dead for quite some time before she reanimated it.

But now she didn’t dare make the same mistake again.

A sparse torrent of essence pulsed as her eyes glowed an icy shade of blue.

From the distance, frost crept across the corpse of the monster. At that moment she could feel an unfathomable force within the corpse.

Her eyes widened. "So this is how drops are made."

She could feel a foreign power siphoning the strength of the creature, drawing and purifying its essence before it dissipated into the void.

The force sensed her presence and froze as a prompt appeared before her sight.

[Would you like to stop the formation of kill rewards, in exchange for preserving more of the dead Defiled’s power? Y/N]

She didn’t answer immediately, letting the screen hang for a while as her gaze moved from Brandon to Jack.

Finally she sighed helplessly. If this was her kill, she had the right to do whatever she wanted. But right now this victory was a result of all their efforts — she couldn’t be greedy.

"No." The moment she gave a mental reply, three glowing orbs surfaced from the creature’s corpse, its presence growing weaker.

As though the important blocks of its existence had been removed.

Her gaze flickered with pity for a bit as she proceeded with her aim.

The crusting ice covered the creature’s body before cracking.

The dead Defiled slowly rose, alarming Jack, who had been approaching to claim the drops.

A shadowy haze billowed from his frame on instinct as he backed away, ready for round two — until he noticed the bright blue gaze of the monster.

He sighed in relief, casting a glance back at Elaine, who seemed on the verge of falling unconscious.

The monster’s frame also vanished, leaving a trail of sparkling blue lights, before Elaine, breathing a sigh of relief, collapsed from complete exhaustion of essence.

Jack then proceeded forward and claimed the three yellow glowing orbs.

The moment his hands touched them, info popped into sight.

[Royal Grade Weapon: Scavenger’s Claw!]

[Noble Grade Gene Skill Crystal: Limited Stat Conversion!]

[Monarch Grade Unique Item: Defiled’s Ichor!]

Brandon, finally removing his gaze from his completion screen, ran over to Jack’s side.

"Did we get something good? Show me," he asked excitedly, reaching out his hands.

Jack glanced at him from the side, passing two orbs but refusing to let go of the last. Caressing the orb with a deeper shade of yellow among the bunch, he spoke:

"You can pick from the rest. This one is important to me. It’s something I really need."

Brandon raised a brow. Seeing both a Royal grade gene skill and a weapon, he still moved his gaze to the orb left in Jack’s hand curiously.

But he held himself back. "I’ll go with the gauntlets then."

Jack glanced at Brandon in surprise. This was unlike him. "Don’t you want to know what it is?" he asked, offering the orb.

Brandon glanced at it for a bit before removing his gaze and walking toward Elaine’s unconscious figure. "No need. It’s better I don’t know," he waved nonchalantly.

For the first time since their team-up, a smile broke on Jack’s face. He stared at Brandon’s back.

"Not so much of a prick after all, huh?" he whispered silently.

"I heard that!" Brandon shouted, raising his middle finger as he continued to walk forward.

He proceeded to princess-carry Elaine’s body toward the direction Uriel slept.

He had experienced the effect of completely exhausting essence firsthand.

He knew how draining it could be. He also knew these guys would be sleeping for a long time.

Jack sped forward, slowing to catch up to Brandon to match his pace. "So do we just wait here or do we go help Seth?" he asked.

Brandon thought for a bit before shaking his head helplessly. "It’s better we just stay here to protect Uriel and Elaine till they come to."

Jack’s brows furrowed. Honestly, he still had a bit of fight in him. Preferably, he’d like to battle more Defiled if there were any.

"Are you sure?" Jack asked reluctantly.

Reaching beside the sleeping Uriel, who had fully recovered from all visible injuries, Brandon gently placed the pale figure of Elaine beside him before looking for a pile of debris to sit on. His voice echoed:

"It would be a bad idea to leave these two alone and unprotected. Plus, even if we go over to Seth, you saw how easily he dealt with that abomination. If there’s something out there giving him a hard time, I seriously doubt we will be of much help. Rather, we’ll be a burden."

Listening to this, Jack couldn’t argue with the logic. He sighed in disappointment.

’Well, whatever. There should be stronger opponents in the future...’ he thought.

Both figures stared at the sky, mind

s ringing with the same hopeful train of thought.

"It’s up to you now. Don’t you dare lose. You have to get us out of here."
