Legacy of the God of War
Chapter 357: A Race Against Time
Sun Ming grabbed her laptop and looked up at the anxious faces surrounding her. "Can I have Zhang Mei’s number so I can check her location?" she asked, her fingers hovering over the keyboard.
Li Xinjie quickly checked his phone and recited Cen Yuhuan’s number. Sun Ming’s fingers flew across the keys, her brow furrowed in concentration. After a few moments, she frowned. "Strange," she muttered.
"What’s wrong?" Li Xinjie asked, leaning forward.
Sun Ming looked up, her expression puzzled. "It’s in the mall parking lot."
"Parking lot?" Li Xinjie echoed, a sinking feeling in his stomach.
Sun Lixia turned to Deng Chengxi, her voice sharp with urgency. "Get a few men to go and check at the mall parking lot... now."
Deng Chengxi nodded, not wasting a moment as he hurried out to dispatch a team of guards.
As the tension in the room mounted, Li Xinjie paced back and forth, his unease growing with each passing minute. It was unlike Cen Yuhuan not to answer her phone, and the fact that Zhang Mei wasn’t responding either only added to his worry.
Suddenly, the sound of a car screeching to a halt outside broke the tense silence. Moments later, the front door burst open, and Li Chen rushed in, his face etched with concern. At the same time, Deng Chengxi entered from another door, his expression grim.
"What’s happening?" Li Chen demanded, looking around at the worried faces of his family.
Before anyone could answer, Deng Chengxi spoke up. "Sir, our men just returned from the mall parking lot. They found... they found the driver dead."
A collective gasp echoed through the room. Sun Lixia’s hand flew to her mouth, her eyes wide with shock.
"And this," Deng Chengxi continued, gesturing to a guard who entered carrying several shopping bags. "They found these scattered near the scene."
Li Chen’s face paled as he recognized the bags. "Those... those are from the baby boutique Zhang Mei loves," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
The room fell silent as the gravity of the situation sank in. Zhang Mei and Cen Yuhuan were missing, their driver was dead, and all signs pointed to a violent abduction.
Sun Ming, who had been quietly working on her laptop throughout the commotion, spoke up. "I’m trying to track CCTV footage, but my skills are limited. We need more help."
Li Xinjie nodded, already pulling out his phone. "I’m calling Tang Ziyi. If anyone can track them down, it’s him."
As Li Xinjie made the call, Li Chen approached Sun Ming, his eyes fixed on the laptop screen. "What have you found so far?" he asked, his voice tight with worry.
Sun Ming shook her head slightly. "Not much. I’ve managed to access some of the mall’s security cameras. I can see Zhang Mei and Cen Yuhuan leaving the mall, but then they disappear from view. I’m trying to piece together footage from nearby streets, but it’s challenging."
Li Chen nodded, his jaw clenched. "Keep trying. Every bit of information helps."
Within half an hour, Tang Ziyi arrived, his normally jovial face serious as he took in the situation. Without a word, he set up his equipment next to Sun Ming, and the two of them began working in tandem, their fingers flying over their keyboards.
The rest of the family watched anxiously as Tang Ziyi and Sun Ming worked. Sun Lixia paced back and forth, her hands wringing together. Sun Weilong sat in a chair, his face ashen with worry. Li Chen and Li Xinjie stood side by side, their bodies tense, ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice.
After what felt like hours but was probably only about forty-five minutes, Tang Ziyi let out a frustrated sigh. "We’ve managed to track the black van they were taken in for quite a distance," he explained, pointing to a map on his screen. "But after this point here, it disappears from all cameras. It’s like it vanished into thin air."
Li Chen leaned in, studying the map intently. "That’s heading towards the mountains," he muttered.
Sun Ming nodded in agreement. "The last camera that caught it was on the outskirts of the city. After that, there’s very little surveillance coverage."
Li Xinjie ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident. "So what do we do now? We can’t just sit here while Zhang Mei and Cen Yuhuan are out there, possibly in danger!"
"We won’t," Li Chen said, his voice filled with determination. "We’ll start by searching the area where the van was last seen. We’ll fan out from there, check every road, every building if we have to."
As the family began to mobilize, each taking on a task, Sun Ming watched with a mix of awe and uncertainty. This was her family now, she realized. Their pain was her pain, their fight was her fight. Taking a deep breath, she turned back to her laptop, determined to find something, anything that might help bring Zhang Mei and Cen Yuhuan home safely.
Meanwhile, in the mountain villa, Zhang Mei and Cen Yuhuan sat huddled together on the large bed, their eyes darting nervously to the locked door every few minutes.
"Do you think they’ve noticed we’re missing by now?" Cen Yuhuan whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
Zhang Mei nodded, her hand protectively cradling her swollen belly. "Li Chen... he always knows when something’s wrong. He’ll find us. I know he will."
As if in response to her words, a sharp kick from one of the twins made Zhang Mei wince. Cen Yuhuan noticed and placed a comforting hand on her friend’s shoulder.
"Are you okay? The babies?"
Zhang Mei managed a small smile. "They’re restless. I think they can sense my worry."
Cen Yuhuan’s eyes filled with tears. "I’m so sorry, Mei. This is all my fault. If I hadn’t insisted on that last store..."
"Stop," Zhang Mei said firmly. "This is not your fault. We couldn’t have known this would happen. And we’re going to get through this together, okay?"
Cen Yuhuan nodded, wiping away her tears. "You’re right. We need to stay strong. For the babies, and for each other."
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching. Both women tensed as the lock on the door clicked open.
A man entered, his face hidden behind a mask. In his hands, he carried a tray with two bowls of what looked like soup and some bread.
"Eat," he grunted, setting the tray down on a small table near the bed. "Boss wants you healthy."
"Who is your boss?" Zhang Mei asked, her voice steadier than she felt. "What does he want with us?"
The man didn’t respond. He simply turned and left, locking the door behind him.
Cen Yuhuan approached the tray cautiously, sniffing at the soup. "It doesn’t smell poisoned," she said. "And if they wanted us dead, they wouldn’t have bothered feeding us, right?"
Zhang Mei nodded, her stomach growling despite her fear. "We need to keep our strength up. Especially me, for the babies."
As they ate in silence, both women’s thoughts turned to their husbands and family. Little did they know of the frantic search already underway, or of the dangers that still lay ahead.
Back at the Sun family villa, the search effort was in full swing. Li Chen and Li Xinjie had gathered a team and were preparing to head out to the area where the van was last seen. Sun Lixia was on the phone, her voice low and urgent as she spoke to various contacts. Sun Weilong had disappeared into his study, making calls to old associates he hadn’t spoken to in years.
Tang Ziyi and Sun Ming remained glued to their computers, scouring through data and footage, looking for any clue they might have missed.
As Li Chen was about to leave, he paused, turning back to look at Sun Ming. Something about her determined focus reminded him of Zhang Mei, and for a moment, his composure cracked.
"Thank you," he said softly. "For helping. I know you’re still adjusting to all of this, but... it means a lot."
Sun Ming looked up, surprise evident in her eyes. She nodded, a small smile on her lips. "They’re my family too now. I want to help."
Li Chen managed a weak smile in return before turning to leave. As he and Li Xinjie headed out, Sun Ming felt a renewed sense of purpose. She might not have known Zhang Mei or Cen Yuhuan for long, but they were part of her family now. And family, she was learning, meant doing whatever it took to keep each other safe.
As night fell over Shanghai, the search for Zhang Mei and Cen Yuhuan continued. In the mountain villa, the two women tried to rest, their dreams uneasy. And somewhere in between, their captors waited, their true motives yet to be revealed.
The clock was ticking, and with each passing moment, the danger grew. But so did the determination of those searching. The Sun family had faced challenges before, but this... this was a test unlike any they had faced before. It was a test of their strength, their resources, and most of all, their love for each other.
As Li Chen drove through the darkening streets, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly, he made a silent vow. He would find Zhang Mei. He would bring her and their unborn children home safely. And whoever was responsible for this... they would pay dearly for threatening his family.
The night was long, and the road ahead uncertain. But one thing was clear - the Sun family would not rest until Zhang Mei and Cen Yuhuan were found. The question was, would they be in time? And what price would they have to pay to bring them home?
