As the only surviving witness on site, Dr. Karen Johnson was able to glimpse parts of what happened by the exhaust flames of the many miniature missiles and the firelight from vampires burning alive.
But most of her attention was focused on the bursts of ultraviolet light and the vampires screaming as they turned to ash.
Without question, hearing those monsters howl in agony was deeply satisfying for someone who had once been their victim.
The flashes were brief, however, and she never got a clear look at the one who had come to save her.
Still, judging by the sheer enthusiasm with which he slaughtered vampires, she already trusted him.
The female doctor sprang up from her crouched position.
That sudden movement made her dizzy for a moment—the blood loss from when she had willingly let Blade bite her earlier was still affecting her.
Fortunately, it remained manageable.
Bracing herself against the wall, Karen Johnson asked:
"How are we getting out?"
"Relax, and leave everything to me, ma’am," Green Arrow Duck said in his synthesized electronic voice.
Then he immediately got to experience what it was like to have a woman suddenly riding a roller coaster scream directly into his ear.
To clarify:
The Duck-Leopard Armor had excellent sound filtering.
When abnormal external noise levels were detected, incoming audio into the helmet was automatically reduced.
The entire process occurred in microseconds.
Unfortunately, that didn’t help much when the person inside naturally had super hearing.
Though the Kryptonian pilot mainly relied on the armor’s sensors rather than his own enhanced senses, that didn’t mean his eyes and ears were useless.
He still heard and saw everything he normally would.
After leaving the underground Eternal Night Temple, Karen Johnson finally used the weak moonlight to see what had rescued her.
The vampires’ description had actually been fairly accurate.
Robin Hood Donald Duck.
Except this version was battle-damaged.
Most of the fuzzy cloth camouflage covering the body had been scorched or torn away, exposing sections of metal armor beneath.
It gave the cute appearance a touch of smoke, menace, and brutality.
Once she was set back on the ground from where she had been tucked under one arm, the doctor asked in disbelief:
"You... what exactly are you?"
"I’m just the reinforcements someone called in. Don’t ask too many questions and force me to silence you."
Green Arrow Duck answered bluntly.
Mostly because he didn’t want to deal with endless questions he had no intention of answering.
Sure enough, his attitude instantly blocked up all the questions in Karen’s heart.
She wanted to ask.
But if asking got her killed...
From the medical compartment on his back, Green Arrow Duck pulled out a dose of Embrace Serum and handed it to her.
"You look like you were bitten. This can prevent transformation into a vampire. You know how to use it, right?"
Karen accepted the serum but didn’t inject it immediately.
Too many questions scratched at her curiosity.
Not asking was painful.
But asking might get her murdered.
Seeing her conflicted expression, Green Arrow Duck ignored it and turned toward the entrance of Eternal Night Temple.
Watching the battle alone from outside was one thing.
Having another person around was another.
Better to head back underground and pretend to be busy.
Karen hurriedly asked:
"You’re going back in?"
"I’m reinforcements. You didn’t think Whistler called someone over here just to rescue you, did you?
"Find somewhere to hide.
"You’d better hope the next people to come out of that tunnel are me and Blade.
"Otherwise, make sure wherever you hide is safe and well concealed."
After saying that, Green Arrow Duck bent his knees slightly and glided toward the temple entrance as though wheels were mounted under his feet.
Then he jumped inside.
Because the Duck-Leopard Armor had relatively short sensor range in the underground environment, the pilot simply issued a standing kill order on all vampires and relied entirely on tracking combat missiles.
It was also a convenient chance to test the weapons.
Know why the armor had been designed in duck form?
Because a duck’s backside had enormous carrying capacity.
Enough to bring ammunition for a small war. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
If it were like a fighter jet that needed to return to base after firing six missiles, forget about clearing the battlefield.
Or he’d have to imitate those idiots in advanced armor who charged into melee waving spears and yelling.
Now blowing up vampires was like setting off firecrackers.
Even though it belonged to the same Duck-Leopard Armor series, the Panther form simply couldn’t match the Duck form’s battlefield-clearing capacity.
As for humans—
Railgun treatment.
The ammunition he carried for normal targets was only practical through the magnetic railgun.
The anti-vampire specialty rounds weren’t particularly effective against humans.
Whether humans lived or died depended on luck.
Just don’t block the way.
He advanced downward, following Blade’s trail.
The large number of vampires and humans previously detected had already been thinned out by Blade earlier.
This second trip down was merely cleanup duty.
Los Angeles had been turned into a smoky mess for more than a year by these radical vampires.
Small nests and isolated dens could be handled by vampire hunters.
A certain film studio executive was too lazy to get involved.
But a gathering this large?
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
There was no reason to let them survive and continue causing chaos in the streets of Los Angeles.
As for the human collaborators—
Green Arrow Duck had less murderous intent toward them.
Once Blade finished and left, this ruined temple would be blown apart anyway.
Hopefully any surviving humans would climb out in time.
Otherwise they’d simply be buried alive inside the sacred ground of vampires.
Look at that.
How merciful he was.
At least he hadn’t told them, You failed this city, before executing them.
Most of the time he only aimed for their legs.
Feeling saintly and compassionate, Green Arrow Duck passed a human frantically swinging an empty rifle in all directions.
Intentionally avoiding vital points, he fired one shot at the man’s leg.
Unfortunately, the railgun round was too powerful.
Not only did it punch straight through the leg, it ricocheted.
After several bounces, the bullet somehow lodged in the poor bastard’s rear neck and cerebellum.
Absolutely unsalvageable.
What a pity.
When your luck runs out, even mercy can’t save you.
The guilt lasted approximately 1.5 nanoseconds.
Then Green Arrow Duck forgot about him completely.
Because something more important required attention.
The place where Blade and Deacon Frost were fighting was exactly as in the movie—
The main altar platform of Eternal Night Temple.
The difference was that in the film, the room had been brightly lit.
In reality, the battle between half-vampire and Blood God was taking place in total darkness.
Though Green Arrow Duck had sabotaged the ritual and intercepted much of the natural energy infusion—
And though the Daywalker, who should have been drained to death as the sacrifice, had escaped early thanks to outside help—
Strictly speaking, the Blood God Deacon Frost had become should have been incomplete.
Defective.
Yet judging by the firearms discarded nearby that still contained ammunition, the pre-battle concern had likely been correct:
The Blood God was immune to silver nitrate rounds and ultraviolet rounds.
That was why Blade had abandoned guns entirely.
The only weapon left capable of cutting the Blood God was the acid-etched silver-plated titanium sword in Blade’s hand.
But even sword wounds merely slowed the Blood God’s regeneration slightly.
They caused no true damage.
For reasons unknown, Deacon Frost had somehow acquired a katana and was dueling Blade blade-to-blade.
No matter how much time advanced or technology improved, brutal close combat remained the most primal and thrilling kind of battle.
Anyone could tell, however—
If this continued much longer,
The final victor would be Deacon Frost, Blood God incarnate.
