Master Of None
Chapter 2881. Time To Move Forward...
Midnight and Walker showed up at one of the arena training grounds. Having to separate some training grounds for those warming up before heading to the coliseum had been an important step for those who traveled here to Genesis to fight it out. Partially for the privacy to warm up, and also for the simple fact that other training grounds would be more crowded normally.
Yet, this one was entirely devoid of anyone else. The only people were Su and a group of barely functional guards.
The guards were lining the walls half asleep and clearly tired beyond whatever other training they had ever been through. The last day they had been challenged to showcase their strengths and also fight against Su. often multiple of them at once to assure that they could have a chance at all.
However, when they saw Walker, they were slightly more energetic because they knew that he might get them out of their harsh training.
"Su!" Midnight leaped forward before stopping and realizing that Su had no armor on at all and was just wearing some basic training clothes. She also had a small pile of broken shields next to her that she was glaring at with disdain.
The usually calm and happy looking Su was nowhere to be found. It was the same complexion she had when she was upset at someone for doing something she knew that they knew was wrong.
"Good, you could have shown up earlier. I am training. The old shields and armor aren’t worth using anymore. My skin is tougher than them already." Su stepped forward immediately trying to catch Midnight in a charge. Without the shield in her hand, Su was using her own body as the shield.
This prompted Walker to step in and make a small wall of earth that promptly crackled and fell back on to the ground. The annoyed scoff from Su was incredibly uncharacteristic for her. Everything she was doing was out of the ordinary.
"You know what Midnight? I think Su is going through a growth spurt and needs a good battle." The dastardly grin from Walker made it all too clear that he had caught on to something.
He also clearly knew that Su had an idea of what was going on too. Partially since he could see that there was a few scales on Su’s arms and the wings she had grown falling off and also adding on to the fact that she appeared to have broken some of her armor from stress, not battle.
The armor on the ground had broken as she moved her body. It had cracked or bent out of shape and been torn off or unclasped violently. The shields were broken because she had wielded them with strength above what she had been capable of.
This sort of made sense though.
Su was bonded with Midnight as a guardian for her. She held a unique bond that has allowed her to become a half dragon. Hence the scales, affinity changes, and most of all her class. This change had been a big adjustment since Su had to relearn parts of who and what she was. It had taken time but her mentality had been the same throughout.
Lately though, she has shown a little more willingness to fight. She had also brought down more authority on those who had abused their positions to gain things in a greedy manner. She had been chasing after those who had abused the classes and positions they had while ignoring their orders. That has been good for Genesis since it was solving problems that would grow beyond control if left alone.
But the key point here was, that Midnight had undergone a stressful process to step forward as a dragon. As a true dragon champion. She had taken steps to pursue what dragons had believed as a fantastical process of creating a dragon core.
Midnight hadn’t just made a normal dragon core either. She had made one that helped her with every mana she used. It was many steps above the normal.
So, wouldn’t there be some effects of Su who she was bonded with as her guardian? As the person who was supposed to be the first line of defense and guide for her?
Su as a true draconic guardian and half dragon had forged her bond with Midnight because she wished to protect those who were family to her. To protect those alongside Midnight. In doing so, she created that bond with Midnight’s blood. Their bond was entirely unique and separate from the bond that Walker had with Midnight or with Onyx.
Therefore, Su’s body had taken all the stored nutrients and mana that she had been gathering unconsciously and was pushing herself to advance too. It was moving forward and Su was channeling all the emotions and energy she has right now in to training others or bringing good to Genesis.
The thing was, she was getting too strong to be partnered with those she trained. She couldn’t keep facing the strongest people either. If she kept challenging dragons and others of similar standing, then she would eventually beat them down too.
Midnight needed to take a little responsibility and help Su deal with the consequences of being a true dragon champion and true draconic guardian pair.
As Walker dodged to the side, Su used her body as a shield to charge again, Midnight slashed with her claws as she took her dragon form. As much as Midnight wished she could fight Su head on in her dragonkin form, even after her recent growth that was impossible.
Even if Midnight wanted to fight Su outright with everything she had, she believed that Su would win. That wasn’t her feeling less than or worse for any reason, it was all in the mind.
Su has trained many people and refined her style of fighting and defensive abilities. She had done so because she knew that she could protect more people. That was a driving force that refined everything Su did. So even with Midnight’s innate greater strength and abilities, she would lose to Su who trained herself to combat beings stronger than herself.
It was also why Walker believed that Su would struggle to find those who could fight her even if they pushed to go back to the elemental planes sooner than later. This stayed on his mind since Walker knew all too well that being pulled there more and more would keep happening.
While Gil and Alma would be occupied here and Alcie would most likely stay in Genesis to keep helping others, Su and Midnight would most likely come with him. Onyx might wish to but he had his own duties now. And he couldn’t guess what Remey would do, she was a bit of a wild card.
As more mana gathered around Su again, Midnight tried to take control of it and found that she was unable to exercise that new aspect of her strength. It was like she found she couldn’t move her tail for no apparent reason. It was unsettling.
Yet, when Su breathed out a mixed wind and fire dragon breath attack, Midnight understood that she had failed using her own skill because the bond with Su was forcing both of them to not clash in their manas.
The bond was the solution to this.
The band they had was telling Su that her body had to grow. That she had to get stronger. That she had to react. That she had to fight. That she HAD to.
So why not cut off that bond and let Su adapt as she saw fit and not be led by the tradition and bonds of the dragons?
It wouldn’t harm her or Midnight, it would just ensure that they were balanced as people and that Su would not be forced in to doing what she didn’t have to. It seemed harsh, but even without a concrete bond sharing manas they would still be linked. That was a pure fact that couldn’t be forgotten.
But breaking part of the bond would allow for there to be more control of what was happening. Allowing it to be more of a choice. Especially since Su was just getting more reactive against her own will causing the feeling of frustration to be all too clear.
When Walker sensed Midnight doing something unique, he stepped in and started to block Su’s attacks. Attacks that were clearly stressing her body and causing her the chance to grow but also pain.
Whatever the case, the bonds between a dragon champion and draconic guardian could be examined more closely. It was clear to them now that some aspects of what dragons knew had been forgotten or missed in this age because of the lack of mana and growth of a true dragon.
It was also potentially just time for the guardian to let the champion be just that. A champion that could stand alone.
A part of growing up.
