Chapter 2902: 2902. More Pests

"Destroy the light eaters!" Now Walker heard clearly. The shouting, the yelling, it was all just added orders from people in battle. He also could hear the crackling of light mana being used as light spears or to cover weapons.

As he increased his speed and found himself looking at destroyed plants and herbs from the battle ongoing, he also took in the full scene of several differently shaped light elemental races fighting against larger star fish shaped creatures.

’Light eater starfish

This is a monster that has always been kept in line by its natural predator, the screeching light parrot. However, after being separated from their homelands, the parrot was unable to migrate to the area of the light water starfish. Therefore, this is now an invasive species that can not be quelled unless hunted properly.

They have amazing regenerative healing abilities, this was what made them so popular to study when they were first discovered. However, they were discovered to be poor ingredients and materials for healing potions and equipment.

They are also a monster that consumes and stores very large amounts of light mana causing inadequate amounts of light mana to be properly within an area they live. This causes plants, other monsters, and even materials naturally present within the lands to develop slowly or perish entirely.

They are...’

Walker saw the dog sized starfish using their eight arms to leech on the light mana, however, the largest of them were targeting those fighting them. Proof that they had a lot of threats to people once they were larger in size. Basically, they were a threat to anything that had a lot of light mana that they might be able to consume.

It was even more threatening as Walker saw the light mana stored within the light eater starfisher’s body begin to absorb and condense a new arm for them when damaged. Meaning that they would keep self healing as long as they had the light mana to provide themselves that healing.

The light mana was their very nutrients. They could eat other things, but as long as they had light mana they would be able to reclaim their strength.

When Walker looked at the fighters struggling, the mages as well, he understood that they were a group of fighters that came from various races. Some that seemed familiar and others he had no idea what they might be called.

"The light sworn mercenaries do not fall when facing enemies we are paid to handle!" a roar from one of the taller women drew Walker’s attention. For what he knew, the sharper features and glowing blue eyes told him that she was of the sapphire eyed race, a race that lived within the light elemental planes and were considered powerful magic casters.

They had an affinity for blue light which was why every single member of their race had blue eyes, yet, they also possessed the softer bodies that could become harmed if they took physical damage. They also healed slower because they were so focused on the maanas within their bodies. They did have amazing defensive magic using blue light to create it.

This was why he was not surprised to see light spears made of blue light flying from around the woman commanding her mercenaries and attacking even more. Plus, now that he heard her shouting and increasing the morale of her group, it proved that she and they had been hired to assist in this fight.

But they were starting to lose.

The light sworn mercenaries did not have the mana pool to handle these light eater starfish. They had much more stored light mana now that their natural predator was not around to cull them properly. It meant that this group would lose this fight without someone helping out a little more.

With a strong stance, Walker drew on some dark mana and kept it from colliding with the other manas. He isolated each starfish into bubbles and watched as they struggled with the clash of manas within. The mixing manas were easily gathered and purified by Walker, but the sudden change of events left the mercenaries entirely silent. The strength to bring dark mana within the light elemental plane was impossible to them.

They had never seen anyone capable of this.

Looking at Walker and his calm demeanor though, they felt like they were suddenly before a tribe leader or a king of a city. It felt more like they had accidentally wandered in to some magical hermit’s garden and made them show himself because they were too loud.

"I heard a bit of a commotion, this area is part of a garden being enjoyed by someone who seems kind enough. If you are all here to handle the threat, I hope it is ok that I stepped in. Plus, I think it helps you too since you have been working so hard and deserve the rest now."

His kind words set everyone at ease. Just because he was powerful and showed a smile though did not mean that everyone was relaxed. Only those who knew that they would need rest over worry had relaxed. The several stronger fighters all began to approach Walker and use the light mana around to walk closer to him.

"We are the light sworn mercenary company. We were hired by the nearby starling village to handle the threats of these monsters. We thank you for joining us, were you hired as well?" The sapphire eyed race leader was looking at Walker wondering if they were just the other group hired while Walker was the primary person hired to deal with the starfish.

"No, I was not hired. I was helping a few people here and there while taking a walk. I happened to come this way and figured I would help." His smile was even more curious as another leader with a body similar to the demi-humans spoke. The lion traits stood out much stronger.

"Then we should thank you even more for joining in this small fight. We were reaching the end of this job and our strength was much less than it was at the start. These pests heal faster than most other monsters. You were able to handle them so much more easily than we could. It was very impressive." Walker heard the clear tone of thankfulness, but also saw that the man was trying to curry some favor, it was just best practice with the situation though so he wouldn’t hold it against them.

Another with the head of a snake, scales of white and the body of a woman spoke up. "We are not used to those that may appear like yourself. Those from the dark elemental plane cannot survive here. We are curious about why you are here." Now this felt a little easier to understand.

They didn’t know who he was so they had made some assumptions. "My name is Walker and I am not from the dark or the light element alone. I am from the world if you have heard of it?" He saw sparks of realization in their eyes. It seemed some good rumors had spread about the bridges to the elemental planes.

"We do know of the world. We were not hired for an expedition there. We were to escort a race there but that was handed by the pure light angels." With this information from the sapphire eyed race, Walker could tell that this lightly sworn mercenary group must have been higher in rankings than he knew.

Mercenary groups that could work with those who served the true light sage would be very rare.

"Then we had the bad luck not to meet earlier. I would have been the one meeting you since I am one of the protectors of the world and founder of the Genesis alliance where you would have headed. Since it seems you have a group made of many races, you would fit well in Genesis, where all races are equal. If you would like I can leave you a matter of introduction if you would like to expand your clientele?"

Now Walker had begun to think. He could guide these mercenaries to head to Genesis and make ties. It could be a good way for the elemental planes to begin to grow closer with the world.

Mercenaries might not all have good attention at any time. Yet, they were also easier to hire since they would do quests that the adventurer’s guild might not post because of the gray area they were associated with. Besides this, mercenaries were present everywhere which would help familiarity.

"We would like the opportunity to speak more if you would like to rest within the village we are working for." The decision was wise and worked well, Walker just had to nod to accept it. Plus, he wanted to help heal their injured here too.
