Chapter 465: The Old Lady Becomes Sluggish
Chloe Reed’s eyes began to sting. She blinked rapidly and lowered her gaze, struggling to keep her emotions in check so her grandmother wouldn’t notice anything was wrong. She could only hope that once the poison was completely flushed from her system, her grandmother’s symptoms would improve.
Her grandmother no longer looked at her, turning her gaze to the window instead. The sky had grown completely dark, and though it was pitch-black outside with nothing to see, the old woman stared without blinking. It seemed as if new wrinkles had etched themselves onto her aged face, and her entire being exuded an even deeper exhaustion.
Chloe Reed got up and went to the bathroom. She splashed cold water on her face to compose herself. Lifting her gaze to her reflection in the mirror, a cold glint flashed in her eyes. ’Is this it? This seems far too easy for Charles Reed and Autumn Linton. They wanted to kill my grandmother!’
Chloe Reed slowly exhaled. ’I have to get them back. I have to make Charles Reed and Autumn Linton taste this same suffering.’
"You... Why are you here?"
Just then, her grandmother’s voice came from the outer room.
Chloe Reed hurried out and saw Walker Grant walking in. Her grandmother was staring at him, her gaze sluggish.
Walker Grant also noticed that something was wrong with her grandmother. His expression remained composed as he said gently, "I came to see you. How are you feeling?"
It took her grandmother a moment to respond. "I’m sleepy. I’m going to sleep."
As she spoke, she began to shift, trying to lie down.
Chloe Reed’s brows furrowed. ’In just one day, Grandmother has already slept for so long. Is this really okay?’
She said, "Grandma, don’t sleep just yet. I’m going to go ask the doctor."
Her grandmother, who had lifted the covers, slowly put them back down upon hearing this. She nodded. "Alright. Go ask the doctor."
Chloe Reed looked at Aunt Woods. "Please take good care of my grandmother."
Aunt Woods nodded. "Don’t worry."
Walker Grant followed her out. She said, "You really didn’t have to come."
Walker Grant said, "I couldn’t rest easy leaving you here alone."
"What about Noah? What if something happens to him again?" Chloe Reed looked at him. "You should go back and be with him."
"I’ve assigned more men to watch him. Nothing will happen." But Walker Grant insisted on staying.
Chloe Reed’s brows knitted together slightly. She glanced at him, but seeing his insistence, she didn’t argue further.
When they reached the doctor’s office, she explained her grandmother’s condition.
The doctor accompanied them back to the room and performed a brief examination on her grandmother. Finally, he said, "This might be caused by residual toxins. We’ll need to continue to observe her. Tomorrow, we’ll run a full workup to see if there’s any neurological damage."
Hearing this, Chloe Reed’s face paled. "And if there is neurological damage?"
The doctor replied, "That depends on which nerves are affected. We can’t be certain at this point. We’ll have to wait for the test results tomorrow."
Chloe Reed swayed, nearly losing her balance. Fortunately, Walker Grant was there to steady her.
The doctor looked at her with a complex expression. "As her family, you need to prepare for the worst. After all, she is getting on in years. First the craniotomy, and now this poisoning... even the strongest body would struggle to endure all that."
Chloe Reed said nothing, her face only growing paler.
Walker Grant said, "We understand. But please, do everything in your power to nurse her back to health."
"Of course."
