Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 220: A Sudden Unexpected Reunion
Kazuichi’s breath caught in his throat as he lifted the hood, revealing a face he hadn’t seen in years. His heart pounded, emotions crashing over him like a tidal wave as he stared at her. Hasegawa Himeno—alive, standing before him when she was supposed to be dead.
The shock rendered him speechless. Memories of the past surged to the forefront of his mind, moments of laughter, tears, and the warmth of her presence in a world that had once been so cold to him.
"H-Himeno...?" Kazuichi’s voice trembled, barely a whisper, disbelief flooding his senses.
Himeno, her expression a mix of relief and sorrow, met his gaze with eyes that had seen too much. "It’s been a long time, Kazuichi," she murmured, her voice soft, yet steady.
A storm of emotions raged within Kazuichi. He wanted to yell, to cry, to ask a thousand questions all at once. But all he could do was stare at her, his mind grappling with the reality that she was standing before him, alive and breathing. The silence stretched between them, heavy with the weight of their shared history.
The memories of their time together at the orphanage surged, vivid and unrelenting. Himeno had been more than just a caretaker; she was his protector, his confidant, the older sister he had never had. When the other children bullied him, it was Himeno who stepped in, shielding him with a ferocity that belied her gentle nature. She was the one who had wiped his tears, who had held him when the nights were too long and the darkness too deep.
But she had been taken from him—or so he had thought. The world had been cruel, snatching away the only person who had ever truly cared for him, leaving him alone once again. And now, here she was, flesh and blood, standing before him with the same determined glint in her eyes that he remembered so well.
"I thought you were dead," Kazuichi finally managed to choke out, his voice thick with emotion. Tears welled up in his eyes, unbidden, threatening to spill over.
Himeno’s expression softened, and she reached out, brushing her fingers lightly against his cheek. "I know. I’m sorry for letting you believe that," she said quietly, her touch as gentle as he remembered. "But it was necessary."
"Necessary?" Kazuichi repeated, the word tasting bitter on his tongue. His fists clenched at his sides, the pain of losing her resurfacing with a vengeance. "You don’t get to decide that for me, Himeno. Why did you even think that?"
Himeno winced at his words, but her hand didn’t falter. "I know it must have hurt. But I did it to protect you, Kazuichi," she replied, her voice tinged with regret.
Himeno’s eyes glistened with her own tears, but she didn’t look away. "From a life you didn’t deserve," she whispered, her voice filled with an emotion he couldn’t quite place.
"I wanted you to have a chance at something better, Kazuichi. A life away from all this pain and suffering. That’s why I didn’t approach you when I saw you again. I’ve been watching you, staying out of your life because I thought it was best for you."
Himeno’s gaze dropped to the ground, her shoulders sagging under the weight of his words. "I never wanted to hurt you," she murmured, her voice so quiet that he had to strain to hear her. "But I see now that I did. And for that, I’m sorry, Kazuichi. I truly am."
Silence enveloped them, the air was heavy with unspoken words and unresolved emotions. Kazuichi’s mind raced, trying to process everything. His thoughts were a tangled mess, a storm of anger, sadness, relief, and confusion.
After what felt like an eternity, Himeno spoke again, her voice breaking the stillness. "Is Ryota all right?" she asked, her tone betraying a hint of concern. "He escaped during the conflict in Yamanashi Stronghold. I told him to come to yours."
Kazuichi blinked, momentarily taken aback by the shift in conversation. Ryota—the name brought with it a wave of memories. Ryota had been Himeno’s right-hand man back in the Yamanashi Stronghold, someone she trusted implicitly.
When Ryota arrived in the Kazuichi Stronghold, he was bloodied and he was also in a near-death experience.
"Ryota... he’s okay," Kazuichi replied, his voice steadier now as he latched onto something concrete. "He made it out of Yamanashi Stronghold with us when everything went to hell. We’ve been fighting together ever since."
Himeno let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. Relief washed over her features. "Thank goodness," she whispered, her eyes closing briefly as if to savor the moment. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
Kazuichi’s mind, however, was still spinning. Seeing Himeno alive, hearing her voice, feeling her touch—it all felt surreal. But amid the whirlwind of emotions, one question burned brighter than the rest, demanding to be asked.
"What happened to you, Himeno?" he asked, his voice low, intense. "After Yamanashi Stronghold fell, after you were presumed dead—what really happened?"
Himeno’s eyes opened, her gaze meeting his. For a moment, she hesitated, as if deciding whether to tell him the truth. The weight of her past, the choices she had made, all of it hung heavy in the air between them.
Finally, she sighed a weary sound that seemed to carry the burden of years. "It’s a long story, Kazuichi," she said, her voice tinged with sadness. "One that’s not easy to tell."
"Pray tell, we have enough time. I mean, you’re now in the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold and all, so just give me a summary or something along those lines." Kazuichi let out a sigh.
Up until now, Kazuichi was still pinning her to the ground. Now that she realized what an awkward position they had, Kazuichi’s face reddened as he got up, helping Himeno up as well as he did so.
Himeno nodded slowly, acknowledging the resolve in his voice. She knew she owed him that much if nothing else. "All right," she said softly, her eyes reflecting the pain of old wounds. "But once I start, there’s no turning back."
Kazuichi’s heart pounded in his chest, a mixture of anticipation and dread building within him. He knew that whatever she was about to reveal would change everything he thought he knew, but he needed to hear it. Needed to understand why the only person who had ever cared for him had disappeared from his life, leaving him to face the darkness alone.
Himeno took a deep breath as if steeling herself for what was to come. "After the stronghold fell, I was on the run," she began, her voice steady despite the weight of her words. "The other stronghold leaders wanted me dead, and they sent Hybrids after me."
"I couldn’t... I couldn’t ask anyone for help since doing so would also bring them in danger. It was only when I encountered Ryuunosuke that I managed to escape my death."
As she spoke, Kazuichi listened intently, his mind piecing together the fragments of a story that had been hidden from him for so long. Himeno’s tale was one of survival, of loss, of choices made in the face of impossible odds. And as she recounted her journey, Kazuichi began to see the world through her eyes—understanding the reasons behind her actions, the sacrifices she had made to protect him, even if it meant breaking his heart.
By the time she finished, Kazuichi felt as if he had been through the wringer. His emotions were raw, his mind reeling from everything she had told him. But beneath the turmoil, there was a sense of closure, a feeling that despite the pain, he had found a part of himself that had been missing for so long.
Himeno looked at him, her eyes searching his face for some sign of what he was thinking. "I’m sorry, Kazuichi," she said again, her voice trembling slightly. "I never wanted to hurt you. But I hope you can understand now why I had to do what I did."
Kazuichi was silent for a long moment, his eyes locked on hers. Then, slowly, he nodded. "I do," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "I understand. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt."
Himeno nodded, accepting his words. "I know," she whispered. "And I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you if you’ll let me."
Kazuichi’s gaze softened, the anger and pain slowly ebbing away, replaced by a deep, abiding sadness. "I missed you, Himeno," he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
Tears welled up in Himeno’s eyes, and she reached out to take his hand. "I missed you too, Kazuichi," she replied, her voice thick with emotion. "More than you’ll ever know."
For a moment, they simply stood there, the weight of their shared past hanging between them like a fragile thread. But in that moment, something shifted—an unspoken understanding passing between them. They had both suffered, both lost so much, but now they had found each other again. And in that, there was hope.
The night was quiet around them, the world seemingly holding its breath as the two of them stood together, reunited after so many years.
Kazuichi’s heart ached with the pain of everything they had been through, but also with the knowledge that they had a chance to start anew. And as he looked into Himeno’s eyes, he knew that no matter what the future held, they would face it together.
