Chapter 96: The Deepmarch Dungeon (1)

After several days passed, the weekend finally arrived.

For most scholars, it was simply a break from classes and study. For Ruvian, however, this morning marked the day of his first dungeon expedition.

Standing beside his bed, Ruvian adjusted the straps of his equipment while wearing the academy’s training outfit.

The dark fabric clung closely to his body, around his waist were several belts fastened together, each carrying small adventuring gear such as pouches, and a simple utility knife.

Over the outfit, he had secured a light breastplate across his chest and a few small armor plates protected his knees and shoulders.

Ruvian moved his arms slightly, testing the fit. The armor shifted a little but remained comfortable. Satisfied, he reached for his wand and slid it into the loop on his belt.

"Alright. All prepared."

The dormitory corridor outside was still quiet this early in the morning. Only faint sounds could be heard from somewhere farther down the hall, perhaps other scholars preparing for their own trips.

"Ah, I almost forgot about it."

Ruvian opened his drawer and took out the folded piece of paper he had kept inside.

It contained several orders he had written the night before, related to his upcoming plans, which he intended to give to Silvena after today’s dungeon trip.

Then he left the room and gently closed the door behind him.

The Expedition Courtyard sat at the eastern edge of the academy grounds, a wide stone plaza normally used for training drills and ceremonial gatherings.

Today it had been transformed into a staging ground for the weekend expeditions. Rows of reinforced carriages waited along the cobbled path that led toward the academy gates.

Ruvian stepped into the courtyard and slowed as he took in the scene.

Scholars were already gathering across the plaza, their voices blending into a steady hum of excitement and nervous energy.

Almost everyone wore the same expedition attire issued by the academy.

For a moment, the sight felt strangely uniform. From a distance it was difficult to distinguish who was who. The identical equipment turned the usually colorful academy crowd into something closer to a unit preparing for field deployment.

Several groups of scholars had already gathered around the carriages assigned to their parties.

Sweeping his gaze across the courtyard, Ruvian searched through the clusters of scholars, trying to spot two familiar figures among the dark uniforms.

Then he saw them.

Silvena stood beside one of the carriages near the middle row, her emerald hair tied into a graceful bun making her easy to recognize even among the identical gear.

She rested one hand lightly against the carriage frame while speaking with Rosalin, who stood across from her with an easy posture and a relaxed expression.

Rosalin gestured occasionally while she talked, her crimson hair tied behind her head, into a ponytail to keep it from getting in the way during combat.

’Huh, and here I thought I would be the first to arrive.’ 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Ruvian felt a small sense of relief when he saw them. He began walking toward their carriage, weaving calmly through the moving groups of scholars.

Her eyes brightened when she recognized him, and she raised her hand and waved in a relaxed way.

"Ah, there he is."

Ruvian returned the gesture as he came closer.

"Sorry I was late," he said. "I couldn’t find the appointment venue."

Silvena lightly motioned her hand as if brushing the concern away. "It’s okay. It’s okay~ No other party has moved yet, and some of them are still waiting for their teammates."

She tilted her head slightly while glancing around the courtyard. "On second thought, hmm... maybe you’re not that late at all. It just happens that these people arrived early. You could say everyone is excited for this trip~"

A small, mischievous smile curved on her lips as she said the last part.

The meaning behind it was clear to him.

For the other scholars gathered in the courtyard, the excitement likely came from the fact that this was their first real dungeon trip outside the academy grounds, a chance to test what they had been learning for weeks.

But as for Silvena, the excitement was a different kind.

She was admittedly, somewhat curious to see what unexpected situation might unfold inside the dungeon, and more importantly, what Ruvian intended to do when it did.

Ruvian met her gaze and immediately understood.

Inwardly, he couldn’t help but laugh.

’She’s truly something else...’

Before he could reply, Rosalin suddenly stepped forward.

Her posture straightened slightly as she brought one hand to rest over the other near her waist. Then she inclined her head toward him with utmost formality.

"Good morning, Ruvian," she said with gentle clarity.

"I believe we have not been properly introduced yet. I am Rosalin of House Varion. I have heard of you before, and I have been quite curious to meet you in person."

"Since we will be entering the dungeon together today, I thought it best to greet you properly. I look forward to working alongside you, and perhaps learning more about your abilities during the expedition."

She ended her introduction with a small, polite smile.

For a moment, even the nearby noise of the courtyard seemed to fade from Ruvian’s awareness.

Even Silvena blinked in surprise.

"Oh my," she murmured softly, raising her hand to cover her mouth.

Ruvian felt a sudden wave of panic rise somewhere behind his calm expression.

’Why is she being so formal with me?’

His thoughts scrambled quickly while he forced himself to respond with composure.

"You really don’t have to greet me like that," he said, raising one hand slightly in a modest gesture.

"A normal greeting is fine."

"No. I insisted." she replied firmly.

"..."

"I-I see..."

"Then, in that regard, I have also heard quite a bit about you as well, Lady Rosalin. My name is Ruvian Castelor, and I will be in your care during this expedition."

Rosalin lifted her head, her expression remaining perfectly polite.

’I wonder, is she always like this?’

Truthfully, yes, she was that sort of person. But there was no reason for her to feel this way to him. Ruvian believed that he hasn’t done anything to earn her respect yet.

He glanced briefly toward Silvena, who was clearly enjoying the moment far more than she should. But thankfully, it did not take long for her to decide that the scene had become awkward enough.

"Anyway..."

Silvena said lightly, letting the word stretch.

"Should we depart now?"

She turned her head and glanced across the courtyard. Several carriages had already begun to move toward the academy gates.

"It seems like everyone who has all their teammates gathered is already on the move," she continued. "Since we’re all here, I think we should as well."

Before either of them could respond, Silvena turned and stepped toward the carriage.

She placed one foot on the iron step fixed to the wheel frame and lightly gripped the wooden side rail.

Instead of climbing up immediately, she paused for a moment and glanced back over her shoulder at them with a playful glint in her eyes.

"Try not to stand there all morning," she added with a faint smile.

Then she pulled herself up into the carriage.

Ruvian watched her for a moment, a small smile forming on his face.

Shaking the expression away, he turned his attention to Rosalin.

The morning light reflected faintly off the polished metal pieces of her gear, giving her an appearance that remained elegant even in the practical expedition attire.

Ruvian stepped slightly to the side and extended a hand toward the carriage entrance in a courteous gesture.

"You first," he said calmly.

Rosalin looked at him for a brief moment, then gave a small nod.

"Thank you."

Once Rosalin had entered and taken her seat beside Silvena, Ruvian finally stepped onto the carriage after her and climbed inside.

Outside, another carriage rolled past them toward the academy gates.

Soon, the convoy slowly left the academy.

His first dungeon expedition was about to begin. (+100PP)
