The Nameless Extra: I Proofread This World - Chapter 97: The Deepmarch Dungeon (2)
The journey after departing from the academy had been smooth, without any delay or trouble. It had already been close to an hour since they left the academy gates.
Judging by the distance they had traveled, it would only take a few more minutes before they reached the entrance of the dungeon.
From time to time, Ruvian could hear the faint sound of hooves striking the ground from outside, followed by the slow creaking of the wooden carriage frame as it swayed gently along the road.
Those sounds were very loud.
Extremely loud, even.
And that was only because the inside of the carriage was so quiet.
Turning his head away from the passing view outside, Ruvian looked toward the true cause of this silence.
There, sitting in front of him, leaning her head softly against Rosalin’s shoulder, was a certain shameless woman who had already fallen asleep almost the moment she stepped into the carriage.
Her breathing was rising and falling in a gentle rhythm that matched the calm sway of the carriage itself. A few loose strands of her emerald hair had slipped free from her neat bun, resting lightly against her cheek.
In the soft morning light filtering through the window, her features appeared unusually gentle, looking so defenseless.
’This woman really has no shame...’ he gave her a blank stare.
Silvena has never been a morning person. At such a sacred and wonderful hour, she would prefer to stay in bed, and wrapped under her blanket.
That was her usual routine.
Other than the sleepy beauty peacefully enjoying her dreams in front of him, there was also this weird, monstrous woman staring directly at him with a burning focus.
She didn’t look away.
Not even once!
Whatever thoughts were passing behind those eyes, Ruvian had absolutely no idea. But if possible, he sincerely wished she would just look somewhere else for a moment.
Because her rigid stare was extremely uncomfortable!
’Haaa... whatever.’
Seeing how this red-haired girl clearly had no intention of surrendering in her one-sided staring contest, Ruvian finally decided to break the awkward silence.
"Are you not curious as to why I, a Class E scholar, decided to team up with you?" After he had said that, there was a reaction from Rosalin.
Her eyes widened slightly, as if the question had touched something she had already been quietly considering for quite some time. "Yes... if I am being honest, I am curious about it."
"And yet you didn’t ask... why?"
Rosalin shook her head gently, her movement small and careful so as not to disturb the sleeping Silvena leaning against her shoulder.
"No, it’s not that simple," she said plainly.
"Sometimes, I prefer to find the answer by myself," she said calmly, without any attempt to decorate her words. "If I ask directly, then the answer will only be what you choose to tell me."
Hearing that, Ruvian slightly smiled.
She paused for a brief moment, as if carefully arranging her thoughts into the simplest form possible.
"But if I observe... then I can understand more."
"Also... whether you are Class E or Class A does not matter very much to me."
"I decided to join this party because I wanted to team up with you, too."
’Huh? She wanted to team up with me too?’
"Why is that?" Ruvian asked, his tone calm as he looked at her.
"Why did you want to team up with me?"
Rosalin met his gaze without avoiding it.
"To learn..." she said honestly.
"There is something I wish to learn from you."
Rosalin simply spoke what she believed.
Ruvian looked at her quietly for a moment, then released a soft sigh.
"No. You will not gain anything by observing me."
He said, shaking his head slightly.
"You should not choose the wrong role model to follow. I am not someone you should observe."
Then, a small smile slowly appeared on his face as he continued talking.
"Actually, the reason I invited you to join this team today is because there is something I want to show you," he said in an easy tone.
"When you see it, you will surely learn something from it."
Rosalin’s eyes showed a slight confusion as she listened to him.
"To show... me?"
Ruvian did not immediately explain further.
There was indeed a reason why he wanted Rosalin to be part of this expedition.
Somewhere along her path, as she grew up, the spark inside her had slowly grown faint. It had not disappeared, but it was no longer shining as brightly when she was younger.
Today, he intended to let her see her supposed role model with her own eyes. Something that would allow her to understand what kind of person she truly wished to become.
Rosalin continued looking at him, clearly trying to understand his meaning, yet before she could speak again, the carriage gradually began to slow down.
The gentle rhythm of the wheels changed as the ground became rougher, causing a heavier sound to echo beneath them.
Soon, the driver’s voice was heard from outside the carriage.
"We have arrived."
As time dragged on the road, the carriages slowed down as they got closer to their destination.
Shortly after, the road opened into a rough clearing at the edge of a low valley.
Beyond the valley, the terrain slanted downward into shadowed ground where the entrance of the Deepmarch Dungeon was hidden away behind jagged stone ridges and sparse winter trees.
The expedition site had been well planned and arranged by the academy. The entire area had been divided into three sections for order and safety.
The outer zone was closest to the road where the carriages had stopped. This zone served as a preparatory area where horses were rested and where cargo was unloaded.
People from the academy were moving about these cars, and there were also some hired adventurers who were keeping watch around the perimeter of the zone.
Then, there was the middle zone, where scholars would gather before proceeding into the dungeon.
And beyond that zone was where the mouth of the dungeon was.
’We’re finally here.’
