94 Welcome To New York

Do you know what is, in my opinion, one of the biggest advantages of being a billionaire?

Ease of travel.

Wherever I wanted to go, I had easy transportation. And yes, I'd gotten my own personal private jet. Well, it's not actually mine but Imperium Holdings' but the point still stands.

It was in that same jet I'd arrived in New York city. There I was, at the terminal, adjusting the cufflinks on my suit when the Rolls Royce pulled up in an entourage with other SUVs.

The driver stepped out of the car to open the door for the woman seated inside.

Jenny Voss stepped out and this time, I almost didn't recognize her. Gone were the leather jackets and tight jeans, replaced with a fitted blazer and pencil skirt.

She looked every bit like the corporate player that she now was. Last I'd heard, she was the CIO of Apex Investments.

An unconscious smile emerged on my face as I remembered the day I'd questioned her. I had changed her perspective with just one question and here she was now, welcoming me to New York herself.

She straightened and as her eyes locked onto mine, for a moment, I wasn't sure what to expect.

Then she smirked. "Welcome to New York, Nico!"

"Jenny." I nodded, my smile morphing into a smirk of my own.

We stood there for a second, appraising each other. Our relationship had always been… complicated. And now, there was a mix of old resentment and recent respect.

We'd both grown from the last time we saw each other and right now, we had a common enemy. That would have to be enough.

I stretched my hand in a handshake. "I'm pleased to be here."

She shook my hand with a genuine smile. "And we're happy to have you."

It wasn't the hug expected between family members but it was enough for now.

She gestured to the car. "Shall we?"

"Of course." I nodded, motioning to my staff to enter the other vehicles.

I slid into the backseat and she joined me, closing the door behind her with a soft thud.

The driver pulled away and before long, we were cruising on the crowded streets of Manhattan, complete with the sound of car horns and millions of people packed into such a small area of land.

There was a note of pride inside me as the thought filtered into my brain. Crownsborough was definitely more civilized.

I turned back to the inside of the car, glancing around at the leather interior. "Nice ride." I complimented Jenny.

"Courtesy of Apex." She replied dryly. "Might as well make use of it while I still can."

I raised an eyebrow. "That bad, huh?"

"Depending on if I win or lose." Jenny exhaled, leaning back in her seat and I raised a brow in question.

"My mother's stepping down in six months and she's thrown Jasmine and I into a cage match to see who takes her place." She explained.

"I see." I nodded. That wasn't entirely surprising. I'd read enough about Clarisse Newton to know she was itching to retire. "And how's that going for you?" I asked her.

She laughed, a sound that already told anyone listening that she definitely didn't find the situation funny at all.

"Let's see." She hummed. "Jasmine's already CEO, she has the board wrapped around her little finger and she's been quietly consolidating power for years. Meanwhile, I'm the rebellious daughter who everyone thinks can't take anything seriously. How do you think it's going for me?"

I smirked at her. "Well, you've got no one to blame for that but yourself."

"While I wish I could defend that, I can't." She chuckled, not taking offense. Good. That meant her prejudices against me were either in perfect control or gone. Either way, I can work with that.

I leaned forward slightly, resting my elbows on my knees. "But you've got something she doesn't."

She tilted her head, a faint smile appearing on her face. "And what's that?"

"Me."

She laughed at that, a genuine laugh this time. "You've got some nerve, Nico. But I'm glad you're here."

The car slowed as we approached the building where I'd be staying. A luxury penthouse suite in one of the most prestigious buildings in the city.

Jenny had insisted on arranging it and I hadn't objected. First, it's not my money so who cares? And second, if we were going to war, we needed to look the part.

As the driver parked, Jenny turned to me, her expression suddenly serious. "Look, I know I've given you grief in the past and you must feel a justified sense of satisfaction to hear this, I have to ask."

She paused before making her request. "I need your help to win this."

I nodded. I was already here to help but it really was satisfying to hear her ask that. "I figured as much."

I needed Jenny as the supreme power at Apex. If she is, Jasmine would no longer have significant power and would be out of the race for the Voss Empire. If I take her down here, she won't be a problem in the future.

I turned to Jenny. "Tell me what you need."

She reached into her bag, pulling out a tablet. A few swipes later, she handed it to me, showing a financial report.

"This is Apex's current situation. Jasmine's been using her position to strengthen her alliances on the board. She's been funneling resources into projects that boost her visibility while quietly sidelining anything I've tried to push forward."

I scanned the report, my mind already working. Apex was in a strong position financially but there were a few vulnerabilities.

Jasmine had been leveraging her influence to solidify her control but her focus on short-term gains had left the company exposed in certain areas.

"She's playing it safe." I said, handing the tablet back. "But that means there's room for you to take risks. Innovation always trumps stagnation."

"Exactly." Jenny's eyes lit up. "That's where you come in."

"Imperium Holdings has the resources and the expertise I need to make a real impact. If I can present a game changing strategy to the board, something Jasmine can't counter, I have a shot at winning this."

I leaned back, crossing my arms. "And you want me to bankroll this strategy?"

"Not just bankroll it. I need your brain, Nico. You've built Imperium Holdings into a $29 billion powerhouse in record time. You have the kind of expertise I need."

I have to admit that I wasn't just here to stop Jasmine from seizing Apex. I was also here to see if I can gain a foothold in Apex Investments and align it with Imperium's vision. The potential synergy was too good to ignore.

"Alright." I grinned at Jenny. "I'll help you."
