Chapter 278: Value Of Pendant

Aegon wasn’t fond of killing. Actually, he hated taking lives. It wasn’t his right to judge others, and he felt uncomfortable doing it. Especially since he had spent his life saving others, so how could he take lives himself?

But it didn’t mean he would let his enemies go. This was a harsh world, and Xiu had taught him well how to survive in it. Kindness toward your enemies could mean cruelty toward yourself and your loved ones.

He didn’t have any plans to let the Songsword Family go. If Samuel and the others hadn’t stopped him, he planned to let Xiu kill them all.

They had planned to kill him and his family. That alone was more than enough reason for him to execute them. However, Samuel’s interruption changed things.

"So you let them go just because of Father?" Micheal frowned. "But you don’t need to give in to him. I mean, if House Valeria learns of this, they’ll eradicate the entire Songsword House and there’s nothing Father can do to stop it."

"I think you misunderstood," Aegon shook his head. "I didn’t back away out of fear of him. It’s because he asked for it, and there’s no way I can say no to that man."

"I knew you two were close, but still," Micheal looked at him and said. "I’m surprised, though then again, I should have expected this."

"Tell me, Mike, how many people can call the Emperor at any time they want?" Aegon asked. "Even when he’s sleeping or during court sessions."

"I can count them on one hand," Mike replied.

"And how many of them will he help without asking any questions?" he asked again.

Mike remained silent.

"He does that for me," Aegon said. "That man has been helping me without ever asking anything in return. If I can lessen his troubles, then why not?"

He unbuttoned the top button of his shirt and pulled out the pendant he always wore. A sun-imprinted golden pendant. He showed it to Micheal, but before he could say anything, the prince snatched it away, staring at it with pure shock in his eyes.

"This... where did you get it?" Micheal asked before shaking his head. "No, I’m being stupid. Of course Father gave it to you... but how?"

"Is this very important?" Aegon asked, surprised to see such a reaction. "I didn’t know that. He gave it to me as a birthday gift."

Micheal stared down at the pendant with complex emotions swirling in his eyes. He kept looking at it for over a minute, and Aegon didn’t disturb him.

He could see that it disturbed Micheal somehow. He thought, ’Mike keeps his composure most of the time, but what’s with this pendant? What the hell did that old man give me?’

After a while, Micheal seemed to accept the reality as he smiled faintly. "I should envy you, but I can’t bring myself to do that. What are you, Aegon?"

"A sixteen-year-old teenager who wants to explore the world and eat sweets," Aegon grinned sweetly at him. "Is that a lot?"

"A teenager? Haha! Right, you’re a kid. I almost became jealous of a kid," Micheal let out a self-deprecating laugh. "I’ve really fallen low."

"Don’t be sad. I’m not just any kid, after all," Aegon said, then pointed at the pendant. "I have that. Though I don’t know its true value."

Micheal smiled at the pendant and said, "This pendant is called Morning. My grandmother gave it to Father. I won’t go into details since it isn’t my place to talk about Father’s matters, but this..."

He handed it back carefully and said, "This is the most important thing to Father. In this whole world, he cherishes this the most. Even more than his friendship with Elder Arnold, and that says a lot."

Aegon took back the pendant, his mind going blank. He truly couldn’t understand why Samuel would give him something this important. He didn’t deserve it. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

"He once said that one day he’ll pass this down to someone he thinks is worthy enough. I don’t know the criteria, but I’ve always wanted this. All of us wanted it since it meant we were his favourite."

He smiled faintly. "Who wouldn’t want to be the favourite of the Emperor himself?"

"This..." Aegon felt as if the pendant had suddenly grown heavier. "Damn it! He should have told me at least. Not even Opa told me. Also, does he mean I’m his heir or something?"

He felt as if the pendant was now filled with responsibilities and expectations he couldn’t handle. He wanted to be free, not burdened by such things.

"Don’t overthink!" Micheal patted his shoulder and said. "It’s a good thing. Father probably didn’t tell you because of this."

"I guess so. Overthinking does run in my family," Aegon muttered under his breath.

"Just be happy to have this honour. My father values you the most in this world," Micheal smiled and said. "I wonder when he gave it to you though. He never spoke about it."

"Hmm? On my first birthday," Aegon replied while wearing the pendant again. "I’m still surprised he made time to come for that."

"Huh? That’s pretty early."

"You didn’t know about it?"

Micheal shrugged. "He has a habit of occasionally running around without anyone’s knowledge. And if he wants to escape, who could stop him?"

Aegon felt amused and asked, "So he basically ran off mid-duty just to give me my birthday gift?"

"I can imagine him doing it," Micheal let a Starfly rest on his shoulder and said. "He’s done it many times. Though now that I think about it, he probably came to meet you."

"That damned old man!" Aegon laughed. "Yes, he dropped by my place randomly just to argue with me about nonsensical topics. Initially, I used to think he was a retired army officer."

Micheal laughed alongside him. After a while, he patted Aegon’s shoulder and said, "Thanks, Aegon. Only today did I understand why he values you so much. Your family in general."

"Because of how my ancestors defended this Empire?" Aegon guessed. "He feels guilty that he gets to be Emperor while my family has to die for the Empire? I can see it in his face."

"You’re perceptive," Micheal said while looking into his eyes. "I see so much of Xiu in you. It’s disturbing."

"Thanks for the compliment, but am I right?"

"You’re right in your assessment, but it’s not the answer to my question."
