30 Days of Passion and Revenge-Chapter 237: He’s Out of Danger
Lily was stopped outside the ward by soldiers. At that moment, she almost believed that Ethan would end up like her father—gone forever.
For a fleeting second, she felt she had nothing left. It was as if her entire world had collapsed, with darkness engulfing her completely, swallowing her whole without leaving a trace of hope.
She didn’t know what remained for her. Was it the child growing inside her or the AuroraVirus?
Never before had she regretted her arguments with her father or Ethan as much as she did now. But there was no medicine for regret.
One dead, one critically injured.
And all she could do was sit here, unable to help.
The night dragged on painfully. Lily sat there, watching the military doctors entering and leaving the ward. Each time they entered, her heart would rise and hang in suspense.
She had no idea how long she had been waiting. Her hands and feet remained ice-cold, no matter how much she rubbed them to warm herself. Even her heart felt frozen like frost had settled over it.
On the other side of the wall, Ethan lay unconscious.
Quiet.
An oppressive, suffocating quiet.
All she could do was wait. There was nothing else she could do.
It wasn’t until the early hours of the morning that several military doctors emerged from the ward, their foreheads glistening with sweat. Lily immediately stood up from her chair and stared at them, her entire body tense.
"How is he?" Lily asked anxiously as she walked toward them. It was the same question she had asked countless times throughout the night.
But none of the doctors answered her. They walked past her with expressionless faces, offering no response.
Lily glanced toward the corner of the corridor. Apart from the soldiers standing guard, it was empty—quiet and desolate. That must mean good news, right?
All night, she had been terrified of seeing soldiers push out a stretcher covered in a white sheet. That was her worst fear, the thing she dreaded most.
She was terrified to her core.
"He’s out of danger."
A voice suddenly spoke behind her.
Lily’s heart trembled violently. She spun around to see one of the military doctors, walking at the back of the group, looking at her with a faint smile.
Out of danger?
Was that what he said? Was he talking about Ethan?!
"Thank you! Thank you so much! You’ve worked so hard—thank you! Truly, thank you!"
Lily stood frozen for a moment before realizing what had been said. Overcome with emotion, she quickly bowed to the doctor, her voice trembling as she expressed her gratitude repeatedly.
Now slightly showing, her abdomen made the act of bowing a bit difficult.
"You’ve had a tough night yourself," the older doctor said kindly before leaving.
It’s okay now...
He’s out of danger.
Lily covered her mouth with her hand, almost bursting into tears. She forced herself to suppress the overwhelming urge to cry.
Standing at the corner of the corridor, she knew she couldn’t take another step forward. She could only see part of the large glass window from her position. Inside, she could only make out a white wall—no sight of the hospital bed.
It’s okay now. It’s okay.
He didn’t leave me like Dad did... He didn’t. He survived. He’s alive.
Lily fought back her tears. She couldn’t afford to fall apart now. She needed to figure out how to get Ethan out of the military hospital. She couldn’t let him stay in this place any longer.
She realized she had to leave for a while. Staying here wouldn’t accomplish anything.
When Alex Carter arrived at the hospital, he found an empty hallway and his jacket discarded on the floor.
She really does like to toss everything of mine to the ground.
Her entire world revolved around Ethan Blackwood—always Ethan.
Thud!
The breakfast bag he held slipped from his hand and fell to the floor.
Alex stared at the empty chair, his deep brown eyes darkening. Without a word, he turned and left.
The breakfast container had burst open from the fall, and the fresh soup was still steaming as it spilled onto the ground.
Alex’s solitary figure disappeared down the hallway, his steady footsteps echoing crisply in the silence. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
The main entrance, side entrance, and rear entrance of the military hospital were all swarmed with reporters, making it impossible to get through. Lily called Nanny and Secretary Helen for assistance.
She purchased a large pair of sunglasses from the hospital shop and put them on, covering most of her face. She pulled her hair forward to obscure her features further, ensuring no reporters would recognize her.
Choosing the side entrance, where there were fewer reporters, she attempted to leave but was still surrounded.
"Excuse me, why are you at the military hospital? Are you a nurse here?"
"Do you know anything about the high-profile kidnapping case that’s shocked the entire nation?"
"Is it true that the Asia-Pacific president of Blackwood Enterprise is suspected of assaulting and imprisoning dozens of individuals? How much do you know about this? Can you share any information from inside the hospital?"
"How many casualties were there in yesterday’s explosion? Did anyone survive? Have you heard anything about how the central government plans to handle this?"
As the reporters surrounded her, a barrage of chaotic questions bombarded her, making it impossible for her to move.
"Step aside! Move out of the way!"
A group of bodyguards suddenly pushed through the reporters, clearing a path and escorting Lily to a black sedan.
Once inside, Lily realized Secretary Helen had come to pick her up.
Usually calm and composed, Helen now looked visibly anxious. Sitting in the front passenger seat, she turned to Lily with worry etched on her face. "Miss Anderson, how is Mr. Blackwood?"
This was the first and most pressing question.
"He just made it through the critical stage," Lily replied, removing her sunglasses as she sank into the backseat. Her voice was hoarse and raspy.
Her throat had been strained to the breaking point when she had screamed for her father.
Her father...
The memory of that cold, white sheet flashed through her mind, and her entire body began to tremble. It would take days to retrieve his body, and until then, she couldn’t even stay by his side.
She couldn’t even do that much.
"That’s a relief," Helen said, sighing heavily. Then, noticing Lily’s red, swollen eyes, she asked, "Miss Anderson, have you been crying?"
Lily lowered her head and rubbed her eyes. "I’m fine. Have you figured out how to get Ethan out of the hospital?"
This was now her top priority.
She couldn’t let Ethan remain in the military hospital. He needed to be moved elsewhere for further treatment.
"I’ve spent the whole night making calls. We could have kept this under wraps, but the news has already gone viral," Helen said, handing Lily a tablet. "This morning, George Johnson, representing the central government, held a press conference. He stated that the illegal and heinous acts in this case will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent."
George Johnson was Alice Johnson’s father and the city’s former mayor.
George Johnson appeared stern and serious on the tablet screen as he addressed the media. His words—thorough investigation and full prosecution—rang loud and clear.
Lily frowned and tossed the tablet aside. "Is there no other way?"
Helen hesitated.
She remembered how, after the scandal at the Carter family centennial celebration, Lily had appeared frail and fragile. Yet, she had forced herself to act as though nothing had happened.
Now, despite everything she’d been through, Lily was still holding on, determined to find a way to save Ethan.
Helen couldn’t help but admire her resilience.
"There are a couple of options," Helen said after a pause. "We could send people to extract Mr. Blackwood from the military hospital and fly him abroad, ensuring he never returns to the country. Or we could notify Mr. Blackwood’s father and have him intervene. If his father steps in, Mr. Blackwood will definitely be released."
Helen’s tone suggested she had more to say, but she hesitated.
"What else is there?" Lily asked, her voice hoarse.
With the Blackwood family’s resources, getting Ethan out of the military hospital should be easy.
Helen sighed heavily. "No matter what, Blackwood Enterprise will be forced to withdraw entirely from the country. The business empire Mr. Blackwood built will be utterly destroyed."
Utterly destroyed.
There would be no chance of recovery.
And it was all because of her. If it weren’t for her contracting AuroraVirus, Ethan wouldn’t have abducted all those people, and none of this would have happened.
Her father wouldn’t have died.
Ethan wouldn’t be lying in a military hospital, hovering between life and death.
She hadn’t even had the chance to correctly see him yet.
Lily clenched her fists tightly. Helen observed her, adding, "Miss Anderson, Blackwood Enterprise is leaderless. I can offer advice, but I can’t make the decisions."
Her gaze made it clear that she wanted Lily to step up and take charge.
"I’m not in a position to make any decisions," Lily replied, her voice rough. "Helen, I just want Ethan to get out safely."
Helen sighed again. "Miss Anderson, Mr. Blackwood has always been decisive and authoritative. Now that he’s incapacitated, no one can shoulder his responsibilities."
Before Lily could respond, Helen’s phone rang. She answered it, her expression growing more serious by the second.
After ending the call, Helen looked at Lily gravely. "Mr. Blackwood’s father has been informed. He wants to video call you."
So soon...
Lily’s heart sank. She knew Ethan’s father was far more ruthless and domineering than Ethan. Now that he was getting involved, she couldn’t predict whether it would be a blessing or a disaster for Ethan.
