Chapter 279: Lily’s Desperate Stand

Lily Anderson used all her strength to free herself from Alex Carter’s grip, frantically pulling her arm away. Desperate, she cried, "I just want to know the real reason—why did he break up with me?"

She just wanted a genuine explanation.

That was all...

"Lily, it’s over between you two. Let it go," Alex said firmly, holding her arms tightly to stop her from moving. His grip was so firm it hurt.

Lily looked up at Alex, her eyes brimming with tears. "I can’t... I can’t let it go..."

How could she let this go? She couldn’t. She just couldn’t.

She wasn’t strong enough.

She didn’t want to break up, didn’t want to leave Ethan Blackwood...

"Leave quickly. Mr. Blackwood is coming. If he finds me here, I’ll be in trouble," the young security guard said anxiously, urging them to leave before dashing back to open the main gate.

Ethan.

Lily quickly turned around. Several cars began to drive out from inside the community. The first was a silver-blue convertible sports car—one of the limited-edition models under Blackwood Enterprise.

It was the car she had once told him he should drive exclusively. Ever since it has been the only car he has driven.

Ethan was behind the wheel, sitting alone in the driver’s seat. His face was as cold as ice, devoid of warmth. His frigid gaze swept over Lily and Alex before stepping on the accelerator and sping forward.

Lily pushed Alex aside without thinking and ran straight into the car’s path, standing firmly in front.

Screech—

Ethan slammed on the brakes, and the car stopped mere inches from her.

The sudden stop caused Ethan to jolt in his seat. Panic flickered in his dark eyes for a moment—an emotion he couldn’t hide.

Alex, who had been pushed aside, stood in shocked disbelief at Lily’s reckless actions.

Was she trying to get herself killed?!

Lily stood tall and unflinching, showing no fear. Her eyes locked onto Ethan’s, and seeing the panic in his gaze oddly comforted her.

He cared about her. He was nervous about her.

Their eyes met, and the panic in Ethan’s gaze quickly vanished, replaced by cold indifference. He leaned on the horn, his voice icy as he barked, "Lily Anderson, get out of the way!"

The sharp, heartless words made Lily’s body tremble, her eyes stinging with unshed tears.

"Get out of the car. I have something to say to you."

Lily didn’t budge, her expression stubborn and resolute.

"Move!" Ethan shouted again.

"Get out of the car!" Lily yelled back, her voice louder than his.

Alex stood silently to the side, his expression grim. The young security guard, meanwhile, gaped in shock. A woman daring to shout at Mr. Blackwood... Was she the first to ever do so?

Ethan glared at her coldly. "Lily Anderson! Move!"

"Get out of the car!"

"Lily—Anderson!" Ethan growled, his patience thinning. Why was she so insistent?!

"You’re going to tell me the truth today!" she demanded.

"I don’t have time for this! Move!" Ethan roared. "Don’t make me think you’re pathetic!"

Pathetic?!

Lily rushed to the side of his car without a word, pulled out the light-blue throw pillow from the passenger seat, and glared at him. "If I’m so pathetic, why do you still keep my pillow?"

"You’re right."

Ethan let out a cold laugh, snatched the pillow from her hands, and tossed it on the ground. Dust immediately clung to it. "Any more questions?"

Lily stared dumbfounded at the discarded pillow. She hadn’t expected Ethan to throw it away in front of her—so decisively, as if he was discarding her along with it.

Her heart ached unbearably.

She nearly doubled over from the pain, but Ethan’s expression remained indifferent as he looked at her. "Still not moving?"

"Why did you wait a month to tell me about the baby?" Lily asked stubbornly, her voice trembling with emotion. "Didn’t you say you wanted revenge? Why not just dump me right away? Why wait until I’d recovered?"

Ethan’s gaze darkened, his silence betraying his hesitation.

"Ethan, I just want a clear answer. Was it your father who forced you to do this?" Lily demanded, gripping the car door tightly. She refused to let go, her desperation evident.

Alex watched her quietly, her anxious and hopeful expression tugging at his heart. It was suffocating to see her like this.

The Lily Anderson he had known was a proud and elegant young woman with dignity in her bones. But now, she had fallen so far, reduced to being a mistress, falling in love with her benefactor. Now... she was desperately trying to salvage what remained.

Where was her pride? Where was her self-respect?

"Lily Anderson, don’t make me hit you. Move!" Ethan snapped.

He didn’t answer her question. Instead, he pried her hands off the car door with force, shoving her away before starting the engine again.

Lily ran back in front of his car without hesitation, blocking his path again.

"Lily—Anderson!" Ethan bellowed.

"Stop giving me vague excuses!" she shouted. "I want the truth!"

"Shut the hell up!" Ethan’s eyes burned with fury. His voice cut as he said, "Lily Anderson, I remember you once told me something. You said you’d never met a man as indecisive as me—a man who’d lose a bet and still cling to you!"

Lily froze.

"Well, I’m throwing those words back at you now!" Ethan sneered, his lips curling into a cold, mocking smile. "I’ve dumped you. Stop humiliating yourself by clinging to me!"

Stop humiliating yourself by clinging to me.

Stop humiliating yourself by clinging to me.

It had been so long since Ethan had said anything harsh to her...

The man before her—the one who had nearly died for her, who had risked legal trouble for her, who had given up his empire for her...

Now, all he had to say to her was: stop humiliating yourself by clinging to me.

Lily stood frozen, unable to move. Ethan quickly shifted into reverse, preparing to drive past her.

But Lily moved swiftly, stepping to the side and spreading her arms to block his car again. Her face was resolute, showing no fear. "Ethan, run me over if you truly don’t love me."

He had once pointed a gun at her, forcing her to admit her love for him...

Today, she would use the same method.

She didn’t believe he didn’t love her, and she didn’t believe the flimsy excuses he had fabricated for their breakup.

Shock flickered in Ethan’s eyes, but it disappeared as quickly as it came. His expression turned cold once more, his gaze filled with scorn as he looked at her stubborn face. His thin lips parted with a sneer. "Fine. I’ll grant your wish if you’re not afraid to die."

Lily felt a sharp pain in her chest as his icy gaze pierced her.

This wasn’t him. This wasn’t the Ethan she knew...

Why had he suddenly transformed into someone who humiliated her with every word, who dismissed and scorned her with every glance?

Swallowing the lump in her throat, Lily stood unwavering in front of his car. Her reddened eyes stared straight at his cold face, her determination unyielding.

He couldn’t even shoot her in a game of laser tag. How could he bring himself to run her over? He loved her. He had to.

The atmosphere grew tense.

Ethan didn’t move the car, and Lily didn’t step aside.

The two of them remained locked in a standoff.

Ethan’s glare deepened, the mocking smile on his lips fading. His gaze turned chillingly cold as he suddenly reversed the car.

The silver-blue sports car roared forward, speeding straight toward her.

Lily instinctively closed her eyes.

"Lily!" Alex’s panicked voice rang out.

Bang—

The impact she had braced for never came. Instead, she felt herself being lifted off the ground. Someone had grabbed her around the waist, pulling her to the ground.

When she opened her eyes, she saw Ethan’s car speeding past her like the wind, not once looking back.

He had really driven toward her?!

Why?

Did he no longer care whether she lived or died?

Ethan wouldn’t do this. He wouldn’t...

Lily tried to get up and chase after him, but Alex’s voice stopped her. "Lily, have some dignity."

Dignity?

No. She didn’t care about dignity. She only cared about Ethan. She couldn’t let things end so ambiguously...

That was the only thought left in her mind.

"Ah..."

A pained groan came from behind her. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Lily turned to see Alex on the ground, clutching his arm. Blood seeped through his fingers.

"Alex!" Lily’s eyes widened in shock. She hesitated for a moment before rushing to his side. Only after confirming she had no injuries on her hands did she dare to help him up. "Are you okay?!"

"..." Alex struggled to his feet, his face pale.

Lily supported him, then turned to the stunned security guard. "Call an ambulance!"

"Oh—oh, right..."

"Don’t worry. It’s just a scrape from the fall," Alex said weakly.

"I’m sorry. I..." It was all her fault.

She had never imagined there would come a moment when Ethan would drive toward her without hesitation and Alex... would save her.

"Don’t do something like that again. It’s dangerous," Alex said, wincing as he held his injured arm.

"I’m sorry."

Apologies were all Lily could offer. Every time, she seemed to drag Alex into her mess...

She really has a connection with hospitals. Time and again, she found herself back in one.

Alex sat quietly as the doctor treated and bandaged his arm.

Lily stood to the side, holding his jacket. Watching the doctor use tweezers to remove tiny fragments of gravel from his wound only deepened her guilt.

"Lily, it’s just a minor injury," Alex said with a gentle smile, his soft voice meant to comfort her.

"Alex—"

The door swung open. Alice Johnson stormed in, her high heels clacking against the floor. She rushed past Lily to stand before Alex, her face filled with worry as she examined his injury. "What happened to you?!"

Lily stepped back, silent.

"How are you here?" Alex asked, surprised by Alice’s sudden appearance.

"I called her," Lily explained.

Alice glanced at Lily, her expression complicated. "Thank you for letting me know."

"I should be the one apologizing. He got hurt saving me," Lily said calmly.

She had called Alice to the hospital?

Alex looked at Lily, his gaze also tinged with complexity.

"Saving you?!" Alice stared at Lily and then turned to Alex, her eyes filled with unspoken questions.

Even now... he still couldn’t let Lily go?

"Here’s your jacket. I’ll take my leave now," Lily said, handing the jacket to Alice before politely excusing herself.

"Lily... where will you go?" Alex called after her.

Lily paused, feeling Alice’s gaze shifting between them. Forcing a faint smile, she replied, "Don’t worry about me. Goodbye."

Alex wanted to say more, but Lily had already walked out.

As Alex turned back to Alice, he gave her a reassuring smile and took her hand. "Don’t overthink it," he said.

Alice watched Lily’s retreating figure, then nodded after a moment.

Lily used the card Tommy had given her to pay Alex’s medical fees before leaving the hospital alone.

She didn’t need to think twice to know the card held enough money to buy a house, a car, and hire staff... but what good would that do?

She had no idea where to go or what to do.

Standing on the bustling street, surrounded by strangers, Lily felt utterly alone. No purpose. No hope.

She had nothing left.

The image of Ethan’s cold, determined face as he slammed the accelerator was still fresh in her mind...
