Chapter 27: Rejection

There’s no denying it, as the eldest son, Xu Minghui holds considerable sway over Li Caixia and her husband. With Xu Minghui speaking up, the two had no choice but to abandon those unrealistic plans.

"How am I supposed to explain this to your third aunt? I already promised her," Li Caixia said, feeling a headache coming on.

"Just tell her you couldn’t borrow the money, that’s all. As for grandparents, I think they might chip in," Xu Mumu suddenly felt a bit of a headache too.

There must be a trap here. The Old Xu Family has been accumulating money over the years, and Xu Mumu guessed it must be quite a sum.

"I’ll talk to your grandparents tonight," Xu Hai took on the task.

Knowing there’s likely a problem here, they couldn’t let the third family take the money. He also needed to give that fool a good stomp or two.

"Thanks, Dad," Xu Mumu said with a cheerful smile, sitting beside Xu Hai and giving him a shoulder rub.

Although Xu Hai had his calculations, at least he could still listen to reason regarding major issues.

"Right here, too," Xu Hai said, enjoying the moment.

"Get up and quickly go talk to Dad and Mom, so they don’t get swindled by the third family. Let them figure out their own finances. Isn’t his father-in-law always bragging about being so capable?" Li Caixia smacked Xu Hai on the back.

"What’s the rush? You know my mom, she won’t easily part with money," Xu Hai said smugly, proud of his knowledge of his own mother.

"Oh, come on, the third family does have some skills. They nearly convinced us, surely Mom and Dad are considering it too," Li Caixia had her own firm understanding of her in-laws.

"Dad, go talk to them earlier, remind Grandpa and Grandma. I’m worried that the third uncle and aunt will get tricked," Xu Mumu said seriously. She had done her part in warning them, if the third family still insisted on walking into the trap, they couldn’t blame her.

"What’s the point of reminding them? Better they end up deep in debt," Li Caixia scoffed.

"Mom and Dad, if third uncle and aunt lose everything, where are they going to stay when they come back? Are we supposed to support them too?" Xu Mumu said helplessly, wondering why her parents always focused on immediate benefits.

"No way, if that’s the case, I’ll have to insist on splitting the family," Li Caixia exploded at the thought, not even being fond of the second and fourth families, let alone the idea of the third when they managed to make money; she could at least somewhat admire that.

"Our daughter is really something, or else we would’ve been fooled by the third family. I’ll go find Dad now," Xu Hai said, climbing out of bed. Although he didn’t want to remind the third family either, if they fell on hard times, the old couple certainly wouldn’t just stand by. Going now might even earn him favor, maybe the old couple would appreciate him more.

Watching Xu Hai strut off, Xu Mumu found it a little amusing.

"What? You’re not buying it anymore?" Xu Hai went to find Old Xu, and Li Caixia went to find Lin Juan. Lin Juan looked at Li Caixia with wide eyes, wasn’t this already agreed upon? How could it suddenly change? The Li Family still had some money, while the families of the two sister-in-laws from the second and fourth branches were relatively poor, which is why she thought of targeting the Li Family.

"Yeah, we can’t come up with the money either. This afternoon my son Minghui went to visit my mother’s side of the family to ask, but my brothers couldn’t lend us any money, so we thought about it and decided to forget it," Li Caixia said with much reluctance, using Xu Minghui’s trip to the county to pick up Xu Mumu as an excuse to make it seem like he went to Old Li’s family.

"Sister-in-law, can’t you reconsider? That’s a big house in the county," Lin Juan said anxiously. No way could the main family pull out, otherwise, where else would they find the money to buy such a good house? Even if it meant living under the same roof with the main family, she could endure it.

"I know. I want it too. You, as a third sister-in-law, a city person, don’t understand how hard it is for us in the countryside to save up some money. Saving over a thousand dollars isn’t easy. Sorry, third sister-in-law," Li Caixia said with a smiling face, showing no real apology.

In her heart, she thought that the third family was indeed not up to any good, trying to scam her. It’s just too comfortable now without having to pay back that money.

Seeing Lin Juan so anxious, Li Caixia’s own frustration disappeared. Let Lin Juan worry about it now.

Xu Mumu returned to her room, took out the apples from her backpack, six of them, with an additional two dollars, plus seventy cents previously saved. She considered herself to have a bit of money now.

Xu Mumu carefully hid the money, then placed the apples back into her backpack, before sneaking them into her parents’ room.

By now, Xu Hai was still talking with the old folks, leaving only Li Caixia in the room, mending Xu Minglei’s clothes.

"Daughter, what are you coming over for?" Li Caixia looked up as Xu Mumu approached, then continued sewing.

"Mom, look what my classmate’s mom gave me, for you to keep," Xu Mumu said with a bright smile.

"Apples, and such big ones," Li Caixia accidentally pricked her finger with a needle, but the pain faded as she stared at the items Xu Mumu took out.

Such large, red apples must be expensive. Just smelling them made her swallow instinctively; they must taste as good as they look.

"Mom, hide them away, we can savor them slowly and sneak a couple to Grandpa and Grandma tonight," Xu Mumu suggested with a smile. She really loved this little home and was willing to dote on her mom.

"Wouldn’t two be too many? Just one should be fine," Li Caixia said as she swiftly took the bag from Xu Mumu, then stored the apples at the bottom of the cabinet, ensuring no aroma leaked out.

"We have plenty left. If Dad really talks Grandma and Grandpa out of it, they’ll feel bad too, it’s all family. Giving them two apples will cheer them up," Xu Mumu said with a smile, dreaming of the day when she could earn money, making such treats easier to get.

"Alright, alright, I’ll listen to you this time. But don’t go throwing money around next time," Li Caixia playfully scolded Xu Mumu, her heart filled with delight at her daughter’s competence.

"Don’t worry, Mom, I definitely won’t," Xu Mumu said with a cheerful grin. She knew generosity required having something to give first. Besides, she wasn’t overly generous, she only gave snacks to the two little ones from the fourth family because she liked them; they were well-behaved and sensible.
