70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman-Chapter 48: Reward
"Cuihua is really too polite." Madam Chen exclaimed.
"That’s ten pounds of meat, if it were me, I’d be just as courteous." Li Caixia pouted. These past few days, when visiting Liu Cuixia, she was very enthusiastic and offered her quite a few pumpkin seeds.
With the two big white radishes sent by Tiedan, there’s an extra dish tonight – stir-fried radish strips.
The radish strips taste pretty good, though there’s not much seasoning.
"Grandma, can we have some pickles?" Xu Mumu said while eating and chatting with Madam Chen.
"Mumu wants to eat pickles, huh?" Madam Chen chuckled.
"Radishes are better as pickles," Xu Mumu said.
"If Mumu wants them, I’ll get the pickle jar ready and make some tomorrow," Madam Chen agreed. Pickles are great with meals and can last quite a while.
"I want pickled cucumbers and sour beans." Xu Minglei looked brightly at his grandma.
"Where am I supposed to find beans for you now?" Madam Chen rolled her eyes. Recently, there have been plenty of cucumbers and radishes, which make good choices for pickling.
"Then I want sour cucumbers." Xu Minglei pouted.
The next day, when Xu Mumu got back from school, she saw things were chaotic at home. Xu Mumu raised an eyebrow, wondering what had happened now.
"Who told you to bother Madam Song?" Li Caixia looked at her eldest son with a headache, feeling like her lungs were about to explode. This brat not only took back that ten yuan but also beat up Madam Song’s son, and brought back several pounds of flour as well.
If these things were obtained from someone else, Li Caixia would be thrilled.
But Li Caixia always held a certain fear for those who could supposedly tell fortunes. If Madam Song got angry, there might be repercussions.
"Mom, I told you, they’re frauds. They’ve been reported and even spent some time in jail before." Xu Minghui said, feeling quite helpless.
"How could that be? Madam Song told me things correctly; she must have real skills." Li Caixia was still unwilling to believe.
"She didn’t say much the first time, right? It was only the second time that she told you everything, and that’s because she had her son investigate in advance." Xu Minghui scratched his ear; his mom’s voice was quite loud. It’s a pity that his usually sharp mom couldn’t see through Madam Song’s petty tricks.
"That seems to be the case." Li Caixia was stunned, thinking carefully, realizing she was indeed deceived.
Xu Mumu listened for a while and understood; she decided not to get involved, instead taking the younger ones to study. Her brother had basically resolved the minor issue.
Her mom isn’t dumb; she’s quite sharp.
"Sis, aren’t we eating flour buns tonight?" Xu Minglei looked expectantly at Xu Mumu.
"Do you think mom would be willing to use the flour?" Xu Mumu smirked slightly, having figured out her mom’s character after being home for a while.
Flour is something only used during New Year’s at their house; if they eat flour, it’s always mixed with coarse grains.
"Even mixed with coarse grains, it’s better than all coarse grain pancakes." Xu Minglei licked his lips.
Xu Tao and Xu Jiaojiao were a bit envious. They all knew Madam Song. Somehow, he managed to get money back from her and even brought back more flour; eldest brother truly has skills.
"That’s true." Xu Mumu smiled lightly.
"By the way, did you get your exam results?" Xu Mumu asked with a smile, changing the topic. Knowing their mom’s character, even if the flour was mixed with coarse grains, there would still be very little used each time; it’s better not to expect too much.
"Yes, sis, you were right. Our math teacher even praised me." Xu Minglei said proudly. Although he’s often praised by the teacher, this time, the mid-term exam felt especially satisfying to him.
It was this exam that made him realize his grades really improved; he even ranked in the top ten of the class.
"Sis, you said if I got into the top ten, you’d give me five cents." Xu Minglei’s eyes sparkled as he looked at Xu Mumu.
"Here, take it." Xu Mumu handed out the money readily.
"Wow, thanks, sis. I knew you were the best." Xu Minglei was overjoyed and couldn’t help but show off the money to a group of kids.
"Keep it up next time; if you improve in the final exam, I’ll give you a dollar. How about that?" Xu Mumu pinched the little guy’s happily smiling face, knowing money seemed to be the best motivator for him, and it’s proving effective.
"Really?" Xu Minglei’s eyes shone even brighter. With money, he could buy delicious food or toys.
"What, are my words not trustworthy?" Xu Mumu raised an eyebrow slightly.
"No, it’s just hard to believe." Xu Minglei happily put the money into his bag, gaining more interest in studying. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
"Sis, why am I not your real brother?" Seeing Xu Minglei’s improvement and his monetary reward, Tiedan felt incredibly jealous.
"Haven’t I treated you well? Every time there’s something tasty, I bring it back to you guys." Xu Mumu rubbed Tiedan’s head, clearly understanding what he meant.
"My big sister and second sister don’t like me." Tiedan pouted, wondering why there was such a big difference between people.
The elder sisters Tiedan mentioned are his cousins; Tiedan’s family only has him.
The Zhao family is larger than Old Xu Family and has more brothers, so Tiedan has several uncles who all live together.
It’s just that Tiedan’s parents are similar to Xu Mumu’s parents—fond of leisure and gossiping, and Tiedan is rather mischievous, so in the eyes of more honest folks, this family isn’t likable.
"They just don’t know your worth; if they don’t like you, so be it. Anyway, you don’t play with them." Xu Mumu said with a smile.
Tiedan’s elder and second sisters are older than her and are preparing for marriage and dowries, having no time to manage their cousin.
Knowing that Xu Minglei did very well on his exams, dinner added two boiled eggs, one for Xu Mumu and one for Xu Minglei.
"Grandma, why did you give me a boiled egg?" Xu Mumu asked helplessly. The family only had one chicken, and every day they collected one egg. These eggs were meant to be sold, to buy cooking oil and salt, contributing significantly to the family income.
