Chapter 42 -36 You’re like a duck

She felt somewhat unable to initiate conversation with Wen Yangzhi, her head bowed to the comic book, fingers anxiously picking at the fabric of her skirt, not realizing that beneath the soft flow of the hem lay the slightly tougher denim of Wen Yangzhi’s jeans, and that the tangible feeling of the fabric was due to it being stretched over Wen Yangzhi’s thigh.

Wen Yangzhi extended a finger, slipping it beneath her wrist, gently lifting her wrist upward:

“Stop picking at brother, talk instead.”

She let out a surprised “Ah?” only then realizing what she had been doing, quickly withdrawing her hand, her whole body feeling scorched by an invisible fire.

She, she didn’t mean to do it.

Yun Yuwan, both embarrassed and awkwardly uncomfortable, murmured, “Hong Sheng brother, I didn’t do it on purpose.”

Wen Yangzhi was somewhat surprised, finding the girl a bit inexplicable, unclear about the messy thoughts in her mind, but he chuckled lightly, “Is using a qualifying noun a special habit of your otaku culture?”

She was mortified, clumsy, and at a loss for words, “I heard your auntie and the others calling you that… If you don’t like it, I won’t call you that.”

Wen Yangzhi turned a page and glanced at her, something crossing his mind, softly saying:

“It’s fine; you should indeed call me Hong Sheng brother.”

She suddenly looked up, gazing at his handsome and noble face.

He resembled a raven.

Ravens are solitary and larger than crows, with similarly ink-black plumage, yet with a fluffier feather coat.

Wen Yangzhi’s hair and eyebrows were dark and thick, like wild grasses; his temples framed by a clean, square hairline, lending him an air of stern maturity; his eyelashes as dense as raven feathers, bestowing him with a strong hormonal allure, somewhere between a boy and a young man, wild and defiant, yet his expression and demeanor were so calm and proper that one dare not intrude.

…I should have been calling him Hong Sheng brother all along.

Is that also how brother sees it? That their relationship should be one where she calls him Hong Sheng brother.

More distant, yet more intimate.

If it weren’t for the loss of her parents, that’s how she would indeed call him, perhaps not as familiar, yet allowed to have a frank and slightly more ambiguous relationship.

Noticing her distraction, Wen Yangzhi, with a neutral tone, reminded her, “Anything bothering you, anything you want to talk to me about?”

She felt a bit embarrassed to speak up; they were all trivial matters.

Seeing her silence, Wen Yangzhi suddenly asked, “Want some cake?”

She was puzzled, “…Why are you suddenly talking about cake?”

He, however, looked intently at her, “Didn’t you faint because of low blood sugar?”

She was somewhat embarrassed, “Yes…”

Wen Yangzhi took out his phone from his pocket, dialed the butler’s number, and placed the phone on her lap.

The call connected immediately.

Wen Yangzhi spoke distantly, yet with a strong sense of separation, “Have the kitchen deliver desserts to Jing Building’s study room door.”

This was the first time the butler had heard Young Master Wen request desserts, promptly inquiring respectfully, “What kind of desserts would you like?”

The hand that Wen Yangzhi had around her waist loosened, then the next second, gently patted her back, “Speak up, they’re asking you, what do you want?”

Yun Yuwan felt a touch embarrassed, “Then a chocolate cake, please.”

The butler seemed shocked, hearing the usually disdained Miss Yun’s voice at Young Master Wen’s place, and moreover at Jing Building.

Miss Yun is allowed into Jing Building?

Without waiting for the butler to respond, Wen Yangzhi reminded, “Did you hear that?”

The butler quickly recovered, “Heard it, I’ll have the pastry chef prepare it immediately.”

Wen Yangzhi hung up directly, “Have you been bullied at school these days?”

“Yeah,” she was reluctant to open up.

Wen Yangzhi slightly lowered his gaze to her, “May I listen?”

After a moment’s hesitation, Yun Yuwan opened her mouth.

“During the theme ball before, they said my dress was ugly,” she remembered and bowed her head, “they said I looked like a duck.”

Wen Yangzhi was straightforward, “Wear it for brother to see.”

“What?” She was taken aback.

He simply told her, “Go put it on now.”

Yun Yuwan felt like she was being sent away, her nervousness apparent, “Can I come back in after I’ve changed?”

“You can,” Wen Yangzhi replied crisply, “and you can bring in the cake from the study room door on your way back.”

Yun Yuwan felt reassured, as she left Jing Building, she couldn’t help but skip and hop; Wen Yangzhi saw her from the window, bouncing like a spring.

She went back to change into that skirt, cautiously reopening the study room door.

A light blue coarse strap butterfly dress, the skirt ending just above her thighs, revealing the girl’s fair and slender legs, symmetric and straight, with multiple layers of white petticoat poofing beneath the blue dress.

It really was a bit like Donald Duck’s poofy white rear.

Indeed duck-like, but a cute little duck.

As she moved closer, the bow on her dress bounced with her steps, like caramel sea salt ice cream, or a sky-blue sea salt cupcake.

Her hair woven with a matching printed ribbon into a slanted fishtail braid.

She seemed like the incarnate image of a girl from a comic book, a living embodiment of a little girl, without a hint of difference.

More vibrant than the florist’s daughter in the number eighteen street comic in his hand.

At this moment, she seemed to come alive from the palm of his hand.

She most likely dressed herself as a character from the book, but unconsciously prettier than the character, as lovely and delicate as a blooming flower.

Feeling apprehensive, Wen Yangzhi blandly commented, “Not ugly.”

She fumbled, “Is it just not ugly?”

Finally, brother spoke up, “It’s very pretty.”

She knew it!

Hong Sheng brother has good taste.

Wen Yangzhi extended his hand, “Come here.”

Yun Yuwan felt slightly self-conscious, extending her hand onto his large one, sitting next to brother, who still wrapped his arm around her as they looked at the comic book.
