A Hospital in Another World?-Chapter 799: Taking Cirella to Teach at the Temple?
Garrett Nordmark emerged from the dragon’s nest covered in dirt and debris. He soothed and consoled Master Norwood, the alchemist, and compensated him with a promise to purchase a new alchemy cauldron and a batch of corresponding potions using the funds from the Mage Tower.
Will there be such sudden explosions in future experiments?
Garrett could only chuckle at that thought. Training, meditating, and studying under even the faintest dragon’s presence was akin to mountain climbing with weights—a considerable benefit for mental fortitude. As for unexpected accidents?
Well, occasional losses were inevitable, just as not all experiments were successful.
"However, there is another issue," Ms. Anita Winvey mentioned as she tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, her expression calm.
"In the basement of the Mage Tower, where we cultivate large amounts of Penicillium and Streptomyces, prolonged exposure to the dragon’s essence could potentially mutate them, altering or nullifying their medicinal effects."
Cirella Moonlight Fress Greta shifted uncomfortably, wanting to assure that she "wouldn’t leak any essence while sleeping" or "would try to control it." Garrett patted her arm and smiled at the naturalist priest:
"The production of penicillin and streptomycin, once standardized, indeed doesn’t need to be confined within the Mage Tower. How about we set up a dedicated area for mass production at the research institute behind the hospital or in the hospital’s Mage Tower?"
Anita was slightly tempted but also felt it was a pity. Once the production conditions were fully optimized, she wouldn’t need to oversee them constantly.
Just finding a room with constant temperature and humidity, having an apprentice cast growth spells regularly, and having an alchemist periodically extract and convert the solutions into medicines would suffice. As for further research, that might happen more at the hospital...
"Now you have two research directions," Garrett observed her expressions and continued with a smile:
"One is to move the production facilities to the research institute behind the hospital or continue in the hospital’s Mage Tower while also trying to discover other antibiotics. Trust me, following this approach, you could definitely discover dozens more."
There were plenty of antibiotics to be extracted from microbial cultures besides penicillin and streptomycin—erythromycin, neomycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, various cephalosporins...
If one traveled extensively and was fortunate enough, perhaps even vancomycin could be found. As for meropenem, that was a synthetic antibiotic.
Given the current chemical capabilities of the Magic Council, perhaps after becoming a legend and persevering for a few centuries, he might see it?
Anita’s expression shifted subtly before she nodded resolutely. Although unsure where Nordmark’s confidence came from, she believed that similar organisms existed in the vast world.
She had already discovered a new potion on her own. If she continued steadfastly on this path and found eight to ten different potions, although Nordmark was the pioneer, her status would be unshakable!
"Another direction is to continue targeted research here at the Mage Tower. Let’s see how these little creatures change under the influence of the dragon’s essence..."
Having a constant influence to induce directed mutations in organisms was a boon that biological researchers could only dream of!
In the past, biologists used ultraviolet light, radiation sources, or even sent things into space, all at great expense, just to see if "this thing would develop strange traits."
Now, with a dragon’s nest above, it was an opportunity they couldn’t even beg for!
Ah, if Anita wasn’t interested, should he hire another team to work on this project?
"I want to do this too!"
Anita’s eyes sparkled. She blurted out and then stepped back slightly:
"It seems... too busy..."
"No worries, go hire some people." Garrett was confident:
"It’s already the end of the year, and we’ve stocked up enough for next year’s famine. The priests of the God of Nature’s congregation should be free to help. Find some to work or, if you can handle it, hire a few high-ranking ones too—"
Garrett allocated the budget, launched the project, and left the rest to her. How the project was set up and how many people were hired, Anita would naturally submit a report:
Project directions and progress, he would attend weekly team meetings. If there were any concerns or need for directional changes, he could influence at any time?
Huh, without realizing it, he had become the boss of a large laboratory...
After settling matters at his own Mage Tower, Garrett took Cirella and started a regular workday routine the next day. In the morning, first to the hospital, visiting the maternity ward, conducting surgeries;
Later in the morning, he sat in the outpatient department waiting for new cases. If none, he would delve into magical frameworks and write papers;
Lunch was with the necromancers, followed by a team meeting to discuss progress on the cholera vaccine;
In the afternoon, straight to the Temple of the God of War...
Bishop Seiren, greeting at the entrance, saw a giant elk over two meters tall with antlers spread over four meters wide, pulling a carriage rushing towards him. Nordmark alighted from the carriage and then—
Turned around, extending his hand. A silver-haired elven lady with a blank expression was helped by him, slowly stepping out of the carriage. As she walked, she muttered:
"s wave... t wave... r wave... atrial fibrillation... ventricular fibrillation..."
"Who is this?"
Bishop Seiren quickly approached to inquire her name, requesting an introduction. While Garrett had no intention of formally introducing her, he casually gestured and warmly said:
"This is Miss Cirella Moonlight Fress Greta, my friend. This time, she’s assisting me in teaching the defibrillation spell."
Bishop Seiren promptly bowed. Cirella turned her gaze towards him and nodded absentmindedly, her eyes still somewhat vacant. Garrett, slightly embarrassed, nodded:
"Sorry for the wait. Let’s get started then?"
The Temple of the God of War had arranged a chapel on the left side of the rear hall for Garrett’s teaching. According to his request, a demon pig was prepared for the demonstration.
A group of brawny priests from the God of War, certainly more than capable in strength, didn’t even need Bernard to make a move; they swarmed up:
Lifted the demon pig, belly-up, onto the platform and tied it securely. The scene looked less like a teaching moment and more like a pig slaughter.
Bernard, having nothing to do, sat in the first row’s corner, while Cirella, lost in thought, stood on the other side. She had only learned after coming out that Garrett had advanced the magic that had saved her to a practical level:
"How did it get so advanced so quickly? You didn’t wait for me to research together!"
While she said this, Cirella knew it was just a saying. When a patient needed treatment, Garrett would definitely not hold back a spell just to wait for her.
Her complaint was merely a way to make a request:
"I don’t care! You have to teach me! You absolutely must teach me!"
"Alright, alright... Then, these papers, materials, explanations, take a look at them first..."
Thus, Cirella had been studying tirelessly up until now, her mind a whirlwind of information as she alighted from the carriage. Until she heard Garrett clear his throat and inquire:
"Ahem, have you pre-studied the materials?"
Pre-studied!
Memorized by rote!
Completely baffled!
Cirella shrank back half a step, her gaze drifting to the priests of the God of War on her left, each answering in a jumbled, troubled tone:
"Pre-studied..."
Looking at them, she felt just as dizzy and overwhelmed as when she read too much.
Cirella secretly felt a bit pleased. On the platform, Garrett slightly smiled and conjured a display of light:
【Silent Illusion】sketched out a heart, cut horizontally to reveal its four chambers. Aorta, pulmonary artery, pulmonary veins, superior and inferior vena cava, all were present.
"Come on, who will first explain, during a heartbeat, where the blood flows from and to?"
A small group shrank back...
The first question, Garrett decided to give the Temple of the God of War some face by calling on a confident-looking bishop to answer. Fortunately, his response was adequate, but the following questions became increasingly difficult:
"Which of these ECGs represents atrial fibrillation?"
"Which represents ventricular fibrillation?"
"Why shouldn’t defibrillation be immediately followed by another shock, but rather a set of chest compressions?"
"Forget it..." After a series of questions, Garrett confirmed one thing: these priests of the God of War, although they might have memorized the relevant knowledge, were far from understanding it thoroughly. He waved his hand:
"Let’s do an experiment, demonstrating the effect of electricity on the heartbeat. Cirella!"
"Ah!"
The silver dragon girl happily jumped forward. Garrett positioned the heart electrodes, set up the battery pack, and demonstrated to everyone:
"First, we let this current pass through the limbs..."
Positive and negative poles, poked onto the demon pig’s body. The pig, shaved clean from black to white, grunted twice without reaction. Garrett threw up an ECG, raising his voice:
"Next, we let the current directly pass through the heart—via the electrodes inserted into the heart. Everyone, watch the ECG, three, two, one!" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
As the electrode touched, the ECG immediately transformed into a series of scattered,
rapid waves. Garrett removed the electrode, looked around:
"Compared to the defibrillation spell, the efficiency of 【Healing Fatal Wounds】 is not high. Cirella, demonstrate it for everyone..."
"Okay!"
The silver dragon girl lightly waved her hand, casting a milky white light directly onto the demon pig’s heart. The ECG instantly normalized, and the demon pig grunted a few times, struggling mightily, almost overturning the table that bound it!
Garrett: "......"
That was a miscalculation.
Cirella’s healing spells had become much stronger after her advancement!
