Chapter 28: Chaos

" He did what?" Mango yelled in a whisper, checking behind her back to make sure she wasn’t heard.

" Yeah! I wasn’t there, but I heard! " Dax shrugged.

"He slapped her in front of that Velor? And she ran away? Without a word? " Mango repeated, clutching her tablet. Dax nodded, " That’s what I heard! "

"From whatever much I have seen in her, she would have slapped Kieran back as well. But you say she went away without a word??" It seemed like Mango was contemplating something.

Dax shifted on his feet, glancing around. "You think she is on to something or what?"

"I don’t know! I just don’t like this feeling of unease! I just hope it’s not what I am thinking..."

Just then the heavy double doors slammed open.

They froze.

Kieran stormed in like a hurricane, hair wild, breathing erratic. His eyes burned...not just with rage, but something else. Something far more dangerous.

Terror.

"I CAN’T FEEL AUTUMN!" he roared.

Both Mango and Dax recoiled, stunned into silence at what he just said.

"What?" Mango whispered, almost dropping her device.

"It’s like she is GONE! I have looked everywhere! But I can’t fucking feel her dammit! Our link...our bond...it’s like...it’s gone cold. And I fucking can’t see her anywhere...like she has vanished into air!" Kieran’s chest heaved with every breath. "Where the hell is she hiding??!"

He turned on Mango, his eyes bloodshot. "You are closest to her! She trusts you, I have seen! Did she tell you something?! Are you covering for her?!"

"No...I swear. I haven’t seen her since she took your medicine.Kieran, I wouldn’t lie to you...not on this at least!"

"Then where IS SHE?!" Kieran punched the wall so hard the wood splintered, sending a startled omega darting away down the hallway.

Dax stepped in quickly. "Alpha, calm down. We can figure this out...if she broke the bond, it means she is up to something..."

" NOOO! YOU FUCKING IDIOT! She would never break our bond. You know nothing about us. You have no idea! " Dax could see Kieran was fighting the urge to strangle him. " It’s just... " Kieran breathed, heavy! " It’s that fucking Selene bitch, I think... she tampered with my wolf... Or worse... our bond! I was so terrified when I realized Valor could feel her but not I. I... fuck... I shouldn’t have... I lost control... fuck... I am trying to pull it all together! Mango... " His eyes pinned the healer with an earnest plea. " Help me track her... I am... " He added with the tiniest hint of a whisper, " scared! "

Suddenly, before Mango could respond,a panting patrol guard burst into the room, covered in sweat and mud.

"Alpha!!!" he turned to Dax, " Beta! We have spotted movement near the northern woods...beyond the tree line...heading straight for the lakefront!"

Kieran’s head snapped around. "Fucking shit! Bloodfangs? They have a death wish! I will annihilate their entire generation,fucking...How many?"

"Too many to count. They seem fast, organized, they are not rogues, sir, definitely. But whether they are Bloodfangs or not,we haven’t been able to identify yet. But something is off about them..."

Dax narrowed his eyes. "Formations?"

"Yes, sir. Like they are definitely part of a pack but... twisted. We have never seen eyes like that...and they were carrying bodies...dead bodies along with them. "

" Eyes? "

Before the gravity of those words could settle or be understood, another guard stumbled in right behind him, barely catching his breath.

"We just got word from inside Curzon territory. The Council...they staged a coup. The Curzons revolted. There has been... a breakdown, sir."

"Breakdown?" Kieran asked, his voice dropping dangerously low as he turned his body completely towards him, paying complete attention.

"They tried to,apparently, dismantle the Council. But the Council tore them apart. And now,the pack is scattering everywhere.Weird reports are flooding in Alpha. We don’t know which ones to believe."

" Weird reports like what? "

" Like they are bringing something with them. Reports of blackened veins, sickened wolves, entire units turned in minutes. Some are calling it a curse...and some reports say it’s a plague

Some say the Council has issued a hit list and most of their pack is on that list, including children. And there were even reports of the Council unleashing the Hounds after them."

The silence that followed was deafening.Yet it was too much chaos. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

Mango took a step back, her mouth open in horror. "This is definitely not good news. "

"No," Kieran growled, his eyes knitted, putting together pieces that no one else could see.

Dax was already tapping furiously into the pack’s Emergency MindLinks . "All units to alert. Fortify every border. I want lockdown procedures in effect across all sectors. No one in, no one out without direct authorization!"

"Sir?" the patrol guard asked, fear now evident in his eyes.

"If they are bringing this plague or curse or whatever commotion with them, they will definitely try to tap our borders." Dax said grimly, " ...make sure the chaos doesn’t cross into our lands."

Kieran’s fists clenched, his voice shaking with rage. " Damn it! Autumn! Where the fuck, are you? You better be safe! "

Alarms began to ring out across the pack. Warriors burst from the barracks, shifting mid run. Snarls and howls echoed in the distance. The lakefront would soon become a battlefield or a fortress.

And still, Autumn was nowhere to be found. But Kieran did not have any other choice. He could no longer feel her presence. There was no way he could tell where she was... or ever find her... if she didn’t want to be found.

" Dax, get a small unit ready and follow me to the northern borders! I need to check this mess out, myself ! "

(The Northern Woods – Blackmoon Territory)

Kieran galloped on horseback through the wet underbrush, mud flying beneath him, trees flashing by like shadows of a nightmare.

Rain lashed against his cloak and face, but he did not slow down. The patrol reports kept replaying in his head.

Dead wolves. Twisted eyes. Black veins...And Autumn.

His jaw clenched so tight it hurt. Fuck. Fuck. FUCK.

As the tree line thickened towards the northern borders, Kieran yanked the reins, bringing the steed to a sudden halt. The horse neighed, hooves skidding on slick leaves.

Something had caught his eye.

He jumped off the saddle and strode forward.

His boots sank into the earth as he stalked forward, his wolf snarling beneath his skin, claws flexing in anticipation.

His men scattered, fanning out in different directions.

Kieran lunged ahead, his vision sharpening, his senses, though still blocked from Autumn’s presence, could scan and perceive everything else, just fine.

Then he spotted it...a torn piece of fabric.

His heart stopped.

The same fabric Autumn had been wearing when she had stormed out.

"Spread out!Search pattern shift!Forget the patrol route. We look for Autumn." he barked at the handful of warriors behind him. Dax was yet to join him with his unit. Kieran had rushed. He could not wait.

"Fuck." His fingers clenched around it, his pulse thundering in his ears. She was here... no fuck, she was out in the middle of this chaos.

"AUTUMN!" His roar shook the trees, sending birds scattering into the storm. No answer. Just the howling wind and the distant scent of blood.

Kieran snarled, his wolf rippling under his skin. He slammed his fist into the nearest tree, splintering bark. "WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?!"

Still nothing.

" QUIT PLAYING, AUTUMN! IF YOU ARE MAD AT ME, COME TAKE IT OUT! COME ON OUT, NOW! FOOL! "

He lunged forward again, crushing branches underfoot, his breath coming in ragged, furious bursts.

Then his eyes caught movement.

His head snapped up.

He could see what looked like a small camp. Half hidden in the mist.Just where his border ended!

The stench of unnatural rot and blood hit him hard. Fuck! This was the same group! The reports weren’t fucking! They definitely brought something with them.

And then...he saw her.

Autumn?!

Her eyes searched the woods, like she knew he was near.

His lip curled into a snarl.

She was standing by one of them...her shoulders stiff, her hair soaked from the rain, her expression...he could not quite tell.

"AUTUMN!" he bellowed, his voice slicing through the forest like thunder. Every head snapped towards him.

She whirled, her eyes widening...shocked, relieved...a smile was about to escape before it faded...her expression instantly guarded.

He lunged, shifting mid leap, his wolf exploding from his skin. Fur gleaming under rain, muscles rippling, eyes glowing.

He slammed into the ground between Autumn and the few scattered men, his fangs bared, his growl shaking the earth.

He let out a terrifying growl before shifting back!

"SEND MY MATE BACK, CURZON!" His voice was louder, more terrifying than a thunderclap.

Autumn flinched, her hands lifting. "Kieran ,wait. I can explain..."

The man beside Autumn did not flinch at first. He simply stepped forward, dragging Autumn with him, gripping her arm hard.

"Uncle Jeffrey!" Autumn gasped, twisting and turning her head. "It’s alright! Let me talk to him...please..."

She did not finish.

In a single, horrifying motion, Jeffrey pulled her into him and pressed a jagged blade to her throat, turning towards Kieran with eyes full of manic calm.

"Not another step, Alpha," he said coldly. "Or she bleeds."

Kieran saw red.

"UNHAND HER," he growled, his voice deathly calm.

Autumn stiffened, her eyes flashing to Jeffrey. "Uncle Jeff...what the hell?! Let me go!You don’t wanna do this.Let me talk. I can help! "

Jeffrey’s grip tightened, his eyes wild, his breath ragged. "Stay back!" He snapped, dragging Autumn backward. "Or I swear to the Moon Goddess, I will slit her throat!"

Kieran’s vision tunneled. His wolf howled inside him, claws tearing at his control.

"You touch her," Kieran whispered, his voice dripping venom, "and I won’t just kill you. I will erase your entire fucking bloodline from this earth."

Jeffrey swallowed, his blade trembling. "You don’t understand...we have no choice!"

"I DON’T GIVE A FUCK!" Kieran roared, taking a step forward.

Autumn’s eyes locked onto his as if furious...warning?

"Kieran, STOP!" she shouted, her voice cutting through the storm. "They are not the enemy!"

"THEY ARE HOLDING A KNIFE TO YOUR THROAT!"

"Because they are TERRIFIED!" she snapped, her fingers digging into Jeffrey’s arm. "Uncle Jeff, drop the damn blade before he rips your head off!"

Jeffrey’s breath hitched, his eyes darting between Kieran and the trees behind them.

Kieran’s lips peeled back in a snarl. "Last warning, old man."

Then,a twig snapped.

Kieran’s head whipped around.

Shadows moved in the trees.

Jeffrey’s voice shook. "They are here."
