Chapter 129: Removing the Bees

"You..." Serena started, but was unable to finish.

Liz would cease to exist?! And to say it so casually too?! Was Liz not scared? Did it not fear becoming nothingness? Did it know the cost of making this deal?

"Don’t act so shocked." Liz added. "I knew the price. The Beast God made that clear to me."

"And you still..." Serena gaped at the system.

Liz nodded its head. "Yes. I don’t fear death... What I fear is dying with regrets. This gives me a chance to correct my regrets before I become nothingness."

Serena couldn’t imagine just accepting such a fate. But then again, if she became nothing, she wouldn’t have to worry about suffering ever again. And death wouldn’t seem so scary.

"Of course being erased from existence isn’t so bad." Liz mused. "At least then those that knew me would forget I existed. It’s sad... but as long as they don’t suffer I suppose I’m fine with it."

That didn’t help much, but she could understand where Liz was coming from. At least she could leave the world without having to worry about someone mourning her disappearance. They’d just forget about her.

Though she did still feel a bit off about the whole thing...

"Is there a way to stop that from happening?" Serena asked curiously.

She knew she was venturing into dangerous territory, but Liz was beginning to go on her. And Serena didn’t want to have the system completely disappear if there was a chance she could stop it.

"You’d probably have to make a deal with the Beast God about that." Liz joked. It was quiet for a moment before it added, "Seriously though, you don’t have to worry about it. I’ve accepted my fate already. So just focus on making this a good place that my brother can live in."

Serena shook her head at the kitten’s words. "You know in my world some would say you have a borderline brother complex."

"I think it’s more than that at this point, but sure." Liz muttered. "Anyway enough about all this depressing talk... I’m tired of it."

"Fine, I’ll stop." Serena murmured, even if she didn’t want to.

However, she knew Liz didn’t want to talk about it anymore. Probably not to give itself hope after accepting its eventual demise. Of course that didn’t stop Serena from forming an idea in her head from Liz’s comment.

She just wasn’t sure how to tell the system about it. Perhaps she would wait for now...

Once Theo had headed off to hunt the next morning, Serena quickly slipped Kiro’s winter clothing set among the other clothes before she moved to adding more salt to their salt pouch.

She didn’t refill it much, not wanting Theo to get suspicious of their suddenly increasing supply of salt. She’d just keep adding a bit more every morning and take directly from her supply whenever she was cooking.

Once they got more salt after trading would she then add a bigger amount of salt into their stash. Though, she was looking to keep her salt reward more as an emergency supply along with everything else in her subspace.

When she was done, she headed back out of the hut and made her way to the village center. Kiro was already there, the impatient cub running off when Theo was leaving.

She went straight to the Council’s hut, a little giddy about today. After all, they were going to finally be removing those bees and putting them in a new hive.

It would be a very important test run for her, even if she wasn’t the one doing the work. Based on what happened here, she would have to adjust their plans.

When she got there, she found the Council members were already there along with Finn and some unknown rabbit beastman. Who was covered head to toe in thick animal fur.

Serena quickly greeted them and was introduced to Zen, the rabbit beastman chosen for the task. Once introductions were done, she went over the plan with Zen.

She explained to him everything he needed to do, giving him tips on how to handle the bees and what the queen bee looked like.

She didn’t have high hopes on the beastman finding the queen bee, considering his way of identifying the queen bee was a crude drawing in the ground, but she told him nonetheless.

Because once the queen bee was in the new beehive, the other bees would naturally follow after her.

After she was done explaining how to go about removing the beehive and adding the combs into the new one, they practiced some hand signals. Serena and the Council members were going to be watching some distance away and Serena wanted to make sure that they had a proper way of communicating with Zen.

It took about an hour to go through everything and Serena’s throat felt dry by then. When everything was explained, they moved to where the bees were. They stopped some distance away while Zen continued like a man walking into battle.

In one hand he held the new beehive. Meanwhile, in the other he held a bunch of wooden sticks with fire burning on the top like a weapon, the smoke created meant to help make the bees drowsy. It was a crude plan, but her best option with what she had.

After moving the smoke all around the beehive, Zen put the sticks out so they wouldn’t become a fire hazard and gave the bees some time to settle before he began picking up the combs and placing them into new frames, wrapping them with vines to hold them into place.

Some bees buzzed around him, but thankfully they seemed to be of the gentle kind. Though Zen was looking a little pale even if he acted like it was nothing.

It took about three hours to fully remove the beehive, Zen sometimes having to use his bone knife to cut into some of the comb. He also had to drop some of the bees into the hive and it seemed luck was on their side because the bees soon swarmed the hive looking for their queen.

Which left them having to wait some time for them to settle. But soon enough, the beehive was ready to be moved to its new spot.
