A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 139: Finding True Happiness
"If that’s what you want, then we’re better off ending our arrangement now." Serena continued. "Because I won’t be able to return your feelings and you deserve someone who does."
Despite the words she was saying, a part of Serena didn’t want their relationship to end. But it would be wrong for her to keep stringing Theo along like that, allowing him to think he had a chance.
It was better to create a clear line before things got messy. Because she couldn’t do messy right now.
Theo stared at her, ears ringing with her words. A part of him knew she didn’t have the same feelings, which was why he never pushed for more, but it didn’t make hearing those words any easier.
Especially when he had not even made his feelings clear.
"Serena..." Liz suddenly called out. "Can we talk in your subspace for a second?"
Serena glanced at the snake wrapped around her upper arm and raised an eyebrow. She was in the middle of something and Liz suddenly wanted to talk?
"It’s important." Liz added. "I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t."
Serena sighed, eyeing Theo for a moment. The tiger beastman seemed to be in a daze, taking a moment to process her words from the looks of it. Guess she could spare a few seconds.
It wasn’t like her suddenly disappearing and reappearing would be the strangest thing that happened this evening. Thus, Serena entered her subspace before she had second thoughts.
And the moment Liz and her were inside the white room, Liz cried out, "What is your problem?! We were finally getting somewhere?! And you do this?! I want hands to throttle you!"
The system unwrapped itself and shifted into a kitten midleap off Serena’s arm as it spoke. Serena watched it go on a rant, wondering what Liz was on about.
"If this is about Theo, then it was the right thing to do." Serena stated. "We both know I can never like him back... Not like that..."
"And why not?" Liz retorted. "You clearly care enough about him to not want to lead him on and hurt him. Have you ever thought about being open to more than that? You get along well enough living together which is something many have a problem with. Why not seek more?"
Serena narrowed her eyes at Liz. "We both know why I can’t do that."
"No I don’t." Liz said, playing dumb.
"It’s because I need to go back..." Serena sighed, rubbing the side of her forehead in frustration. "Getting attached to others will only make things harder for me... and for them. Didn’t you say that the moment I leave this body, it dies.... I’m trying to limit the amount of people that are going to be affected by that."
Serena wasn’t even sure why she was explaining herself to Liz anyway. It clearly wouldn’t understand by the way it was acting. It didn’t know her thirst for revenge.
Because that was the only thing going for her.
Liz went quiet for some time, staring at Serena straight in the eye. Neither one moved for some time until Liz turned its head away, breaking eye contact first.
It then sighed, "Have you ever thought of maybe giving that up... You have a second chance at life. Why not use it to make new memories? Good ones filled with love."
"Liz we’ve been over this-" Serena started.
But Liz snapped and exclaimed, "You get your revenge and then what?! You go back to that horrible life, adding to your pain and continuing your own suffering. If I didn’t know any better I’d say you enjoy the pain!"
"You know I hate it!" Serena gritted her teeth, annoyance burning through her.
Because as much as she wanted to deny it, a part of her knew Liz was right. Apart from revenge, there was nothing else left for her in that world. Just bad memories and a whole lot of pain.
"Well then why are you trying to give up happiness?!" Liz questioned. "Your chance is right there and you’re destroying it as we speak. Most people would do anything for this kind of chance and all you think about is some petty revenge on some bastard that doesn’t even deserve the time or energy."
Liz then added with a softer tone, "I know you got burnt once... But you can’t let that stop you, Serena. You need to take that leap and find your happiness. Otherwise you’ll just keep repeating the same mistakes and never heal... And I can’t watch you do that."
Serena bit her lip at those words, not sure what to say. Liz had broken through her weak resolve, splitting her open to her core. Showing that this wasn’t just about getting revenge.
Rather it was her bigger fear of getting burnt again as Liz put it. She was destroying her own happiness because she didn’t want to risk getting hurt.
"Look... I’m not saying to accept Theo’s feelings." Liz stated. "Don’t force yourself to do that. But you also shouldn’t hide your own feelings. You care about him, maybe as a friend right now, but there’s also a chance it may be as a lover. I can’t say that for you. You need to look deep within yourself and decide that. I’m just tired of you being dumb!"
"I don’t... know if I can do that..." Serena finally murmured. "Can I really... just give it up?"
"Yes you can." Liz said. "Living out a good life is also a form of revenge, you know. Maybe he won’t see your happiness, but what matters is that you are happy and can shove it in his face when you meet again in hell."
"What do you know about hell?" Serena jokingly asked.
"Quite a bit actually. I’ve been reading on that internet." Liz answered before going serious again. "That aside, you need to think over my words and perhaps hold off rejecting Theo. Unless you can one hundred percent confirm that you feel nothing for him and wouldn’t be upset if he just left."
Well, Liz got her there. Maybe she couldn’t quite say her feelings were romantic, but she couldn’t deny that she did feel something for him. Care for him in some way.
"I hate you." Serena grumbled immaturely, hunching down to the ground.
"Sure. I’m still right though." Liz rolled its eyes at her.
The room fell silent once more until Serena broke it a few minutes later. "Hey Liz."
"What is it, Serena?"
"Do you think... the system can um.. erase memories?" Serena asked sheepishly, lifting her head to gaze at the kitten.
Liz gave her a knowing look before it said, "Nope. You need to fix that mess yourself. The system can’t help you with that. Perhaps next time you’ll think before you do something stupid."
"Urgh..." Serena groaned, wondering what she was going to do now.
Theo was probably going to think she was crazy for retracting her words, but Serena knew she had to fix that mess. If she wanted to actually go with Liz’s idea that was. She was still anxious about it, but she had to try.
There was just one thing.
"Liz..." Serena called out once more.
"What is it now?" Liz asked.
"If you also had a chance to live again... would you take it?" Serena questioned, an idea forming in her head. "You know... living in another world..."
She had thought about this before when Liz told her it would die once all the main missions were completed, but she hadn’t really gone far into it. It just sat in the back of her mind, lost with the countless other thoughts she had.
Liz narrowed its eyes at Serena, trying to figure out where this was going. "I mean I would take the chance I suppose. Why do you ask?"
"Well... I have an idea." Serena mused. "But I’m not sure if you’re going to like it or-"
"Stop dragging this and just spit it out." Liz interrupted. "I promise I’ll hear out what you have to say if you’re so worried about it."
"Fine..." Serena sighed. She was quiet for a moment, composing her thoughts before she said, "What if I use that wish to send you back to my world? You can use my body and since time isn’t linear for the Beast God, he can place your soul in my body before I died."
"You just can’t give up can you." Liz jokingly stated.
"That’s not-" Serena started.
"I understand what you’re trying to do.... Honestly, it’s kind of cute how you’re trying to save me from death." Liz said. "I know I’ve accepted my fate, but I guess it’ll be nice to explore another world. It seems quite interesting from what I’ve read." 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Serena wondered for a moment if she should ask Liz what exactly she was reading.
However, Liz continued, "Plus I suppose I can help you fulfill that revenge dream since you helped deal with some of my regrets. Then we’ll be even."
Serena wasn’t sure about even seeing how much Liz had done for her, but she wasn’t going to argue with Liz taking the torch from her so to speak.
