A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 108: Mike is my husband
"You have nothing to be worried about, Mr. Rodney. While your wife is clearly showing signs of temporary amnesia, I believe it is not going to be a long lasting experience. Her memories will be back in no time," the Doctor stated. His gaze was steady and his voice came off with a reassuring tone.
The words did nothing to assure Curtis though. His hands curled into fists, and while he could only hope that the doctor was telling the truth about her memories being only temporarily altered, he was still very very unsettled.
Curtis said nothing to the doctor though. He only nodded at the man. "Thank you, Doctor."
"You’re welcome. Try not to stress her too much, please. She still needs to rest. I’ll be back to carry out another check up in a few hours," he stated before walking out.
As soon as the door closed behind the doctor, Curtis turned to face Lara.
They stared at each other for a long while, and Curtis had to fight against the panic that was threatening to strangle him.
If Lara didn’t remember anything but the fact that Mike was her husband, how the hell was he going to convince her that Mike hadn’t been her husband in a long while?
Hell, how would he explain all the shit that had went down between that man, Tolu, and them?
And even if Curtis started to explain to Lara the events of the past few months, was she going to believe him?
He doubted that.
Still, Curtis knew he had to try. He could not possibly relax, not when she had said the name of that bastard with such softness in her voice.
Curtis ran a hand through his hair as he tried to speak. Before he could come up with a coherent sentence though, Lara beat him to it.
"I don’t know if I should believe you or not. But you clearly don’t look like a man who would lie about being married to me. On the other hand, you also do not look like someone I would get married to. And I am very confused. Because even if I don’t remember anything, I have one memory left. And that memory is me and Mike, deliriously happy on our wedding day," she stated, then paused to take a deep breath.
Her words were like knifes against Curtis’s skin. They twisted deeper than they should have, and the pain was threatening to undo him.
He tried to speak, but Lara went on.
"I would never have left Mike on my own. If there was no tangible reason, like him cheating on me or something, I honestly don’t think anything could have made me leave him. So all of these — you, your words, the pain and sadness in your eyes, it’s all...weird."
Curtis took a deep breath before he responded.
"You are my wife, Lara. You are married to me, happily, even," he stated as firmly as he could.
Confusion marred Lara’s features. "But what about...what about Mike?"
The wave of frustration and anger that slammed into Curtis as she mentioned that name again made him want to punch the wall, but he restricted himself.
With gritted teeth, he forced his next words out.
"Listen to me, Lara. It is true that you used to be married to Mike. But that is in the past now. Mike betrayed you. He cheated on you with your best friend, Tolu. They kicked you out after humiliating you. You are no longer his wife. You’ve not been for months. You are my wife."
The last statement came out a bit forceful, but Curtis didn’t mind. All he wanted was for her to remember him, for her to stop mentioning Mike’s name.
Lara swallowed past a lump in her throat, but before she could say anything else, the door opened.
Kayla stepped in.
And her eyes went wide when she saw that Lara was awake.
"Oh my God. Oh my goodness. You’re okay. You’re awake. Oh my goodness. You have no idea how happy I am," Kayla repeatedly as she rushed over to Lara’s beside, leaning down to hug her.
Lara hugged her back, and when Kayla pulled away, there was a slight smile on Lara’s face.
"I am just going to go with the assumption that you’re a very close friend of mine," she stated.
The smile on Kayla’s face fell away immediately.
"Assume? What...what are you talking about?" she asked.
The expression on Lara’s face made Kayla turn to Curtis with a question on her face.
When she saw how tight his jaw was, Kayla instantly knew that something was wrong.
She took a step back, her heart pounding in her chest. And it was Curtis that eventually spoke.
"She doesn’t remember anything. Anything, except for the fact that she got married to Mike."
The words burned on Curtis’s tongue as he spoke, and his knuckles turned white from fisting his hand so hard.
Kayla’s jaw dropped open as she stared at Lara.
"Sweetheart, you are not married to Mike anymore. That man is a bastard and he almost ruined your life. Curtis is your husband, the love of your life," she said softly.
Lara shook her head.
"That’s kind of hard to believe when I don’t even recall anything. My brain is very very blank. And I...Mike is the only thing there."
Kayla cursed softly. She turned back to Curtis. "What did the doctor say?"
He shrugged, his expression filled with pain. "The amnesia is apparently temporary. Her memories will be back soon."
His words were bland. Cold.
Kayla pinched the bridge of her nose as she looked between Lara and Curtis several times.
The both of them had gone through so much, and Kayla felt pity for them. They deserved their own happy ending after all the shit they had been through together, but the universe seemed to be playing with them.
Again.
She leaned closer to squeeze Lara’s hands.
"It’s going to be fine, sweetie. You’re going to remember as soon as possible, and you’ll see that none of us is lying to you."
Lara had no choice than to nod at her words. Then, all of a sudden, an idea stuck Kayla.
She turned to Curtis. "Did you tell her about the babies?" she asked.
Lara stirred at the words. Curtis shook his head and said no.
"What babies are you talking about?" Lara asked. A small smile tugged on Kayla’s lips.
"I think it’s time for you to meet your kids, Lara."
