Chapter 131: Will you marry me, again?

Kayla opened the door, and sighed when she came face to face with Lara.

Lara immediately held out her hands. "Listen to me, please. Let me talk to you. Just talk. Please don’t shut the door."

There was enough desperation in Lara’s voice that made Kayla stop. She stared at her friend for a long while, her expression thoughtful as she tried to decide if she wanted to listen to Lara’s explanation or not.

Lara wringed her hands together. "Please."

Kayla sighed. "Fine. Come in."

The relief that wove into Lara’s bones as her friend left the door open for her was instantaneous, and she quickly walked in before Kayla could change her mind.

They made their way to the living room, sitting on opposite couches as they held each other’s gaze.

"Out with it, Lara," Kayla quipped. Lara closed her eyes, inhaled, exhaled, and opened her eyes.

Then she spoke.

"I am sorry." Kayla raised her eyebrows at Lara, but she didn’t say anything. Lara went on.

"I am genuinely sorry. I should have trusted you. You are my friend, and you’ve always been so good to me. I had no right to make you as worried as I did. I probably should not have left, and even when I decided to, the least I could have done was talk to you about it. I am sorry, Kayla. Please. Please don’t be mad at me."

Lara’s eyes shone with sincerity as she held her friend’s gaze. Kayla, on the other hand, looked away as she reached out to pinch the bridge of her nose.

"I am not mad at you, Lara. Not anymore. I am just...hurt. Like you said, you should have mentioned something. I wish you had spoken to me before deciding to disappear just like that. I was so worried."

Lara stood up and walked over to take a seat beside Kayla. Very gently, she took her friend’s hands in hers.

Then she squeezed. Softly.

"I am sorry. From the deepest, darkest bottom of my heart, I am sorry."

Kayla gently squeezed her hand back.

"It’s fine."

Lara’s face lit up with hope. "Really? You’re going to forgive me?"

Kayla nodded. Lara’s face bloomed as a wide smile spread across it, and Kayla’s lips tugged with an answering smile.

Lara hugged her friend. "Thank you. Thank you so much, love. Thank you!"

She repeated her appreciation at being forgiven over and over until Kayla asked her to stop.

With no issues between them to hold them back anymore, both women slid into a familiar and comfortable routine. They chatted relentlessly, talking about everything and anything.

When Lara told her best friend that Marcus was gay, the gasp that slipped past Kayla’s lips resounded through the house.

"You’re kidding!" she exclaimed. Lara shook her head, amused at the look of surprise on her friend’s face.

"I am telling you the truth. He is married, even."

Kayla clapped her hands excitedly. "Tell me everything. I have always wanted to have a gay friend. They’re so cool. Give me all the details. I want to know how he met his husband. Did he tell you that?"

Lara laughed at Kayla’s enthusiasm, and they spoke for long hours.

It was a good time, and Lara loved it so much. Sitting there and gisting with Kayla while they ate everything they could lay their hands on made her realise how much she has missed her friend.

When it was time for Lara to go back home, both women were reluctant.

"If I wasn’t going to work tomorrow, I would have asked you to come over again," Kayla pouted.

Lara smiled as she hugged her friend. It was a farewell hug this time.

"It’s fine, love. We have plenty of opportunities now. I’m not going anywhere," she promised. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

They said goodbye to each other, and Lara got into the car where Lazarus was already waiting for her.

By the time Lara got home and walked in through her front door, she was absolutely exhausted.

Curtis was waiting for her in the living room. Lara said nothing as she trudged to the couch and collapsed on it dramatically.

Curtis smiled at her. "Exhausted?" he asked.

Lara waved her hand at him."You have no idea. And I don’t even know why I am tired. All I did was eat and talk with Kayla. Why is my body so weak? I hate it," she grumbled.

Curtis smile grew wider as he stood up. He sat by her side and gently started to rub her back.

"Probably because you were so tense when you left home," he suggested.

She moaned into the couch but said nothing. After several minutes of silence, Lara spoke again.

"The kids are alright?" she asked.

"They are. Sleeping, at the moment."

Lara nodded and relaxed further into the couch, letting her husband coax the muscles of her back into submission.

"We really should get a nanny. Or a caretaker. I don’t want you to be exhausted all the time. And I really need to start sleeping well," she complained.

Curtis agreed to her words. If Lara had been sitting down instead of laying on her back, however, she would have seen that there was a weird expression on Curtis’s face. And she would have known that there was something going on with her husband.

Curtis however, was glad that she wasn’t looking at him. His heart pounded against his chest and his hands trembled slightly.

He had a very important question to ask her, and even though he knew he had nothing to be scared of, he still was hesitant.

But after taking a deep breath, he decided to go for it.

"Lara?" he called out.

"Mm?"

"Will you marry me? Again. Let’s start all

over," he said softly.

She raised shocked eyes to meet his. "Are you kidding me?"

"I am dead serious, Lara. Will you marry me?" he asked again.

"No. I won’t accept this proposal. I am not dressed! And you don’t even have a ring! Ask me in the proper way if you want me to say yes," she huffed.

Curtis laughed at her reaction, his heart filled with warmth for the amazing woman that had stolen his heart without meaning to.

"Whatever you say, my love. As long as you say yes."

Lara rolls her eyes. "Of course I’m going to say yes. Why won’t I?"
