A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 45: Say hello to them
Lara resumed work the next day. She was pretty excited about going back to work, and Curtis was kind of happy to see how excited she was.
Her excitement was infectious, but he didn’t show her how affected he was.
"One of my drivers will be responsible for driving you to work every day. This is not open for negotiation," he said to her in a curt voice when she was ready and good to go.
Lara rolled her eyes.
"You don’t have to go all bossy on me. You’ve told me that like a million times. So yes, your driver will be responsible for taking me to work and bringing me back home. No negotiation there, alright?" she responded, her voice slightly teasing.
Curtis nodded. She looked beautiful, especially considering the fact that she was wearing one of the clothes she finally allowed him to get her.
She would blend right into the company, especially now that he was aware of how brilliant she was.
"You have everything you need?" he asked.
She nodded in the affirmative.
"Good. Benny will be on standby. If you need anything, or you feel like the morning sickness and whatever symptoms you might have is creeping up on you, please do not hesitate to come back home," he ordered.
Lara cocked her head to the side.
"Is that supposed to be allowed in a company?"
Curtis leaned down and held her gaze.
"It is my company, and I call the shots. Come home immediately if you feel even the slightest discomfort. Have I made myself clear?" he quipped.
Lara nodded, already used to his insufferable ways.
"Yeah sure."
She turned and was about to leave when he stopped her. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Wait. I...there’s something else I need to do before you go."
Lara stopped and turned back to face him.
"What is it this time, Curtis?" she asked, and there was a tinge of exasperation in her voice.
"Nothing much. Just...need to say hello to my unborn babies before you leave. They should...you know, get used to me as soon as they can."
His words were delivered in his bland, matter of fact way, but it sounded so ridiculous to Lara that she could not help the laughter that slipped past her lips.
"Really? You’re serious?"
Curtis glared at her.
"Oh wow. You are serious. Okay. Fine! How do you intend on saying hello to the babies?" she asked, genuinely curious to see what he was about to do.
Curtis cleared his throat, feeling slightly abashed. He had done some research, and even though he felt as though everything he read was the cringest and the most ridiculous stuff he had ever come across on the internet, he was still willing to try them out.
So he stepped forward, knelt down before Lara, and placed his head on her slightly protruding belly.
Lara gasped audibly.
She took a step away from him, her jaw hanging open.
"What...what are you doing?" she asked, more gobsmacked than she had ever been.
Curtis looked up at her.
"I’m trying to...you know, give them a chance to sense me from there. It’s supposed to be effective," he stated, and the sheer confidence in his voice made Lara laugh harder.
"Oh my God. Oh my freaking goodness. You saw this online, right? This is so... hilarious," she said between bouts of laughter, and Curtis was beginning to feel a little bit foolish.
He frowned at her, but she was too busy laughing at him to care.
"Stop laughing, Lara. This is not, in any way, a funny situation," he snapped. Lara sensed the anger in his words and stopped laughing.
She wiped away the tears that stemmed from her laughing so hard and stared at him.
"I’m sorry, but you have to admit that it was funny. Really. Even if placing your head on my stomach is supposed to work, I never would have pegged you as someone who would actually go as far as doing it," she explained.
Still on his knees, Curtis leveled her up with a withering stare.
"I will do anything for my babies. I don’t care if it’s ridiculous for you, but this is a bonding period for me. So get over here and let’s get this over with," he quipped.
Lara, who knew that he was serious, muttered under her breath and stepped closer to him.
Curtis held her waist very gently, and placed his head back on her stomach.
He didn’t move for a long while, and with each passing moment, it got harder for Lara to keep her amusement in.
She wondered what Curtis was going to do if either Lazarus or another of his numerous bodyguards walked in and saw him like this.
Or what he was going to do if his mother came right in at this moment and saw him on his knees before her.
"Curtis?" she called after a while. "Yes?"
"I have to get to work," she said.
"There are a lot of other things to do, but that will have to happen later. Have a nice day at work, and don’t forget everything I told you," he said as he stood up.
"Got it, captain," Lara responded. She gave him a slight wave and a salute as she walked out, and Curtis watched her leave.
She had laughed at him for getting on his knees for her. What would she do if she found out about the other things he was planning to do?
Curtis shook his head. The mother of his children was oblivious to his plans, but he didn’t care.
He would do anything for his kids.
Lara, on her way to work, could not help but think about what just happened between her and Curtis.
What happened was so out of character for him, but she could not deny the fact that it had made her heart skip a beat.
He would be a marvelous father to the kids, that she was sure of.
But what about her? Once the babies were born, what use would he have left for her?
She was starting to grow attached to the babies growing in her stomach, and Lara could not help but get worried about what would happen once the babies were born.
The driver parked in the company’s garage, and she heaved a deep breath. She pushed those thoughts out of her head and made her way into the building.
Today was her first day at work, and she was elated to start. Determined not to let anything or anyone ruin her mood, she nodded at her fellow workers as she made her way down to the elevator.
Lara hummed as she got into the empty elevator. But as the door was about to close, someone rushed inside.
And Lara’s smile fell off when she came face to face to the two people she hated more than anything in the entire world.
Mike and Tolu.
Tolu smirked as she saw Lara, and Mike glared at her with a sneer on his face.
"Well, well. Look who we have here. This is going to be so much fun," Tolu smirked.
The elevator doors closed behind them, trapping Lara in there with the both of them.
