A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 97: He understood her words
Laura ran after her father, her heart slamming against her rib cage as she went after him.
"Dad please. Please wait and talk to me. Please," she called out to him.
Adrian whirled around to face his daughter.
"You know who that woman is. You know the stance our family has taken against her. You know that we do not want her for Curtis, and what? You’re going to help her? How dare you, Laura?" he snapped.
His words were delivered with an edge, and anger wafted off him in waves.
Laura sighed and ran a frustrated hand through her hair.
"I know we all decided that we would forever hate her, blah blah blah. But don’t you think we are taking things too far, Dad? Curtis is absolutely, irrevocably in love with that woman! He was willing to walk out of the family because of her. That is how much he loves her, Dad. He loves her enough to pick her over us. Do you want to lose your only son? Why can’t we just be happy for him?"
"Because we have our reputation to think about! That woman doesn’t come from an influential family. She is not a celebrity. Nobody knows her name on the social media. She is a nobody, you hear me? Nobody! And that is not good enough for my son! Your mother and I want the best for him and you know it. So don’t you dare give me bullshit about love. Love does not last. It fades!"
Adrian wasn’t yelling, but his voice was loud enough that Laura had to look around to make sure that no one was listening.
When she was sure that they were still alone, she took a step closer to her father.
"Listen to me, Dad. If Curtis wakes up and finds out that we didn’t let his wife into his ward. If he finds out that Mum kicked Lara out and you did nothing about it, he is not going to be happy. And this time, I don’t think either of you guys are going to like what he will do. You say you don’t want to lose your son, but I think you already did. Because did you remember what he said when the poison incident happened? He wanted nothing to do with either of us.
And this time, I think he is going to cut ties will all of us for real. And if that’s what you want, fine. No problem. I just want you to know that if you lose Curtis forever, you are never getting him back."
Then she took a step back, smiled at her Father, and walked away.
Laura’s heart was slamming violently again her rib cage as she made her way back into her brother’s ward.
Her hands shook slightly, and she had to take deep breaths to calm down.
She had never spoken to her father in that manner before, and a part of her was scared that he was going to walk into the ward and tell his mother everything he heard.
And if Lisa knew that her daughter had gone to Lara to offer her help, all hell was going to be let loose.
Laura took a deep sigh as she got to the ward door. It didn’t matter what happened now. She had pledged her allegiance to Lara, and she was going to stand by her word.
Lisa looked up at the entrance of her daughter.
"Where have you been? You keep moving around and I honestly have no idea what you are looking for," she quipped.
Laura fouhht the urge to roll her eyes at her mother.
"I was outside. I needed the fresh air," she responded curtly.
Before Lisa could fixate on her daughter’s tone change, the door opened again and this time, Adrian was the one who stepped in.
Lisa lit up at the sight of her husband. She stood up and rushed to hug him.
"Oh, darling. You’re here. I was beginning to get worried," she fussed as she held him.
Adrian hugged his wife back. He glanced over Lisa’s shoulders to stare at Laura.
Laura held her father’s gaze, letting him see the determination in her eyes. If he was going to tell his wife what he saw and heard, fine.
Adrian said nothing, and his expression did not betray whatever he was thinking.
He pulled away from the hug and kissed his wife gently.
"What did the doctor say?" he asked.
Lisa told him everything the doctor had said, and he listened attentively.
By the time she was done with her explanation, his brows had furrowed into a frown.
"But he’s going to be fine, right?" he asked.
Lisa nodded.
"Of course. The doctor said all we have to do is wait for him to wake up."
Adrian nodded and then held his wife by her shoulders.
"Listen to me, Lisa. I have to talk to you about something," he started.
Laura’s heart started to pound in her chest. This was it then. Her father was going to tell her mother what he heard.
Disappointment flashed through her at the thought.
She had though that he would choose to be reasonable, but apparently not.
Laura closed her eyes and waited for him to drop the bombshell.
"Let me take you out to eat," Adrian said instead.
Laura’s eyes snapped open. She tried not to gape at his words.
Lisa shook her head at him.
"I don’t want to. What if he wakes up and he wants to see me? I can’t risk it, Adrian," she refused.
Adrian dragged his wife closer to himself.
"Come on, baby. You’ve been sitting here for hours. Let me take you to your favourite restaurant. Eat. Take a deep breath. Our son will be fine, and Laura will stay with him," he said.
Lisa thought about it for a moment before she nodded.
"Okay. Fine." Then she turned to her daughter.
"Don’t let anyone in here, darling. Especially that woman. Is that clear?"
Laura nodded, too excited to use her words to speak.
She understood what her father had just done. He had lured Lisa away, giving Lara the perfect opportunity to come and see her husband.
Laura felt so proud of her father.
She waved as they left, and as soon as the door closed behind them, Laura whipped out her cell phone and texted Lara.
Operation help her sister in law had commenced.
