Abyssal Awakening-Chapter 932: Miki’s Change
A part of Alice wanted to greet Miki but at the same time...
This Miki was very different from the girl she knew. The aura, her gaze, her demeanour, everything had changed.
Gone was the soft spoken yet energetic Miki.
In its place, a cold stern captain was in control.
The woman tried to fight back, she wanted to protest. She couldn’t stay out here when it could be dangerous for her.
She opened her mouth, about to say something when she felt Miki’s glare.
A chill ran down her spine. If she spoke just now...
That would’ve been strike three.
Death.
Even if she didn’t care, even if she wanted to fight to the bitter end, what is there to fight about?
The moment she shows her hostility it’ll become a one sided slaughter.
Gnashing her teeth, she eventually gave up as Miki withdrew her weapon.
"All of you! Listen up!" Miki roared as she stood with her back straight and an unfaltering gaze.
Upon the city walls, several Nightingale family guards lined up.
A clear show of force and power.
Summoning a flag with the Nightingale family crest, Miki slammed it into the ground, causing a mini earthquake as people started to crawl out of their tents.
"We have shown you mercy!" She roared, her voice carrying a deep sense of authority. "We will continue to show you mercy and respect. However!"
She tightened her grip against the flagpole.
"We will not allow Grand Cathia to descend into chaos! We will now allow you to rise above the law because you believe the Nightmare makes you special! Our patience is not permission for your whims!
"Our patience is so that you can be treated as a human! So you will behave with the dignity of one! If you lose yourself to your desires! Lose yourself to the lust known as the Nightmare..."
Veins bulged on her neck as Miki’s anger hit its peak.
"I will personally come and put you down like the beast you intend to act as! I will stain these grounds with your blood and make you an example to the others! An example that awakening new powers does not give you rights to do whatever you want! To whomever you want!
"The Nightingale family will act as both the protectors of this peace and the executioners to those who wish to disturb it!"
Taking a deep breath to calm her emotions, Miki swept her gaze across the crowd.
"And if you believe otherwise, I welcome you to challenge me at any time, any point. Simply remember the fact that there will be no mercy. There will be no begging. There will only be one outcome.
"And that outcome..." She trailed off.
"Will simply be another statistic. An extra tally to the list of casualties. You’ve been warned."
Without saying anything else, Miki dismissed the flag and turned around.
She made eye contact with Alice for a second.
Alice gave her a small wave.
There was a slight hint of surprise in her eyes but she quickly regained her calm as if nothing happened.
Without acknowledging the wave, she made her way back into the city.
"Well would you look at that." Cayla leaned against the carriage while Alice shrugged.
"Not exactly surprising to be fair. We weren’t exactly close and the situation is tense."
While she understood the reason, Alice couldn’t deny the fact that she felt a little saddened by the disregard.
But setting that aside, even as the Nightingale guards stepped down from the walls, calm gradually returned to the camps.
Even if they were impatient, none of them wanted to test out the bottom line of the Nightingale family.
And as things settled down, Elias stood up.
"What’s up?" Alice asked curiously.
They were still waiting for their request to be heard and since it’s Suyin, it should be relatively fast. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"Nothing much. Just going to do my job as a healer." Elias shrugged.
The lady earlier was wounded pretty badly after all.
"I’ll tag along. Might be able to give some assistance as well." Alice dusted herself and followed after Elias.
As they approached the injured woman’s tent, they could hear the sound of groaning from the inside.
Elias gave the tent a light tap.
"Excuse me." He called out.
"What do you want?" She grunted, clearly annoyed as she had just been humiliated earlier but didn’t want to be rude either.
Everyone here was in the same situation, denied access to the city.
"You see I happen to be a doctor. The wounds you sustained are pretty rough to heal. I wanted to know if you have any healing blood or alternatives to treat the wounds. If not, I’d like to offer my services." Elias explained himself as the woman hesitated.
"Come in." She sighed.
Nodding his head, Elias pushed open the tent slightly while Alice followed after.
Within the tent, the woman could be seen in the process of treating her wounds.
Scraps of clothing tightened around the wound haphazardly with some basic medical supplies spread out the floor.
"A little heavy handed, but she missed the vitals. Helping you function normally won’t be an issue." Elias mumbled as his eyes shifted.
He had activated Diagnosis.
"May I?" He smiled.
"If you want payment, I don’t have anything to give you."
"That’s fine. Just think of it as charity. I’m sure that if you’re willing to go this far despite being alone, there’s something you need to do within that city right?" Elias shook his head.
His demeanour was a little surprising for Alice.
Considering his attitude back at the port, she thought he wouldn’t care for situations like this. But instead, he was showing more delicacy than before.
"Do as you wish." The woman surrendered, allowing Elias to peel back the bloodied cloth as she winced from the pain but held back her cry.
Despite the wounds, Miki was actually being merciful.
Had the attack been any higher... it would’ve completely destroyed the shoulder joint, making healing a lot harder and complicated, even with healing blood. Something expensive would be required or a skilled medic.
Elias maintained his smile and activated his Sigils.
"Operation."
A barrier formed, a faint dome appeared around the tent as he sterilised the area, making it safe for surgery. He didn’t want anything dirty getting into the wound after all.
The guards noticed the pulse of Abyssal energy as they were sent put on alert. Alice noticed, prepared to de-escalate the situation if needed.
Thankfully, nothing happened as Elias got to work.
To the woman’s surprise, the operation didn’t hurt as much as she thought it would despite Elias helping her reconnect muscle tissue along with anything else that had been cut apart from the attack.
Alice watched silently from the side.
Elias’s focused expression along with his care when it came to treating the wound.
After a short while, his treatment was done.
Fast and painless.
The woman glanced at her arm in surprise.
No pain in the movement.
In fact, it might even feel better than before. No scarring was left either.
Giving her one last scan, Elias nodded in satisfaction and put away his tools and retracted the barrier.
"There should be no problems and you can move as usual." Elias concluded.
"What if I feel lingering pains?" The woman asked, giving her shoulder a stretch.
"Then some healing blood will do. Even cheap ones but I’m sure you know the risks that come with such choices so I recommend a medic."
Turning around, Elias was about to leave when the woman reached out.
"Thank you... May... I have your name?" She asked.
"I’m no one special. Just a wandering medic. Please take care of yourself. As the lady from the Nightingale family has mentioned, these are tough times." Elias shook his head.
Giving her a wave, he left the tent.
"Look at you being professional. Colour me impressed." Alice smiled.
"I’m always professional when it comes to treatment. It’s just the situation’s we’ve been in have been particularly abnormal." He sighed.
Had it not been for the Nightmare, he wouldn’t have needed to focus on fighting and surviving alone.
If anything, he’d rather spend his time lounging around and experimenting for the cure. Fighting was not on his list of things to do.
"That’s fair. Can’t exactly be normal when everything around you changes." Alice patted him on the shoulder with a soft laugh.
As they made their way back to the carriage, the group waited for a while.
Long enough for Cayla to have a nap.
There was the option to send her back into the mental scape but...
It would cause the guards more concern if Cayla was to suddenly disappear.
Then, one of the Nightingale Guards approached.
"Apologies for the delay, Miss Bai. It is no excuse for someone as great as you but accepting anomalies is rather... risky for us. There are several safety nets we have to put in place in order to ensure public safety." They explained, providing a temporary ID for Cayla.
One that seemed to track her movements as Alice noticed the strands of energy connected to the card.
"It’s fine. Things must be pretty bad if it takes this long even for me." Suyin shrugged.
The guard could only smile helplessly.
He had expected her to be far more difficult than now. Perhaps a bit of screaming paired with some cussing but she was very understanding.
"Yes it is. As for the information you wish to provide, the young miss is waiting inside the city. Please allow me to show you the way." He did a slight bow as Suyin glanced over to Alice before nodding.
"Please."
Following behind the guard, the group entered Grand Cathia at last.
