After Betrayal - I Married a Handsome Tycoon-Chapter 128: A Hero’s Weakness for a Beauty
Moira Sloan’s attitude had shifted so quickly that Finn Fuller just stared at her, momentarily unable to process it.
Seeing him stunned, Moira Sloan beamed. "What’s wrong? Having second thoughts?"
With that, Moira Sloan casually offered the check back to him. "You can’t force a good thing. Here."
If Moira Sloan had insisted on cooperating at that moment, Finn Fuller’s guard would have gone way up.
But her reaction, acting as if she could take or leave the partnership, made Finn Fuller lower his guard instead.
Moira Sloan had always been like that. From the moment he met her, she had always seemed languid and listless, never seeming to care about anything.
But strangely enough, despite this attitude, her professional skills were exceptionally strong.
Back when Kain Alden was still alive, he once said that people like Moira Sloan were blessed with natural talent.
All sorts of thoughts raced through Finn Fuller’s mind. Once he’d convinced himself, he smiled at Moira Sloan and pushed the check back. "Junior Sister, what are you saying? If I didn’t want to work with you, why would I come all the way from Atheria to Everwood County?"
Moira Sloan chuckled lightly. "What if you were just bored and had nothing better to do?"
Finn Fuller didn’t get angry at the jab. He leaned against the cash register, getting closer to Moira Sloan, and asked with a frown, "What did you mean just now about someone murdering Master? Didn’t he die from an allergic reaction?"
Moira Sloan replied, "Just messing with you."
Finn Fuller wasn’t an idiot; he could tell whether Moira Sloan was just messing with him or actually testing him.
But since Moira Sloan didn’t want to talk, he didn’t press the issue.
’I can’t let this hard-won partnership fall apart over such a small matter.’ 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Finn Fuller smiled, changing the subject back to the partnership. "Junior Sister, I guarantee you’ll make a fortune from this deal."
Moira Sloan glanced up at him. "It had better be just as you say."
Finn Fuller replied, "When have I ever lied to you?"
A half-smile played on Moira Sloan’s lips, but she didn’t respond.
A few minutes later, Finn Fuller emerged from Moira Sloan’s shop. He glanced over at the tattoo parlor next door, then quickened his pace and ducked into his car.
Once inside the car, he reached up, loosened the tie around his neck, and let out a long sigh of relief.
"Drive."
The driver replied, "Yes, Director Fuller."
Once the car had driven some distance, Finn Fuller took out his phone and made a call.
When the call connected, Finn Fuller spoke in a low voice, "It’s settled."
The person on the other end of the line sounded incredulous. "Moira Sloan agreed?"
Finn Fuller sneered. "Who’s going to say no to money?"
"Are you sure she’s genuinely cooperating and not just trying to cause trouble?" the voice on the other end asked.
Finn Fuller said with complete confidence, "She won’t. I’m telling you, you don’t know my junior sister. She might have seemed close to my master, but she’s the type who stays out of everything—languid and unreliable from morning till night."
The voice on the other end was skeptical. "You’d better be sure."
Finn Fuller replied, "Even if she has other plans, what are you afraid of with me here? As long as I’m around, she can’t make any waves."
The other person countered, "Judging by how she handled Rachel Yates, she doesn’t seem like the simple pretty face you’re describing."
Finn Fuller retorted, "That’s because Rachel Yates is an idiot, not because she’s so clever."
Done with the conversation, Finn Fuller had no desire to hear the other person throw more cold water on his enthusiasm. A look of impatience crossed his face as he changed the subject. "By the way, I don’t think Connor Quinn has told Moira Sloan his real identity."
The voice on the phone asked, "Hm?"
Finn Fuller said, "If Moira Sloan knew that Connor Quinn was our Senior Brother, she would have said something. There’s no way she wouldn’t have. But judging from her reaction just now, it’s obvious she has no idea about the real identity of the man running the tattoo shop next door."
Hearing what Finn Fuller said, the person on the other end went silent for a moment.
After about thirty seconds, they spoke again. "Moira Sloan doesn’t know Connor Quinn’s real identity, yet our people watching them report that the two have been inseparable lately..."
The person trailed off, as if realizing something, then scoffed. "Now this is interesting."
Finn Fuller still hadn’t caught on. "What is it?"
The voice on the other end was filled with amusement. "Didn’t you say before that Connor Quinn disappeared right after Moira Sloan became Kain Alden’s disciple?"
Finn Fuller picked up the thread. "Yes. Kain Alden said Connor Quinn was in seclusion, and after that, Kain Alden kept sending him out to all sorts of competitions..."
"It’s a tale as old as time," the other person mused. "Even a hero is no match for a beautiful woman."
It slowly dawned on Finn Fuller what they meant. "You’re saying..."
Finn Fuller trailed off, then burst out laughing. "So that’s how it is! HA HA HA! Connor Quinn is only human after all..."
Meanwhile, after Finn Fuller left, Moira Sloan casually tossed the massive check onto the cash register. She tapped it lightly with her fingertip, a cold smile touching her lips.
’Idiot.’
’He hasn’t improved at all after all these years.’
Just as she finished cursing him in her head, she suddenly felt a pang of hunger.
She immediately picked up her phone, opened her messenger app, and sent a message to Connor Quinn: Busy?
Connor Quinn replied instantly: What’s up?
Moira: Hungry.
