Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Retreating to Advance

Moira Sloan thought she had made herself perfectly clear to Connor Quinn last night.

So seeing him show up here today, she couldn’t help but suspect he was being desperately clingy.

How pathetic.

Moira Sloan hated these kinds of ambiguous relationships that were doomed from the start. Just as she was about to say something to put a definitive end to any ideas he might have, she saw his gaze brush past her and land on a young girl not far away. With a stern face, he said, "Go home."

At his sharp tone, the girl’s face instantly flushed red.

The girl then put down what she was holding, hunched her shoulders, and timidly shuffled away.

Seeing this, Moira Sloan crossed her arms, a single eyebrow arching.

’Oh, so he wasn’t here for me.’

’That makes sense. After everything I said last night, how could he possibly show his face here again?’

The next second, Connor Quinn gave Moira Sloan a curt nod, his expression still stern. It was a silent greeting before he strode off as well.

As soon as the two of them left, Shauna Duane hurried over. Her eyes practically followed Connor Quinn out the door as she asked Moira, "Who was that girl?"

Moira Sloan’s lips curled into a faint smile. "You’re asking me?"

Shauna Duane asked, "He has other women besides you?"

Moira Sloan replied, "A man like him only looks respectable. What do you think?"

Shauna Duane’s cheeks puffed out with indignation.

But on second thought, she decided Moira Sloan was still the bigger threat. Looking at her, she said, "I don’t care about the others. I’m only watching you."

Moira Sloan chuckled, unconcerned. "Alright, Shauna."

Shauna Duane was speechless.

「Meanwhile」

After Connor Quinn dragged Jade Quinn out, he hailed a taxi to send her home.

Jade Quinn was shoved into the car. She leaned against the window, gazing at him with pleading eyes. "Brother."

"Don’t ever come here again," Connor Quinn said coldly.

Jade Quinn’s eyes filled with hope. "Will that pretty lady be my sister-in-law?"

Connor Quinn didn’t look at her. He pulled some cash from his pocket, peeled off a bill, and handed it to the driver. "Driver, go."

The driver took the money and stepped on the gas.

Once the car was far down the road, Connor Quinn pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, stuck one between his lips, and lit it. Out of the corner of his eye, his gaze drifted to Moira Sloan’s small shop.

’Will she be?’

’Who knows?’

Back with Moira Sloan, the morning’s little episode hadn’t soured her mood.

After breakfast, she settled into a rocking chair near the French windows, half-reclining as she flipped through a book.

She looked languid and leisurely, a picture of indescribable beauty.

She had just turned to the third page when the phone she’d placed beside her hand began to vibrate.

Moira Sloan lowered her gaze. A message had popped up on the screen: Shane Jennings went to see you yesterday?

Seeing the message, Moira Sloan’s eyebrow twitched.

’Their social circle really hadn’t changed at all,’ she thought. ’You couldn’t keep the smallest thing a secret.’

Before Moira Sloan could pick up her phone to reply, a second message appeared: His fiancée really put him in his place last night. Tsk tsk, just what you’d expect from a wealthy heiress. What an aura.

Moira Sloan’s interest was piqued. Never one to shy away from some drama, she picked up her phone and sent back a single question mark: ?

The reply came: She kicked Shane Jennings right off a joint project.

Moira Sloan: Heh.

Her friend: You’re really not coming back?

Moira Sloan: Nope.

After Moira sent her reply, there was a long pause. Then, a string of rather... eloquent expletives appeared: FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!

Moira Sloan: You have that function?

Her friend: Shane Jennings’s wedding was moved up. It’s the day after tomorrow!!

With that, her friend sent a screenshot of Shane Jennings’s social media post.

[My wedding ceremony will be held on July 6th at the Horizon Hotel. Your presence is cordially invited.]

The accompanying image was a wedding photo.

Moira Sloan glanced at it but didn’t zoom in. The corner of her mouth lifted in a faint sneer.

After their chat, Moira Sloan appeared to be her usual self, but she was actually even more listless than before. She skipped lunch entirely, grabbed her small purse, and took a taxi home.

Distracted, Moira Sloan didn’t notice the tall man in the window of the building next door. He was sitting on a high stool with one foot planted firmly on the ground, his other leg slightly bent, his profound gaze fixed on her retreating back.

The man was holding a phone. On the screen was a message that had been read but not answered: Senior, that Shane Jennings guy is getting married the day after tomorrow.
