After Betrayal - I Married a Handsome Tycoon-Chapter 147: Leave Each Other Some Dignity
They say love that comes too late is cheaper than dirt.
But no one ever says that it’s human nature to be so shameless.
Moira Sloan was direct, holding nothing back and beating around no bushes.
Upon hearing her words, Shane Jennings’s jaw tightened. It was the unmistakable reaction of a powerful man who had just lost face.
Seeing this, Moira Sloan scoffed. "Find that embarrassing?"
Shane Jennings said nothing.
Moira continued, "If you know what embarrassment feels like, then don’t do things like this. The baseline for being a person is having self-respect and self-love. You debase yourself first, and then get humiliated by others. You can’t blame anyone else for that."
Before anyone even raises a hand, you’re already rubbing your face in their palm.
They slap you, and you call that bullying?
Is that really bullying?
Isn’t that just you begging for a beating?
This harsh, severe Moira Sloan was a stranger to Shane Jennings. She was never like this before. In the past, though she could be headstrong, she was fundamentally kind and soft-hearted. Even when they gave each other the silent treatment, she had never spoken a single harsh word to him.
Thinking of this, Shane Jennings frowned, a flicker of pain in his eyes. "Do you have to speak to me like this?"
Moira Sloan suddenly smiled. "What, you want it some other way? I also hoped that after we broke up, we could go our separate ways, maybe be nodding acquaintances if we ran into each other. But haven’t you been the one stirring up trouble again and again?"
Every word from Moira was harsh. Shane Jennings, a man who could normally keep his composure if a mountain crumbled before him, had a visibly sour expression on his face.
After a long moment, he walked toward her, took a deep breath, his eyes filled with forbearance. "Yes, I admit it. I arranged this whole thing. But I did it for your own good. I know you’re talented, and I didn’t want to see you bury that talent in some small town."
Moira sneered, "So by your logic, I should be thanking you?"
Shane Jennings said, "Moira, I..."
Moira gave a hollow laugh. "If you wanted to help me so badly, why didn’t you help me back when Rachel Yates framed me and I had to leave Atheria?"
Shane Jennings stammered, "Back then..."
Before he could make an excuse, Moira cut him off and continued, "Back then, you needed to secure an arranged marriage, so you were terrified of being associated with me, right?"
They had been in love for seven years. Shane Jennings knew Moira Sloan had a sharp tongue, but he never knew it could be this sharp.
For a split second, he suddenly felt that the woman standing before him was a stranger.
Moira lifted her gaze to look at him. Growing up with Jean Hale at her uncle’s house had taught her how to read people like a book. Sensing his thoughts, she scoffed, "Let me guess. President Jennings, who couldn’t help me back then, is suddenly able to stand up for me now. It’s probably because you’ve realized Cassie Blanchett is in love with you, isn’t it?"
As Moira’s words fell, Shane Jennings’s pupils contracted sharply.
Seeing his reaction, Moira laughed coldly. "Shameless."
Having said all that needed to be said, Moira started back toward the private room, brushing past Shane Jennings.
Shane Jennings’s breath hitched. As Moira walked past him, he grabbed her wrist and said in a hoarse voice, "Moira, is there really no chance for us anymore?"
Moira sneered. "What kind of chance? The kind where I become your mistress?"
Shane Jennings said in a low voice, "I can get a divorce. Just give me some time, I..."
Moira cut him off. "Shane Jennings, you’ve slept with Cassie Blanchett, haven’t you?"
Shane Jennings froze, stunned.
Moira smiled. "Don’t get me wrong. You two are a lawfully wedded couple now, so it’s perfectly normal for you to sleep together. I’m not being jealous. I’m just curious. Your body belongs to Cassie Blanchett, and you had an emotional affair with Rachel Yates. Tell me, what exactly do you have left to spend the rest of your life with me?"
Moira’s words were like sharp jewels. Shane Jennings’s hand, gripping her wrist, tightened.
Moira continued, "Surely you’re not planning to spend the rest of your life with me using that worthless, shattered love of yours?"
Shane Jennings lowered his eyes, the words caught in his throat like a fishbone. "Moira..."
Moira said mockingly, "Shane Jennings, we’re both civilized people. Let’s leave each other with a shred of dignity."
Shane Jennings was left speechless.
As Moira tried to pull her wrist from Shane Jennings’s grasp, he instinctively tried to tighten his grip.
Moira glanced up at him, her once gentle eyes now filled with nothing but ice.
Stung by her gaze, Shane Jennings flinched and abruptly let go.
Moira shot him a glance, sneered, and walked away.
Moira walked back to the private room in her high heels. Just as she reached the door, she came face to face with a man. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
He had clearly been standing there for quite some time.
Seeing her, the man’s eyes filled with an amused smile. "Miss Sloan."
Finn Fuller had just introduced him, but Moira Sloan hadn’t been paying attention at all.
’What was his name again?’
Seeing Moira just smile without speaking, Miles Murray understood and thoughtfully introduced himself. "The name’s Murray. Miles Murray."
Moira’s eyes curved into a smile, showing no embarrassment at being caught not remembering his name. "A pleasure, President Murray."
After the greeting, Moira returned to the private room.
Watching her go inside, Miles Murray raised his phone, which was in an active call, and said to Connor Quinn on the other end, "Quinn, this woman of yours, tsk, she’s not to be trifled with..."
