Chapter 97: Chapter 97: This Man is Full of Secrets

To be honest, Moira Sloan could handle Rachel Yates on her own easily. The problem was that Shane Jennings had her back.

It wasn’t that Moira couldn’t handle Shane.

He was filled with guilt toward her right now. With a few simple tricks, she could play him like a dog.

She just didn’t want to get involved with him again.

Since the "prestigious dog" already had an owner, she figured if she was going to beat the dog, she should probably contact its master first.

Moira sent the text. About thirty seconds later, Cassie Blanchett called her directly.

Moira raised an eyebrow, her fingertip swiping across the screen to answer.

As soon as the call connected, Cassie got straight to the point. "What do you need me to do?"

Moira smiled faintly. "Keep Shane Jennings on a leash."

Cassie inhaled sharply on the other end of the line. "You’re making this more complicated than it needs to be. Between you and Rachel Yates, he’d definitely help you."

Moira replied, "Have you ever considered that no matter who he helps, it’s a slap in your face?"

Cassie was silent.

In their circle, it wasn’t uncommon for a man to have a wife at home while keeping a mistress—or several—on the side.

The wives in most of these marriages simply turned a blind eye.

But Cassie Blanchett was different. She was in love with Shane Jennings.

Love leads to caring, and caring leads to possessiveness.

After Moira spoke, Cassie was silent for a moment before speaking again, her voice subdued. "How are you planning to deal with Rachel Yates?"

Since they were discussing a partnership, trust was key. Moira was forthcoming. "At her competition, the day after tomorrow."

Cassie replied, "Don’t worry. Shane won’t be there that day."

Moira said, "President Blanchett, it’s a pleasure working with you."

After hanging up with Cassie, Moira rested her phone against her chin, lost in thought for a moment.

’It’s true what they say,’ she thought. ’You can overcome any obstacle in life, but love is always the hardest trial of all.’

Cassie Blanchett was such a perceptive person, yet in the end, she too was brought down by love.

After lunch, Moira gave Shauna Duane some instructions, then took a cab home to quickly pack a suitcase before heading to the airport for her flight to Atheria.

Right before takeoff, she thought for a moment and decided to call Jean Hale.

The phone rang for a while before it was picked up, but the voice that answered wasn’t Jean Hale’s. It was Connor Quinn.

"Grandma’s in the restroom."

Moira pressed her tongue against her teeth. "Oh."

Connor’s voice was low and deep. "Is something wrong?"

Moira rolled her eyes. ’How could this damn man be so calm?’ she wondered. "Could you let ’my’ grandmother know that I have to go to Atheria for a bit? I’ll be back in about three or four days."

Moira put special emphasis on the word "my."

Connor asked, "When are you leaving?"

Moira replied, "Right now."

Connor asked, "You’re at the airport now?"

Moira answered honestly, "I am."

Then, in a calm tone that mimicked his own composure, Moira added, upholding the time-honored tradition of good neighbors helping one another, "By the way, I’ll have to trouble you to help look after my grandma for the next few days. I’ll bring you back a souvenir from Atheria when I return."

’It’s only proper to return the favor,’ she thought. ’I won’t be indebted to him in the slightest.’

Connor said, "Got it."

After hanging up with Connor, Moira switched her phone to airplane mode.

She set down her phone, her fingertips tapping on its case.

A thought occurred to her, and the corners of Moira’s eyes lifted slightly.

’Connor Quinn really is a hard person to figure out.’

’He never lets his emotions show. He’s completely unreadable.’

’I can’t shake the feeling that the man is shrouded in mystery.’

’But in all their time together, I haven’t found a single unusual clue about him.’

The flight from takeoff to landing in Atheria took about two and a half hours in total.

Moira put on an eye mask and slept for the entire flight.

Once they landed, she touched up her makeup, grabbed her suitcase, and left the airport.

She’d booked the same hotel as before. After taking a cab there, she dropped her suitcase, but didn’t bother to rest. Instead, she leaned against the wall, pulled out her phone, and opened a group chat that had been dead for what felt like a century, ironically named ’One Big Happy Family,’ and sent a message.

[Need a favor?]

After she sent the message, the group chat was met with dead silence.

A smirk played on Moira’s lips. Her fingers tapped lightly on the screen as she went to the Red Packet function, set the quantity to 3, and then entered a total amount of 0.03.

Don’t ask why she didn’t enter 0.01 for the amount—there was a rule that each individual packet had to be at least 0.01.

The moment the Red Packet was sent, two were instantly claimed.

A second later, the two suckers who had grabbed the packets started wailing in the chat.

[Junior Sister, are you kidding us?]

[A man like me, whose pride is etched into his very bones, who would still be a pile of proud ashes even if cremated, a man as majestic as an eagle... to think I would one day stoop so low for a single cent?!]

Moira’s lips curled. With unruffled composure, she opened the Red Packet and collected the last remaining cent, then sent a new message: "You took my money, so now you have to solve my problems. I need my dear Third and Fourth Senior Brothers to do me a favor. The day after tomorrow, I need to have a recording played publicly at Rachel Yates’s competition."

[You call one cent ’money’??]

[You get what you pay for, Junior Sister. Think about it. Take Third Senior Brother’s advice and send a much bigger packet.]

Seeing the messages from Rowan Churchill and Caleb Lockwood, Moira grinned, about to type a comeback. But just then, the profile picture of a member who hadn’t spoken in ages appeared in the chat.

[Leave it to me.]

Moira blinked. [First Senior Brother?]
